Appearance
Gwen’s eyes are striking- not because of their ice-blue color, but because of the intensity of her gaze. It is easy to tell when her brain is pondering the nuances of a situation, although her analysis often remains a mystery. Expressive eyebrows, high cheekbones, and a firm jawline frame a straight nose and full, pink lips. Her beauty is almost too severe when she is serious, but her smile can shatter the serious image into a million goofy pieces. Her hair is the color of grain reflecting the sun, floating straight around her face and curling at the tips near the middle of her slender neck. Wide but thin shoulders enhance the look of her tiny waist that is further accented by hips slightly wider than her shoulders. Her legs and arms are thin, her body is petite.

NPC History
Originally from Ista Hold, Gwendolyn’s birth was one of tragedy with the passing of her mother Meralyn. Her father, Garwen, was lost only two years later in a storm at sea. Gwen had no memories of her parents, but enjoyed very good ones of her grandfather, Wilfryn. Since he was a busy guard captain, she of course spent much of her time with the nannies, but he always made time for her: dinner-time stories, tickle-fights and building sandweyrs on the beach.
Gwendolyn was only five turns old when her grandfather brought her over with the Oldtimers to escape the destruction of the Great Comet. It was traumatic leaving behind the beautiful island she called home for the sand-riddled deserts of Igen Weyr. The tense atmosphere between the conservative Newtimers and liberal Oldtimers was quite stressful to a sensitive child like her, and the bustling overpopulation didn’t help her shyness, either.
Gwen was only too happy to leave the sands of Igen when Southern Weyr was discovered four turns later. Her grandfather packed them up and headed for the Southern Continent. Although her grandfather tried to protect her from the grisly discoveries in Southern Weyr, Gwen did witness a gruesome scene as one of the men dropped his end of a skeleton being carried out. It rolled off to the ground and turned its dark, gaping eye sockets toward Gwen, eliciting a scream from the nine-turn-old.
A turn later, Gwen happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time as one of the younger dragonriders was being carried to the infirmary, screaming and writhing in pain from his first experience with Thread. And to add to these frightening memories, Gwen had a masochistic interest in the stories of ghosts, pirates and murderers that monopolized the gossip over the next six turns. The result is one anxious young girl that’s scared of just about everything— and its shadow.
After a comedic attempt at training to be a guard like her grandfather, Gwen found herself to be most useful among the nannies. Who better to watch your child than someone too scared to take them anywhere unsafe or let them out of her sight for even a moment? However, nearing her seventeenth turn, Gwen found herself longing for more than just watching over weyrbrats. So in exchange for romantic advice and promotion to her single friends, a Harper Senior Apprentice named Meryk agreed to secretly help Gwen learn to read. It wouldn’t be enough to satiate her boredom forever, but it was a start.
PC History
Four months after her seventeenth turn, Gwen attended a Gather and had the luck of purchasing very cheap but finely-made craft items from two ex-Sr. Apprentices: one, Kerrance, a Miner; the other, Thanson, a Woodcrafter. After a few dances and laughs (and far too many drinks), Gwen learned the reason behind their abandonment of craft membership. It turns out that the two were lovers, and they simply did not want to wait on promotion in order to be together. They had recently joined Southern Hold, making a meager living by setting up stalls at Gathers and selling their wares for cheaper than official craft prices.
Partly because she was dissatisfied as a nanny, and partly because she was touched by the men's uninhibited pursuit of happiness (but need for more customers), Gwen came up with an idea. What if she could act as a go-between finding them customers? And one step further, what if she could use her creative eye to coordinate these well-made but cheap items into a beautifully harmonized look, like a decoration service?
Gwen nursed a horrible hangover the next day- but the next, next day, Gwen began to work. Over the next six months, she organized a network of people willing to sell their well-made (if not official) craft items for cheap prices. She became a Southern Weyr Trader and offered two services: she could either find specific items by request or she could completely makeover a living space.
With her ability to read and her decent success as a trader, Gwen began to develop much more confidence. Did it mean that scared child was gone? Not at all. Beneath the surface, waiting to erupt, was the same fear-riddled woman. Gwen just had the perfect mask of poise down and knew where to go to avoid situations that might cause her anxiety.
