Description

The rugged features of this man boarders on the line between average and handsome. Short cropped black hair is just starting to silver at the temples though the stubble on his upper lip, chin and along the jawline shows more silver than black. Piercing blue eyes peer out at the world from beneath heavy lids as if he were analyzing everything going on around him. His straight nose is just shy of being beakish and shows signs of having been broken sometime in the past. His physique is neither bulky with muscles nor rake thin but comfortably in between with well muscled limbs of the whipcord variety. Shoulders are broader than hips but not by much and tapers slightly to his waist before leading into long legs. An odd combination of ruggedness and elegance are evident in his confident stride and carriage.

He alternates between black and brown clothing though they are usually the same style and cut since he has had to piece together whole garments with his limited expertise. Both tunic and trousers are basic with a keyhole neck and barely rolled hems stitched with oddly small but widely spaced stitches that shows both care and inexperience with sewing. His boots are better than his clothes and are the only items he purchases though his previous pair will be worn out completely before he replaces them.

History

Raised on the border between Bitra and Benden, Hunzak never knew exactly which Lord Holder his father was beholden to but he did know that their holding looked to Benden Weyr for protection from threats to their existence. His core family was fairly small; father - Hundazar, mother - Kylaria, him, and 2 younger sisters - Daria & Narika. They attended Gathers at both Bitra and Benden and were fortunate enough to make it to Benden Weyr a few times during his life. Things were good until his mid to upper teen Turns when the small holding he helped his father work with the help of the cousins and uncles that lived on the holding with them became rather confining to the youth. He began being a bit rebellious, nothing serious really as he became hungry for knowledge of the wider world.

When he was 18 he went to Bitra Hold and was accepted as a guard recruit since that would give him a little opportunity to travel if he were chosen to escort the Lord Holder anywhere. Unfortunately, being young and confident in himself, he was drawn into many of the games of chance that seem to proliferate throughout Bitra's holdings and his fellow guardsmen were not forgiving at all when he would end up owing various of them until the next payday. Many times his temper got the better of him and he was reprimanded for fighting but it was always fisticuffs, the young man having enough self control to refrain from drawing his belt knife during a fight.

One day after he'd Turned 20 he'd gotten into a game in a tavern within the Hold with some other guardsmen and denizens of the Hold on his restday. Unfortunately for him, he got drunk … not just tipsy drunk but rip-roaring drunk. It's quite possible that someone slipped something into one of his drinks to help him to that state. The game was going well, he was winning just enough to keep him in the game but then his luck turned and he started winning hand after hand until the markers and marks started piling up in front of him as he wiped player after player out. Finally, another player was fed up after losing half a dozen hands in a row and accused Hunzak of cheating. A fight ensued that ended up tearing up the tavern and spilling out into the street and adjacent courtyard. Fists flew on both sides of the fight, when either of them looked to be getting pushed out of the ring of spectators (and bettors) they were pushed back into the center of the cleared space. The heat of the moment, the jeering of the crowd and his opponent's refusal to back down egged Hunzak on as his temper snapped and he pummeled the man furiously when they came together.

His accuser felt himself losing this battle and decided to give himself an advantage (according to his side of the story) and drew his belt knife. During one of his staggers into the crowd and subsequent shove back into the fight, he lost his knife. Somehow that knife ended up in Hunzak's hand and the fight ended with the young man's opponent curled around a gut wound and writhing on the ground. Dozens of witnesses saw the whole fight but there were so many stories that it was difficult to figure out what exactly happened after Hunzak was detained and tossed into the brig.

Stripped of his guardsman rank, he was tried and convicted of assault and battery with grievous injury. Just after his 21st Turnday he was sentenced to 10 Turns hard labor. Despite protests from other guards and several residents of the Hold who liked the man he'd injured, the 10 Turns sentence was upheld because the one consistent thread to the investigation indicated that the injured man had started the fight. It helped a great deal that the man hadn't died or his sentence would have been much longer if he'd managed to avoid exile.

Hunzak spent his sentenced time doing his best to keep himself out of trouble though trouble seemed to find him just as he was starting to feel like he might make it out alive. He didn't have anything to keep track of his time in chains but he was pretty sure by watching the seasons change that his 10 Turns was done but still he was kept in chains.

One day he was called to the overseer's office. Thinking that he was finally getting released, he reacted with anger and frustration when he was told he, along with a few others, were being transferred to yet another mine to continue his sentence. The overseer wasn't interested in hearing his protests that he'd already served his 10 Turn sentence and the guards had to haul him bodily from the room and throw him back into his cell. He spent a sevenday in isolation until he was finally allowed to take up his small bag of 'personal items' and made to board a ship for that transfer.
