Description

You see before you a young man in his mid-twenties of age with short, dark red hair and green eyes the color of weathered copper. The young man is thin in stature - one might have thought him frail at one time but he's grown lithe and well-muscled like one of the feral jungle cats. His complexion betrays him to be someone who is now out of doors quite often; his face and arms bronzed from long days under the sun. Long, slender fingers of his hands would seem to suggest trades of Healer or Harper would have made a good fit for the lad at one time.

He is wearing the clothes of one who is weyr-born. Surely the good quality of the fabric of his split-sided, tunic would suggest that he is no country rube just off the turnip wagon. The tunic and jerkin are a mixture of various colors of greens ranging from the swath of deep, sea green across his shoulders to the lighter, summer-grass green of his under tunic visible around his wrists and at the lower hem of his side-split, leather jerkin. His pants, fashioned from a sturdy, dark-blue cloth, become visible as he walks through the large slit that extends up from the lower hem of his robes to a about his crotch. The robes have been slit, one would presume, to allow him to mount a horse successfully without having the tabbard-like panel of his tunic and jerkin ride up and expose his bare legs. A pair of dark brown boots keep his feet warm and dry and conceal the cuffs of his pants. Slung from one shoulder is a worn leather satchel that's a common piece of gear for most riders.

Personality

N'vik, after years of being the brunt of people's jokes and jibes, has never lost his sense of hope and determination. Every time he fell down or accidentally broke something (and it happened a lot), he -always- managed to get back on his feet and carry on. Even before he was found by Nivanth those years ago, he never lost his good spirits. Some thought him a bit soft in the head because when things looked their worst - when storm clouds were on the horizon, he seemed perfectly able to move forward and do what he was needed to do. This quality has only grown within him as he's matured as a dragon rider. Though he's not the most outgoing of Dragonmen on Pern, he's not shy either. He just prefers small groups to large crowds. Where some might want a huge audience, a throng of people in the Living Cavern, he'd rather retire to his weyr with his wing mates or friends and enjoy their own company.

Information

After being assigned to one of the wings at High Reaches Weyr for the past several years, Nevik has returned to Southern Weyr and has been assigned to the Lynx Wing as a wingrider. While up in the north, N'vik and Nivanth quickly made a name for themselves as one of the 'go-getters' among the other new riders, always pushing themselves to keep in the fight for longer than most would expect. It seemed as though the two believed that they were guarding the others of their wing and their flight and would not back down from their duty.

N'vik and Nivanth weren't, as some claimed back then, arrogant with their flying and fighting abilities, they were adamant. N'vik has inherited some of Nivanth's quiet reserve since they were bound together which has resulted in a total lack of boasting or bravado from either. Where as another rider would be telling the tales of their fighting prowess over many a tankard of ale, they just smile and shrug and are happy that the job is done. Though they may not throw themselves in the middle of the party, they were the star-speckled shield who would put themselves between their wingmates and harm every time. They have charged, head-long into thread to protect someone's back, narrowly escaping thread-score (most of the time) that would have ripped through a dragon and its rider.

Rumors

Anything listed here is free for people to play with for rp.

You can come to learn these rumors however your character would have learned of them.

If you want to alter the rumor go for it…it -is- a rumor after all and things are going to get stretched.

At one point in his first year of training up at High Reaches, a green took a hit and one of its wing sails was horribly damaged. The pair were falling out of the sky like someone shot an arrow at the ground but the thread was so thick that no one dared dive for them. This was where N'vik and Nivanth's boldness became quite clear to the leaders. The blue streaked down through the air, twisting and rolling through the thread as though he were dancing through a crowd. At the last moment, Nivanth grabbed the green and her rider and pulled out of the dive to deliver them safely to the ground.

Afterwards, N'vik and Nivanth were reprimanded for failing to obey the wingleader's command to let the wingmate fall as it would endanger other dragons and riders to make such a foolhardy attempt. N'vik took the tearing out in silence but was certain that what he did was the 'right' thing. Where as some saw their brazen stubbornness as a form of disrespect for their leaders, some saw it as a tenacity that should be utilized rather than punished. Before he could be dismissed from the wing, another Wingleader who had seen such a bold and selfless display of loyalty snatched him up.

History

nevik-parents-01.png

Nevik is weyrborn. His true parents, whoever they were, gave him up to the Weyr to raise because their duties were too great to take care of a child full-time. Raised by foster-parents as many other Weyrbrats were raised, he constantly refers to his 'Old Nan' as a primary custodian. His parents seemed to have a stronger connection to his foster-brother, Adzo. Adzo, who was the natural-born son of his foster-parents, was not clumsy. He was not accident-prone. He was, essentially, everything that Nevik wasn't. The two siblings didn't really have many arguments growing up but it was possibly the lack of connection that affected Nevik the most. His older brother didn't routinely argue with him because he didn't seem to care about him.

His weyr-mother was a Healer, and his weyr-father was a crafter of some unknown variety. Based on how he refers to them there wasn't much of a bond created between the two and he probably got more parentage out of the woman he knows as 'Old Nan'.

Rumors back at Fort Weyr, where he was born, suggested that one or both of his parents may have been a rider though nothing has ever been proven. Though his penchant for accidents and clumsiness has driven his opinion of himself, on occasion, as low as a tunnel snake nest, he holds onto the idea that one day he might discover who his birth parents are. It's not that big of an issue as many weyrbrats discover that their foster parents weren't, necessarily, their birth parents.

RP Hooks

N'vik has always expressed an interest in the Old Times. If he finds out that you're an Oldtimer, he'll do his best -not- to talk your ear off about how things were like 'back in the day'. He loves reading some of the old scrolls in the archives (those that he's allowed to read) about early Pern.

Skills

Sling.jpg

In his youth, Nevik was given a cord-braided sling by his 'Old Dah' back at Fort Weyr. The old man said that he should practice with it to learn courage and patience. The idea is that Nevik would have to develop patience to try and use the thing even though his natural clumsiness would probably make it difficult if not down-right dangerous for him to be flipping stones around. In addition, he would need to learn courage to be able to let go of the knot and 'fire' the sling rather than continue to endlessly spin it above his head. The idea is that Nevik doesn't have the courage to take that step and let the stone fly from the sling. Sometimes it hits the mark and sometimes it misses.

He's had a few occasions to practice with it - at the beach and the pools. He's never had a reason to actually use it and he's not quite sure if he would be able to calm himself down to actually aim with it should he ever need to. For now it's simply something that he carries with him should he have any free time. He can always find a few small stones and aim for some imagined target in the distance. Right now he's just working on being able to get the stone to go in the vague direction of where he's aiming - let alone hit an actual target.

Over the years, he has become fairly adept at the weapon, though it's mostly just something to do on the beach while his Blue, Nivanth is happily swimming in the deep water.

Relationships

Jesha:

  • She was one of the first people that Nevik met after he transferred to Southern Weyr. She's also one of his first patients. The older, more seasoned rider, reminds him of someone he knew back at Fort Weyr though he'd never vocalize the comparison. He enjoys her company though so far it's been because she was in pain.
  • "Thowwy Rither…": Jesha is the first victim in Southern Weyr to suffer from Nevik's terrible bad luck and clumsiness. He 'accidentally' dropped a huge dollop of numbweed salve down her backside and while trying to clean it up, he stuck a salve-coated cloth into his mouth to free his hands; numbing his tongue and preventing him from speaking clearly for quite a while.

Z'bor:

  • "Thowwy Rither…": While working in the Dragon Infirmary, he was trying to help Z'bor treat his dragon and 'accidentally' tripped over Oz's tail, falling into the Rider and spilling a large pot of numbweed paste all over the young man's front - and falling into him. When the two landed, Nevik got a face-full of numbing salve.

S'yn:

  • He's only recently met the new Wingrider but they had a good conversation about fire lizards up at the Star Stones. He seems like a descent fellow and is only a year or two older than he by appearances.

The firelizard you see is a mixture of greens that vary from the crisp bright of a blade of grass to the deep rich hue of a pine needle. Gleaming eyes of an iridescent, yellow-green mix watch you closely as though she were cautious of your intent but curious as to what you might be hiding.
