Common Knowledge

  • She has a lot of energy, and seems to always be going — just looking at her might tire out a quieter, slower-paced person.
  • Amarante has a strong aptitude for her field, always having done well on exams, but her bedside manner is a work in progress. It isn't to say she's rude at all, so much as may blurt something out that should have stayed inside her head rather than presented to the patient.
    • She also likes the gory work, having chosen wounds as her field of study, and seems to shy away from what many others would see as proper "women's work" — don't ask her to deliver a baby or talk much about botany, because she only knows the required minimum in those areas.
  • Her intense curiosity about everything has resulted in a natural propensity toward trouble. Not making it so much as finding it, or accidentally ending up embroiled in something she should have stayed far away from.
  • Came to Igen with a patchy black-and-white male feline who sits in the Infirmary when he can get away with it, and otherwise likes to lurk in the kitchen gardens.
  • She sometimes just … talks. To people. Regardless of if she has any idea who they are. It's always friendly. It's not always as good an idea as she thinks it is.

Insider Knowledge

  • She absolutely loves cleaning. She's not just a neat freak, she's the kind of neat freak who finds the act of cleaning itself soothing — she will clean your stuff for you, most likely, and consider it a gift to get to do so.
  • Her chattering and talking too fast is covering nerves more often than she would admit.
  • Spends WAY too much time in ill-advised emotional tangles with mysterious bad boy types, though it rarely ever goes anywhere and she also knows it's a bad habit.

Descriptions

hair: dark brown | eyes: hazel | height: 5'10 | skin: dusky-tan | age: 31

On the tall side at five foot ten, Amarante has bid goodbye to teenage awkwardness and grown into what one may have expected to become womanly curves. This could probably be classified as a failure, as she more has womanly angles and edges, a lean and rectangular frame without much prominent curve to speak of; the bit of a slouch she is perpetually guilty of does nothing to help. Her face is also best described as 'sharp': high, edged cheekbones, long, narrow nose and a squared jaw, with strong brows accenting wide almond-shaped hazel eyes. Deep brown hair, mostly straight and layered, is usually kept tied back and falls just past her shoulderblades. For an Igenite she is on the fair-skinned side, though foreigners might consider her olive shade dark. Long-fingered with calloused fingertips and large knuckles, it is clear she is one who often works with her hands — and that she has nervous habits, for her nails appear chewed to stubs.

Wearings

Her dress tends toward the purposeful but not overly plain; Amarante is often found in things like airy and long tunics that hang to mid-thigh with sleeves that fall just short of the elbows, dark twill pants and efficient but elegant low-top boots with heels that click just so. She's not one for adornments, rarely found in jewelry or anything nicer than perhaps a ribbon in her hair.

History

Off Camera

Originally born of Keroon, Amarante is the fourth child and second daughter to one of the Hold's posted Harpers and a Master Herder. To some surprise, despite her utter fascination and adoration of kittens from an early age, she didn't end up apprenticed to Herder or Harper either one, but choosing an utterly different direction from the rest of her family and moving from Keroon to the Fort area to join the Healer Hall at age thirteen.

While some of them came to visit her, she rarely ventured home throughout her apprenticeship, resulting in missing quite a bit — while she was there to see her eldest brother Impress at Igen and dash the family's hopes of his making Mastery like Dad, many smaller things escaped her notice. Her closeness to her older sister faded, and in the end Amarante chose to sit an exam rather than attend said sister's wedding, creating a small rift.

She was always fastidious and perfectionistic in her work, leading to a speciality in surgery and wound care that created some pushback — why wasn't she doing something more womanly, like botany, or midwifery? — but in which she also flourished. Amarante managed something of a social life at the Hall, carefully balancing her utter dedication to her career with getting to know actual people.

Maybe she got too comfortable, or maybe it really was just that her mentors wanted her to see more field experience, but autumn of the fifth turn of the 12th Pass had her sent somewhere else for her first posting supervised by an expert in the subfield. At first when she'd heard a mention of Igen, Amarante was excited to be going home; she had, of course, expected Igen Hold. Of course it wasn't, though. Of course it made sense for her to get experience and work firsthand with Threadscores, an important role for a healer focused on wounds and sutures. And of course she'd be glad to see her brother again — but she wasn't entirely sure about the wiseness of living at a Weyr.

On Camera Developments

  • Six months into her stay at Igen, Amarante vanished back to Healer Hall for some more advanced training.
  • She also spent two separate three-week stints at Vtol Swamp Hold.
  • Toward the end of Turn 7 of the 12th Pass, accepted Search at Southern in order to … get a free vacation, some exciting life experience and get Lisette and T'zaim out of a dragon-induced jam.
    • Much to her satisfaction, she failed to Impress and returned to Igen a couple of days after the Hatching, but visits Southern still. Multiple other attempts have been made to Search her by Igen riders, but she's continued to decline.
  • Was promoted to Journeyman on her 22nd turnday.

Relationships, Associations, First Impressions

Name Age Thoughts
Deiranten +30 T Father. Herder Master, breeds working livestock. They don't have a lot in common, but have a good enough relationship despite that.
Anseri +29 T Mother. Harper Sr. Journeyman, posted to Keroon Hold. Very little love lost; Amarante's mother doesn't understand her, and she doesn't really understand her mother, either.
F'mond +17 T Uncle (mother's younger brother). He's a lot more enjoyable to be around than her mother is, so it's nice that he's the one who lives in the same place she does.
A'dein +6 T Brother. Igen brownrider. A'dein rides his Imrilath with Hogback, and is the sibling Amarante is now closest to.
Deimara +3 T Sister. Wife of a wealthy cotholder, Amarante skipped Deimara's wedding to take exams when she was fifteen and they haven't been very close since. Firmly different beliefs on where women belong, and each represents what the other doesn't like.
Astalen + 1 T Brother. Herder recently-minted-journeyman; when they were kids they were too close in age to do anything but fight. Having grown up some, there might be a chance for a better relationship now.
Dirsante - 5T Brother. Herder apprentice. He was born after she left for Healer, and they don't really know each other.
