Description

Raven black hair and eyes nearly as dark stand out against D'kan's medium skin tones. He normally keeps his thick hair cut close, but when it gets a little long, it starts to take on a full and messy look. His high cheekbones lend to the almond shape of his eyes and can occasionally give his cheeks a slightly gaunt look. His slightly pointed chin and wide mouth give his face a mildly inverted triangle shape. A narrow and slightly upturned nose combine with small ears to give the young man a slightly impish cast, especially when he smiles. D'kan's height seems to have settled just shy of six feet. He might have started out lanky, but he's started to fill out in recent turns, aided in development and toning by good old-fashioned manual labor, also evidenced in the thick callouses on his hands. His shoulders have started to take on a broad, rounded look, but the rest of his frame has remained long and lean.

Common Knowledge

  • D'kan is one of those types who gets along with (most) everyone on a social level, and despite his sometimes overbearing lifemate, D'kan is very much the one in charge between the two of them.
  • D'kan loves to dance, so if he was present at a Gather or the like, there's the possibility he might already be familiar to some of Igen's folk.
  • Kazavoth is a talker, and not just to dragons. It has often gotten his rider in trouble in the past, but they seem to have (mostly) worked out some boundaries. Mostly.

Relationships

This is pretty limited to fellow Whirlwind riders at this point in time.

History

Kaeden started out as a dockhand at High Reaches Hold. He was searched for the Weyr while making a delivery, and a few months later, Kazavoth made him D'kan. After a somewhat rocky weyrlinghood (which was mostly D'kan putting out metaphorical fires unintentionally started by Kazavoth), the two of them settled fairly quickly into riderhood. For the most part, they kept their noses clean and did their duties, plus picking up some of the transport jobs listed earlier.

D'kan is something of a "company man". He's both willing and able to follow his leaders' orders. But only to a point. When Thread began falling in earnest, D'kan began to have his first inklings of discomfort with those same leaders. He saw disorganization. He saw waste. He saw a pigheaded resolve to keep trying the old ways, even if they were getting dragons and riders (and others) killed. This was Not Okay. He had heard of some of the "radical" things Igen was trying, and while he's kept his own thoughts of the particulars of that to himself thus far, he at least likes that they're trying. He also has a healthy dose of curiosity about all those Oldtimers, but with a pretty heavy counterbalance of wariness.

His transfer request was granted in the fourth month of the first turn of the pass, so he and Kazavoth began packing their bags and joined the riders of Igen's Whirlwind wing. There, they enjoyed a few Turns' worth of understated success, but after a string of deaths that hit the Weyr and wing one after another, one of which was felt far more keenly than the rest, the pair put in for a temporary transfer, leaving the destination up to the weyrleader. They were dispatched to Lemos, where Kazavoth's uncanny skill for moving and transporting large loads came in very handy, as they tag-teamed watchriding duties with a pair from Telgar.

Since then, the pair has filled in at several other Weyrs and Holds over the Turns as needed, but hopefully their wandering days are over, as they seem ready to settle into something more permanent.
