Description

Flyaway blond hair grows in riotous profusion, close-cut wheaten strands falling to the nape of his neck, framing his square-jawed face with careless abandon. Beneath thick, arching brows a few shades darker than his sun-kissed hair, grass-hued eyes watch with a deep-seated wariness that never quite fades entirely. His nose is broad and straight above firm lips often curved with a casual cheer that belies the vigilance of his gaze and the defiant jut of a strong, broad jaw lightly coated with pale stubble.

Tall and rangy, his frame is whipcord and muscle covered by sun-darkened skin, the pale gold nearly a match for the shade of his hair. Spare flesh he has little of; the play of muscles and flesh over bone suggest a lifetime of physical labor. His gear is simple; a broad-collared white shirt, sleeves rolled up above his elbows and laces undone to his breastbone. It is tucked into a pair of light linen pants dyed dark blue, hems draped untidily atop whatever footwear suits the day. A braided brown-dyed leather belt surrounds his slim waist, buckled in silver, supporting a simple sheathed belt-knife and a small pouch for everyday necessities.

History

Neither twin speaks much of their history before coming to Ista Isle; that they hail from Igen is no secret - their accents suggested as much when their foster parents, a pair of smallhold fishers, brought their two wilding children home. At first, they were wild, almost out-of-control, and it was a struggle for the hold to contain and control their antics. Over time, however, they gained some small veneer of civilization and repaid the efforts of their foster family by working at the family trade. Neither boy was particularly gifted for the art of fishing, but clever, nimble fingers could make short work of lure-tying and net-mending, freeing more able fishermen to haul in the day's catch.

It was the itinerant Journeyman that served their hold among others that first discovered the boys' true natural talents. Every sevenday or so, he'd come around to give the hold children their weekly harper lessons, and it was then that he discovered Jeymian's true gift for artistry, as well as Yajikim's talent for scribing. After promises wheedled and made and kept, and deals brokered and honored, the boys found themselves shipped off to Fort Hold and the Harper Hall to apprentice.

They were no better and no worse than most of their peers - more rambunctious than some, less inclined towards serious trouble than others. They made friends, they made rivals, they excelled in some ways and proved useless in others. Neither was particularly musically inclined, although Jeymian could hold his own with the pipes, but when put to work in the archives, they made the Hall's Master Archivist weep for joy at having not one, but two capable - and willing - apprentices. With Jeymian's artistic talents, it was natural for him to segue into illustrations and illuminations, while Yajikim's beautiful script and flair for the artistic word made him the archivist's pet scribe. But where the two truly shone was when they worked together - between the two of them, they showed a true talent for restoring old and damaged manuscripts, repairing or rewriting as required.

They walked the tables as Journeymen at the age of twenty, and went right back into the Hall's archives. In them, the Hall saw an opportunity; always, there was a clamor from the Holds, Halls, and Weyrs about Pern for skilled harpers to come and help save and restore archives damaged by time, disaster, and neglect. At a suggestion from their master, the twins traded in their cushy Hall life for the lives of itinerant Harpers. Their duties? To visit every Hall, every Hold, every Weyr, and to assess their archives to determine an individual plan of action for each to help restore, revive, and refresh the records stored within.

And so, a bit more than halfway through their twenty-first year, their journeys brought them to Southern Weyr, one more stop on the long, long path they'd trod around Pern…
