Get busy living, or get busy dying.

Description

Lean and hard describe this man perfectly, in both body and soul. Slabs of muscle from hard labor are the only meat on his spare six-foot frame, the planes of his face knife-sharpened by hardship. Black hair kept short is going prematurely grey, oddly distinguished in contrast to a face yet young in years despite an overlying scruff. There is a story here, limned in the implacable jaw and various scars that mar his skin, though the shuttered gaze from slate-grey eyes gives nothing away; no windows to this man's soul they. Yet there is gentleness in the curve of full lips, and lines radiate from the corners of intelligent eyes to suggest that in another life, this man was prone to laughter.

Clothes

Quellek wears the unmistakable garb of the convict; coveralls when working or pants and tunic when not, they are all dark grey and well worn, with "convict" across the back, boots on his feet.

History

Quellek was born the fourth son of a minor holder in Nabol. They raised ovines and all the boys were expected to work with the stock, but it was clear very early on that Quellek was quite bright and might have a different future. The hold harper who taught the children of the holding found him to be especially good with numbers but also with a nice hand at scripting. The harper suggested that Quellek could be better used in another capacity than herding ovine; his father was an outdoor man and not much inclined to books himself. He turned the books of the holding over to his son, who quickly proved himself quite capable of keeping them neatly and concisely and this became his permanent job.

Upon his father's death and his older brother's taking over of the hold when Quellek was fifteen, the hold harper suggested that he apply to a larger hold for a position. Knowing that there was nothing really for him where he was, Quellek did just that. He found a position as assistant to the steward of one of the larger minor holds, a place much more complex than his father's own, where he seemed to settle in nicely; he was making some money, he had a talent for the job, and he got on well with the steward. He even had a girl he was thinking on marrying, the steward's daughter, who seemed to return his burgeoning love. Quellek was going places.

It all fell apart about a Turn after he started working in his position. Someone stole a shipment of precious jewels that had just been delivered; no one knew about the delivery but the holder, the steward, and Quellek, who had been entrusted with inventorying them and adding them to the strongbox, then the strongroom when he was through. Which he had done with his usual efficiency and careful attention to detail. Only the next morning, the jewels were gone and there were no obvious signs of a break-in; the only thing they could see was an inside job. So they did a search and, in doing so, found one of the gems in Quellek's possessions, hidden away as if he were trying to keep it from view. Despite his protestations of innocence, he was convicted summarily and sentenced to five Turns of hard labor.

He was sent initially to a mine in the north, where he seemed to be a model prisoner and, two Turns in, had earned himself a transfer to Southern Barrier Hold; that is until just a few days before his transfer, when he learned that the girl he had planned to marry was now wedded to the holder's second son, Jerkinan, a man with whom Quellek had a run in when Jerkinan had tried to get Quellek to embezzle funds from his father in exchange for a cut. Quellek had felt honor bound to report the matter to his boss, the steward, and the son had been shipped off in disgrace. After Quellek's sentencing, however, the second son had indicated Quellek had been the one to suggest the embezzlement scheme; with Quellek's reputation in shreds, the holder believed his son and welcomed him back into the fold. It became clear to Quellek that he had been somehow duped by Jerikan and Ryekelia, the girl he had planned to wed; being a smart lad, Quellek put two and two together.

Quellek's rage knew no bounds when he heard the news. He picked a fight with several prisoners and beat them bloody, as well as injuring a few guards, before they could contain him. While no one was permanently damaged, Quellek did have a Turn added to his sentence. However, after that initial rage all the fight seemed to have left him; he became a model prisoner again; as the one misstep seemed to be an aberration, the plan to send him to Southern Barrier Hold, which had been canceled due to his little 'incident,' was once again put into effect. So, he was shipped to SBH and managed to survive three more Turns in the biting cold; he's got one more to go so long as he doesn't fall through the cracks or lose it again.

A Turn or so Later…

Finally, Quellek is free. He and Hunzak were paroled at the same time, but while his friend stayed in Southern, Quellek has returned to the Northern Continent in search of work. But there's not much use for his skills as a steward/accountant, not when he's been convicted of stealing from his employer and imprisoned. So since his release he's been taking odd jobs here and there, mostly manual labor (something he's become very accustomed to over the past six Turns), making enough marks to get him to the next hold as he travels, looking for somewhere to perhaps stay for a while. The need for warmth has eventually brought him to Igen's desert, and the Weyr's bazaar specifically, where he seems content to stay and rebuild his meager finances by fighting in The Pit. He's known as a vicious fighter, quick and able to take a lot of punishment. He wins more often than not, and is making a name for himself as a fighter who can go multiple rounds in one night. He's saving all he can, for 'someday.' And something, though as yet that is undefined in his mine beyond somewhere quiet. He doesn't seem to need companionship but has the reputation as a bit of a loaner.
