SABIK
Location Kurkar Hold
Position Thief/Ex Guard
Birthplace The Desert
Played By Mido Hamada

Description

Desert selection gave him dark hair like obsidian flint, and often just as dust-covered, cropped close to the scalp on the sides of his head and longer on top, curly. It leaves him deeply tanned, finding familiarity with the sun and how each day it measures his mortality. Hard as spear points, brown eyes nearly match the darkness of their pupils. Tall, but barely, the man is lean enough to know hunger and muscled enough to sometimes keep him a step ahead of it. Scars of a hard life not over are often covered by fabric, but they're there in plenty.

Typical robes protect breeches and leather as well as his own hide. He can be obscure if he wants to be.

Common Knowledge

History

Nomads. Holdless. Sand wraiths. The colonists who settled the desert were extremely resilient people who were never very plentiful. The desert has a way of aging people, a home like no other, paradise of open space and of endless sky, and all it slowly takes is your life essence in return.

Sabik was raised by an aunt when his parents died in a flash flood. He experienced the rituals and rites that made him a piece of the desert. Then at seventeen he left it for Igen Hold to sign up with their guard. And now he isn't. If anyone knew him now they'd have taken him for a common cutthroat and they wouldn't have been disappointed. Part of a band of highwaymen who patrolled the trade roads on fast runners, robbed travelers, tithe wagons, cotholds. Then, like ghosts, they'd disappear into the desert.

On occasion he was legitimately hired as a guide.

After the circle of events that happened in the Underground, he was captured with several others of the Rokuul and took responsibility for the misdeeds assigned to the area. Baham disappeared into the desert. Qulandei tried to break him out of Igen Weyr's brig but Sabik chose to remain and got transported to a chain of small islands off the Igen-Ista border.

For four years the men, women, and children lived and died, aided occasionally by a kind man from the mainland who brought food and medicine. When the penal colony discovered firestone on their island, they sent samples via the boatman and in time Igen Weyr and the Minecraft assumed control of the resources. Given the option to help mine and have their sentences absolved, Sabik and others eventually resettled in the Weyr, then Kurkar Hold.
