Description

An overlying scruffiness cannot hide the sheer perfection of this man's face, a perpetual five o'clock shadow and midnight hair in permanent need of a trim softening the sharp angles and bold lines coming together in classical symmetry; carved jaw, bladed nose, high cheekbones. Full lips are wasted in the midst of such masculinity, winged brows saved from femininity by their thickness and a thin white scar. It's the eyes, though, that arrest: Clear cerulean like a summer sky that goes on forever, a framing tangle of too-long, sooty lashes only enhancing the deep, fathomless blue. Only when you get past the eyes can you see the rest of the sculpture in sharp relief from broad shoulders to narrow hips, lean length reaching it's pinnacle just a shade past six feet; smoothly tanned flesh stretches taut over slabbed muscle and corded tendon, every plane and ridge defined as if carved from stone.

Clothing Description

Tanjek wears simple garb well suited to his job as a stable hand - one doesn't wear finery to muck stalls and haul about hay and grain, after all. Trousers are soft leather, faded black and supple from wear, worn over half boots of sturdier wherhide to protect from sharp hooves. A blue woven jerkin completes the outfit in a deep blue to match his eyes; more often than, however, the workday finds him going shirtless in Igen's heat so that his the broad shoulders, chest, and back and washboard stomach are all baked a deep, deep brown.

History

Tanjek hails from the dustbowl of Igen, a small runner-breeding holding. His father, Tobrek, was married very young to a neighboring Holder's daughter by Talmrek, Tanjek's grandsire, in order to gain possession of a few mares from a coveted bloodline (he had no chance at the stud) that he wished to add to those of his own runners. Tobrek was a handsome young man and he could have any woman he wished (precocious, he lost his virginity at the tender age of 13). Unfortunately, his new bride had a distinct resemblance to the runners that her father bred. Tobrek loathed her but managed to get an heir on her; after 10 Turns of miscarriages on Janka's part she delivered a healthy son, Tanjek.

For her part, Janka adored Tobrek with a devotion that bordered on obsessive; it made her an indifferent mother since most of her energy was taken up with getting Tobrek to notice her. Unfortunately, after she produced his heir, Tobrek left her bed and never returned; not only didn't he give her the time of day, he flaunted his liaisons with other younger, more attractive women in front of her regularly. Tobrek's neglect and 10 Turns of losing babies sank Janka into a melancholy that had her imaging herself constantly ill; in short, she turned hypochondriac and, despite loving Tanjek, could not spare energy from her self-pity and mourning past losses to cherish her only living offspring. Shortly after Tanjek turned 4, his mother's imagined illness turned into reality; she contracted an infection of the lungs and died.

Tobrek, now freed of the annoyance of an unloved wife, was free to continue his philandering ways unchecked; but it wasn't long before he met and married Binala, the very pretty, very young daughter of another of his neighbors. Now the roles were reversed; Tobrek loved his new wife with devoted intensity, whereas she was more ambitious than in love. Her own father's holding had been smaller than Tobrek's; she saw the marriage as a step up to something better and she used all her wiles to get it. So it wasn't long after the marriage (less than 9 months, some say) that she gave birth to Tanjek's half-brother, Tobin. Binala was a better mother to Tobin than Janka had been to Janek; she refused a foster mother and raised him herself; for Tanjek, however, she had nothing to give. He stood in the way of her child inheriting, after all. In Tobrek's presence she was sweetness and light to Tanjek; without Tobrek as a buffer, she was cold and hard; Tanjek suffered a variety of petty cruelties at her hands. When he tried to tell his father, Tobrek dismissed his son's words, unable to believe his sweet wife could be abusive.

Despite everything, Tanjek loved his half brother, Tobin. He was the only good thing in his life, caught as he was between an indifferent father and Binala's ambition; he and Tobin were constant companions as they grew up at the holding, learning the ins and outs of breeding runners, working together in the stables and in various other tasks, playing the games that little boys play together.

At 14, Tanjek was a strapping lad, tall for his age and with the handsomeness that had garnered his own sire the early attention of women young and old. One would have called him pretty, except for a certain something that announced his masculinity even at such an early age. Unfortunately, he also showed himself to have a knack for choosing the best bloodlines to breed and create better and better runners. His sire began to show his pride and pleasure in his heir freely; too freely. Binala understood that the only way to gain Tobin the position of heir was to rid herself of Tanjek. She gave Tobrek an ultimatum; he had to choose between his wife and his son. It was a hard choice; Tobrek was proud of his son, indeed; but he loved his wife with a consuming passion that surpassed anything else. The decision made, Tobrek decided Tanjek would be sent away to foster at another runner-breeding hold, a 2 days' journey assuring he'd not be around much to irritate Binala.

Reluctantly did Tanjek leave Tobin behind but the day dawned when he set out, riding the runner he'd raised from a foal with a few of his father's men as escort. Only when a message came from his foster hold that the group never arrived did a search begin - the results were grim: The two men were found dead, their throats slit. The runners were long gone, stolen by the ruffians who had ambushed the traveling party after half-day's ride. Only a few of Tanjek's belongings, scattered along the edge of the road, were left of the boy himself.

Over six years had passed since Tanjek disappeared without a trace when tragedy struck again; Tobrek had a heart attack and passed away, leaving Binala with 15-year-old Tobin too young to take over the holding. The inevitable happened, of course. Since a holding without a man to hold it is always in danger, it wasn't long before a man came to claim not only the land, but Binala as well; Gordnal promptly got her with child and, when she bore him a son, Gorbin, he sent Tobin on his way (circle of life, yo).

The question is, where has Tanjek been all this time?

The answer is that Tanjek's been at Igen Weyr; picked up half dead, he woke up in the infirmary to find he remembered nothing about his previous life other than his name. With no past, he has built a new life as a stablehand, assisted with the combined affection of the 'girls' at Rosie's who, charmed by his plight and his boyish handsomeness, looked out for him and 'raised' him their way. He's a charming young man indeed with their training behind him, and quite a ladies' man, but he still has no remembrance of his past. However, of late he's begun to have worsening headaches and nightmares; is he remembering, finally? It's possible; these new symptoms began right after Tobin came to the Weyr….
