Note of Caution: Thierry may not be the fluffiest character in scenes; RP with him can lean towards the grittier/darker side of things. If you're ok with that, cool! If not, please let me know and I'll tone down as necessary. Please see below for an elaborated version of this message.

Description

Skin's sun-kissed shade complements his floppy dark locks and warm brown eyes, a telltale sign of ample time spent in Rukbat's glow. The angular lines of his face are not entirely unbecoming though neither particularly stand-out - they're a rough sort of medium, neither memorable nor completely forgettable. No amount of grooming seems able to make him entirely presentable; there's either fluff or stubble on his jaw and chin, and attempts at taming his near-black hair, kept trimmed at a length somewhere between eye- and jaw-level, are rarely successful. All 5'11 of his wiry frame tells a tale of activity, possibly even adventure; what scars are visible - and there are many - are lingering reminders of adversities past, whether large or small.

Notes on appearance:

  • His clothing is pretty unremarkable - leaning towards shabby, in fact, with plenty of patch-jobs and a definite hand-me-down feel. Oh, the joys of being the youngest brother!
  • Whatever he's wearing, he'll have a Sersang patch on him somewhere; it's a stylised red tunnelsnake on a black diamond background. It's by his knot on regular clothes, and near his wrist on the sleeve of his guard uniform.

Common Knowledge

  • His family runs the Bazaar's tunnelsnake fighting ring.
  • There are more men than women in his family; they're a rough lot (even the girls), and don't have the best reputation.
  • What reputation they do have, though, is of being… flexible in their business. Yes, they may be involved in organised bloodsports, but rumour has it that there's very little a Sersang won't do for the right price.
  • As for Thierry himself? He used to be seen hanging out with his Street'snakes gang or a couple of his dad's workers, handling a mobile 'snake-fighting ring and taking bets around the edges. Now, he's more likely seen smoking a toke and hanging out in the bazaar's darker sidestreets.
  • The reputation he's built for himself is not a pleasant one. It's probably well-deserved and well-earned.
  • Used to join Cha'el for an intense work-out/training session/anger management in the Weyr.
  • He hangs out with Reilan a lot, and is pretty protective of him.
  • Was asked to Stand for Elicheritath and Sekhaenkath's clutch by Tuli on the 10th day of the third month of the first turn of the 12th pass. He didn't Impress. It wasn't surprising - streetrats like him have no business on dragons.
  • He keeps a knife tucked into his boot, which he's often seen playing with. It's small and kept in a slim black leather sheathe, narrow and balanced for throwing, about the length of a finger and a half, with the handle wrought handsomely yet simply of obsidian. It was a gift from Kyara.
  • Thierry is a worthless streetrat with no future, who has barely been seen since he packed up his things in the candidate barracks. No-one knows where he is beyond 'somewhere in the bazaar', and likely no-one cares either; what's one less bazaar fuck-up to worry about? A blessing, that's what.

Personality

  • Like the rest of the men in his family, he's disdainful of women - though he is not quite as bad as his male relatives. He's working on it, and has even made a few female pseudo-friends.
  • Trustworthy? Untrustworthy? Thierry might come across as both, depending on who he's with, where things are going, and whoever's got the highest bid to buy his loyalty.
  • Oldtimers? Not so sure about them. He's not a fan of their ways and certainly not a fan of their women's attitudes, and yet he's found exceptions amongst their ranks.
  • Believes there's no future in the Weyr for anyone of Bazaar origins - something he's learnt first-hand.
  • He's an opportunist, a trait that comes from his father (if he even is his father) getting him less involved in the direct running of the tunnelsnake fighting ring.
  • Kind of a leader - or at least he was a leader of his little gang, before being forced onto the right side of the law. Whether he was a good leader is questionable.
  • Not necessarily one to think things through. He'll jump into an opportunity without considering the consequences.
  • Thinks he's smarter than he actually is.
  • He's a fickle, worthless sack of shit, really. He has regressed from any progress made pre-Search and has abandoned - or been abandoned by - near enough everyone and everything he knew before. Today, he'll likely pick your pocket more than say hi.

History

normal_012.jpg

Rumour has it that around the time Abeirya fell pregnant with Thierry, Tharrier was recovering from a severe blow to the nether region that left him incapable of doing his husbandly duties. Whether the rumour's true or not, little Thierry was born into the world, and the rumour that he was another man's never quite died down. If anything, the fact that he proved to be a little less broad and a little less coarse-featured than his brothers and sister before him, and that Abeirya bore no more children after him, only added fuel to the fire. That could be the reason why Tharrier pushed his supposedly youngest child out onto the outskirts of the family business, as, growing up, Thierry was less involved in the inner runnings than his siblings were - even his sister has a role to play in the intricate workings of the tunnelsnake fighting ring.

When he was old enough to escape whoever was charged with caring for him he would, running wild on the bazaar streets, dodging in and out of the tunnelsnake rearing pens, or sneaking his fingers into the pockets of the ring's punters. That was pretty much how he grew up, with minimal time in Harper lessons, no interest in being properly involved in the business, and only working when his father clipped his ear to make him. Thierry did, however, find that his rough upbringing lent itself rather well to him filling a particular niche at the ring… by using the gift of the gab to spread the word on the Bazaar's streets.

As a tout for the tunnelsnake fighting ring he was good at reeling in business… amongst the men, at least. His turns spent meandering the bazaar's streets taught him the value of diversification; it's developed an opportunistic streak in him that, despite whatever's between them, his father has come to appreciate. He may be the youngest mind in the Sersang family, but Thierry's got ideas that go places… or that get him into trouble. Frequently both.

… such as the trouble he got into when he tried pushing his luck a little too far with weyrwoman Tuli. It landed him in the brig, and his freedom came with a choice: exile to the Western Isles, or join the guard. Naturally, he chose the latter - who wouldn't? The biggest shock came to him when he actually realised he enjoyed wearing his new uniform.

An even bigger shock came when Tuli asked him to stand for her Elicheritath's eggs, but unsurprisingly, he didn't Impress. Dragons don't pick Bazaar kids, right? And that left him in somewhat of a quandary; his position at the guard meant nothing to him any more, with little interest in returning. His parents didn't like that he up and left them to go to the Weyr, so he lost his home there until he managed to wheedle his way back in with his mum, though it's a precarious situation at best - he knows as well as the rest of his family that he's staying there on borrowed time, while his dad comes up with a way to get him out.

What's a streetrat with no future to do when the worlds he lives in either don't want him, don't accept him, or don't suit him? That's what Thierry has to find out, and he's disappeared into streetrat life as he works out whether he truly has any value, or if he's as worthless as everyone says he is.

The Sersang Family

Members of Thierry's family. All are employed within the tunnelsnake fighting ring.

The Street'snakes

The gang of guys who Thierry used to hang out with, who've been named in RP. There's half a dozen of them or so in total, all bazaar-born.

Firelizards

Brown Rat
Grey-fawn, unremarkable, squat and rounded, this little brown is easily overlooked amongst his fledged brethren. His bullet-blunt muzzle ends with a hint of dusky dark pink, which melds into the dirty taupe that unevenly covers the rest of his stocky little body beneath the liberal flecking of dustbunny grey. Huge eyes, huge headknobs, roughly-hewn 'ridges and a whipcord light tail do not the best conformation make, though there might be something endearing about the pink that lines the bottom of all four of his soot-smudged paws.
Inspiration: A common brown rat.

Gold Snake
Long, lithe, lean and mean; this gold is whippet-thin and elongated, with large bug-like eyes and a cant to the ridges above them that gives her the appearance of serpentine nastiness. Dull in colour, lacking the shine of her brethren, her face is a dusty metallic, more dun-shine than gold, and streaked with black across eyes and headknobs. The same dust-shade hue sweeps back across her slender length, lightening to a smoky cream along her underside, and amber's gloss and poison black alternating along her spine. Those juxtaposed shades of amber's heat and night's pitch are smudged out across her wings, the leading edges of which are mottled with brown so dark as to be near-black, in some lights.
Inspiration: Tiger Keelback snake.

Green Trundlebug
This rough-hewn lady is beetleshine green, dark and sooty, with the shimmer of golden-blue across her carapace-tough hide. She's all angles and sharpness, pincer-toed and needle-nosed; no delicate craftsmanship went into her creation, from the sharp end of her over-curved muzzle and head, to the bulbous curves of her body, down to the black tips of her oft-used claws.
Inspiration: Green rose chafer beetle.
