W'rin (Wairin)
Location Igen
Position Weyrleader
Dragon Bronze Valiuth
Birthplace Telgar
Played By Brock Lesnar

Description

A weathered man, W'rin; deep wrinkles groove the sun-roughened skin of his forehead, aging him a number of years beyond his chronological turns. The matching creases that line his mouth are mostly-masked by a beard of somewhat-greying stubble, giving him the perpetual aura of a frown. His eyes, intense and steely blue, are small compared to the remainder of his features, but most of all, his prominent, wide nose. His lips are all-but-obscured by facial hair, to the point that it's difficult to discern where nose hairs end and mustache begins. Age may collect interest on the weathered tan of his skin, but not his physique: squared chin matches well with thick neck terminating shortly into barrel chest and broad shoulders. Limbs do not lack in length, and their muscled girth make the hard, dense man look even bigger than he is.

Common Knowledge

He's Whirlwind's Wingleader. He's tough to work for, but his riders are good. Really. Good. Though clearly he has loyalty to his wing and and there are rumors he cares for his few friends, socially he's less adept, and can come across as rude - even when he doesn't mean to be.

Relationships

Father: Rh'ys +25 (bronze Finnith, Telgar)
Older Brother: Zander +4 (Smith Master)
Younger Brother: K'pher -5 (bronze Ujarath, Telgar)

Children: Airnna and Kelium -37.5
L'ri -20 (bronze Cignalusath, Southern)

A'lory - A once trusted friend, W'rin currently thinks he's gone off the deep end a bit. Their bromance is definitely on the fritz.
Cha'el - Once Weyrsecond, wingsecond. A trusted companion, who went off an became weyrleader of Southern. Rude.
F'dan - Relatively new to Igen, but W'rin finds him someone he can work with. He respects both his ability and his ideas, though not his way with the goldriders - it really makes the weyrleader's life much harder. He's made F'dan weyrsecond - provided he learns to talk to goldriders.
K'vvan - W'rin sees a lot of potential in him, but he also wants to bash his head against a wall sometimes.
Kyara - He sees potential in the young woman, but she has a ways to go. He'd especially like it if she'd use less words, get the point and address the issues. He believers to the have the potential of a great thinker, but those thoughts need to be put into action and not over analyzed. Hesitation kills.
Linny - Good traits, she's smart, she's good looking and she has the ability to be one of the guys. Bad traits, she uses her boobs to try and get what she wants, she underplays her brains, she tries to use sex instead of talk to him like a reasonable person. All in all he respects her, but they have some work to do on their work relationship.
L'ri - The adult son W'rin recently met, he was unaware of his existence until the bronzerider join Southern and came to tell him.
Mayte - His fake daughter, he met the girl when she was just an apprentice with the Vinters and felt an immediate paternal instinct. Now she's mostly grown up with a gold dragon and one of his junior weyrwomen. It's nice to have one sane goldrider around.
N'thu and Teyaschianniarina - Generally W'rin has respect for the man, more than just the title, but thinks was young and made rash decisions when he made them at all, as weyrleader. He had no problem with a brownrider as a weyrsecond, though he was unsure about a female in the rank, and Teya did little to sway him to change his opinion.
Sadaiya - Sr. Weyrwoman. An oldtimer. W'rin trusts and respects her. He even considers her a friend, though they their friendship is a fiery one and they often butt heads. They are learning out to work with each other. And more importantly, they both WANT Igen to succeed.
Sienna - W'rin's weyrmate, has two children with her. Twins, a boy and a girl. Airnna and Kelium.

(This is just what W'rin sees, I the player make no claim one way or the other about the validity of the above thoughts)

History

Wairin’s history is rather unremarkable in the beginning. Rarely a discipline issue, the boy was serious from the beginning. Of un-humored personality, he was rarely seen in the midst of a large group of weyrbrats. As serious in chores as in play he was simply one of those children that sense a great solemnity in all things. A large child, at least a wide child, he was good at physical games, but would just as willingly be occupied with a puzzle or teaser. He was not the brightest of the children but he was adept at fitting things together and making connections.

As he grew older his father, a Telgar bronzerider, had little faith his middle son would amount to much of anything at the weyr and sent him off to the smithcraft. He was neither the worst nor the best apprentice, but it wouldn’t matter because at the age of 19 he was searched by Igen, much to the chagrin of his Telgarian father. His impression to Valiuth did not help family relations but what could be done? Unaccustomed to the culture of the weyr coupled with his rather cold personality W’rin did not warm many hearts to friendship, but he was a good rider. And he was able to move quickly through the ranks of his wing.

Throughout the turns he ran Whirlwind, the only wing in Igen that was any good. Small in number, though larger in size, and elite. His riders are good, real good, by Pern standards. Any rider with potential and a dedication to an extreme amount of work can become the best they can be under his guidance. It isn’t easy to be tapped, and because of his skill at formations and strategy the weyrleader allows it. It is harder to be a rider in Whirlwind, strict in drills, sweeps and time, in their free time his riders play hard, they are a rough group though loyal to each other- and W’rin has their respect even if they do not like his personality. He’s driven by his duty and his loyalty to his weyr – he will do whatever it takes to make sure they survive.

He was behind Ri'enn's plans, sometimes one has to lie, bend the truth, and extort others for the greater good. There are lingering feelings of guilt after, of inner turmoil, but these things must be done. And so a small band of bronzeriders, and a few others, jumped back 400 years and brought the oldtimers back with them, and their fighting dragons…and some of their stuff. With the influx of female riders, who were good W'rin has left behind, most of, his sexism (at least about fighting dragons). No need to waste a good rider, whether there is a dick in the tights or not. And while he sees greens and blues as necessary and often smart, he's been a starch denier of giving them (most) ranks. Though he, himself, put a female greenrider as assistant weyrlingmaster. A move which pissed off more than a few.

Things have been complicated since then. Valiuth caught the first oldtimer queen that went up, and that should have been the end of the matter, but after 6 long turns Vergora's gold broke her dry spell. To say it was a disaster would be an understatement, eventually the old queen died, and left a double clutch on the sands, and N'thu as weyrleader by himself.

He did a stint as Sandblasts wingleader, after Q'fex defected to Southern Weyr as their weyrleader. It was uncomfortable for everyone, but he dug in and eventually most of the riders responded, he took them from being bat ass crazy and awful, to bat ass crazy and flyable.

Corelle, a goldriding transfer from Telgar who he knew as a kid, was the next queen to go up in a senior flight and Valiuth (the sneaky bastard) caught. Leaving Igen with a rage in a cage weyrleader. Things didn't last long, and the weyr, known for being a hard place to live, was left senior-less again when the woman was poisoned.

Sadaiya was the next to claim the senior slot, and despite W'rin's best efforts to flee the confines of the weyr when the flight happened, he once again found himself with the weyrleader knot and his dragon on the sands.

It has been rocky to say the least. He's good at thread. Scary good. It consumes his life, so the weyr will survive. But his lack of people skills, coupled with a strange move to put Trek, a bluerider in as a wingleader of Arroyo has left more than a few wondering if he's got the ability to do anything else at all.
