Egg Touching Pose

It's so strange, that hardened rough look married to the smooth feel of the shell; glints of gold hidden in craggy depths that aren't really there. Who knows what lies within this ancient chest, abandoned for so long, clinging to its one protective purpose…to keep what is within, within. And what is within feels old, for all it must be so young, a dark ancient presence that reaches out tentacles of thought. And you, Stefan? Are you what you seem? Or is there something else, something strange, buried within?

Ancient Chest Egg

Ancient and worn this egg looks. From crown to base the aged look of ancient wood creeps across the shell in a fragmented pattern. The mind plays tricks and what it actually sees is the roughness of splintering wood instead of the smooth surface of a shell. Glints of gilded gold flicker from odd spots, tempting the eye to look for treasures of old.

Egg Inspiration

Ancient treasure chests brought up from the sea!

Hatching Message

Ancient Chest Egg starts to hatch with just hairline fractures that blend so well with the fragmented patterns of shell it's likely that most will not even notice this egg is beginning to break. There's some subtle wobbling and shifting about of the egg in the sand, and then finally one sturdy crack splits horizontally across the surface, racing around the circumference. The top is pushed upward from within (much as a lid lifting to reveal the treasure inside), and wet liquid spills out onto the sand through the jagged crack. There — resting as if lounging in his own private pool — a dull brown dragonet's head swivels around, slowly blinking and surveying the sandy expanse with determined patience. Some time passes before he moves, but finally the egg is tipped forward and the brown hatchling slithers out with the rest of the liquid as if poured from a pitcher, his brown hide dark and slick as he steps onto the wet sand.

Hauled From the Depths Brown Dragonet

At first glance, this brown dragon doesn't grab the eye. He's stockily built with wide shoulders, full torso, and strong wings. His hide is a muted grayish brown not unlike the desaturated trunks of trees that lie dormant in the winter, or the murky depths of a river where the gently swirling mud is dark and foggy. Along his spine, a more intense hue of reddish-brown rust accentuates each ridge, a splash of color that both draws the eye and warns of potential danger, for this unassuming dragon has tremendous strength. Thick muscles bunch along his hind quarters, and there's power in his enveloping wings. Examining more closely, the seemingly drab brown hide shows hidden complexity and beauty. Along his eye ridges are fine metallic speckles of gold and bronze that catch the light and make those faceted orbs of color all the more pronounced. It's a delightful treasure any that are intimate with the dragon will enjoy, for it cannot be seen when viewed from afar. Along his broad, deathly sharp talons are streaks of green akin to see algae. That green tinting climbs halfway up his limbs until it blends into the earthy tones of his flanks.

I wanted to make sure there were elements of all stages of the creation process reflected in Bavyth's description, but I also wanted him to represent what you were looking for. He's not overly pretty and he certainly doesn't grab the eye from a distance, but neither would a murky treasure chest that's been sitting on the floor of a sea for decades. It would be covered in mud and algae, fasteners rusted and easily overlooked.

Bavyth, too, is easily overlooked, but any that take the time to study the brown dragon will find cause to be impressed because he holds great value inside. He has stamina and strength that will make him a true asset to any wing he flies in. He can fly an entire fall and then some. He is strong, steady, and dependable.

Public Impression Pose

It was a difficult path across the hatching ground for Hauled From the Depths Brown Dragonet, with so many other dragonets abandoning sharp shards of eggs and making fast progress towards the waiting candidates. Small hills of pushed around sand had to be conquered. He's had to shove aside crowding candidates that try to catch his attention, flinging himself clumsily past them with so much disregard that he barely even registers their presence. He creels in frustration as he moves on, the sound hard on the ears and harder still on the heartstrings. Where is his rider?! Is there no one for him? There was another lone brown left on the sands not so long ago. Southern Weyr remembers that hatching keenly. Now only this one brown is left. The small hunter searches doggedly, struggling through the shell debris and across the hot sand with hunger and loneliness gnawing at his gut. A newly matched pair move to leave the sands and that's when Stefan is visible again. There he is! The determined little brown heads right to him, staring up at him.

Private Impression Message

It's a roaring rush of water, the new presence flooding itself into your mind. Small pieces of you are swept away by the deluge while other bits are saturated and transformed to something entirely different. « St'fan! » Love. Adoration. Endless devotion. The torrent of emotion slams into your being, nearly overwhelming you with it's unrelenting strength and power. « I am your Bavyth. I am glad we found each other. I would not have accepted anyone else. » He sounds so completely certain of this and your mind is forever locked together with his. « I have a secret for you. I am very hungry. » You're not sure if he understands what a secret is, exactly, but you can definitely feel his hunger gnawing at you.

Mindvoice

2.jpg

Overall - An ocean current. The murky depths of a tide pool. Rain flung through the air by strong winds.

3.jpg

Happy - Glittering drops of water in the air from a splash, a spray of mist against the sun. LIght refracting through that liquid, scattering fragmented bits and pieces of rainbow throughout your mind. His joy is a warm summer day, late in the afternoon. There's a childlike wonder seeped into it all, it filters not only into his own thoughts but into yours as well. You can't help but follow along and allow your heart to be filled with it too.

4.jpg

Focused/Tireless - Swirling waters of a river where they've scoured away at the rocks. The monsoons that go on and on and on. If you ever go to Igen to visit, St'fan, you'll find ancient rivers that have been in the same place long enough that they've dug deep grooves into the rock. Creating deep canyons, with the water reflecting sunlight way down below. You'll find that same kind of determination in your boy. You'll hear that quality and know he's working, trudging along and putting that effort in. No matter how long it takes. It's a constant, steady grind.

5.jpg

Angry - The blast of a fire hose or pressure washer. His fury will be an unforgiving, harsh, scouring spray upon your mind, endlessly peeling away each layer of mental resistance you can muster and leaving you reeling. It's utterly overwhelming in the beginning, and you will have more than your fair share of migraines that send you to the healers more than once as you are forced to cope with the aftermath of that psychic onslaught. Hopefully the staff are understanding of how a dragon's fit of rage can crush the weyrling. However, as you both learn control over the link, your mind grows stronger and hardens against this barrage while Bavyth in turns learns to temper his emotions and direct them outwards.

6.jpg

Sad - Once he's calmed down, Bavyth will feel great remorse for the pain he's caused you. Whenever he's sad? He withdraws, sinking down, down, down to the lightless depths of the sea, settling into the thick mud and burying himself in it. There his presence remains, unmoving and in no great hurry to be restored to the surface. He needs time, generally. Time and patience. Your soothing bond will need to continually wash over him, bathing him like a warm current that gently pushes the muck away until his bright, radiant presence can be found again.

Physicalities

7.jpg
8.jpg

Water - Much as the Scorpio is a water sign, Bavyth loves the water. He often comments that when he was still in the egg he felt like he was under the sea. If there's a body of water, Bavyth will want to be in it. It doesn't matter if it's a pond, river, stream, torrential downpour, or raging waterfall, this brown feels a yearning to be wet. He can handle flying in all but the worst of weather and has the strength to easily fly in the rain when other dragons would flag from the weight of the water on their wings.

9.jpg

His eyes are a unique treasure. Any dragon's eyes are gorgeous and a rider could get lost in them, but Bavyth's are more. They're accentuated by those metallic speckles of gold and bronze that glitter in the sunlight. I think of it as the light that sparkles off the surface of a public fountain, where the basin of is filled with coins that people have tossed in for wishes.

10.jpg

His broad talons are a loose tie-in to the strong pincers of a scorpion, a natural weapon that looks unwieldy at first, but isn't to be trifled with when put to use. Woe to the herdbeast that underestimates this dragon when he's hungry.

11.jpg

One last secret, the pattern of golden spots halfway along his tail. They resemble stars arranged in a constellation - a pair of talons with a long winding tail. — The secret pattern on his tail is the constellation scorpio. Most people would never see it, but since you'll be spending so much time scrubbing every inch of this brown hide to be sure the dirt is off (since it blends in so well) you will be well-familiar with this unique pattern of golden spots and it will be a comfortable marking that only Bavyth has.

Personality

Strong, brave, and passionate, your Bavyth is a remarkable beast. Of this, you are certain. From the moment he hatched he was on a mission to get to you and though it was a difficult trek across the sands he found a path. Even when that other candidate tried to redirect him, Bavyth was not afraid to push him aside. From the moment of impression, the first thoughts after overwhelming love and adoration were that Bavyth would have preferred to die than to take anyone other than you, St'fan, and you believe him.

12.jpg

This is no flighty, vapid, air-headed dragon. Bavyth is a complex being with a certainty about his decisions and a resourcefulness that borders on ridiculous at times. Bavyth isn't afraid to find solutions to his problems. If he's not allowed to fly yet he will just use his strong talons and forearms to power his way to a higher ledge by climbing. If there's a hidden pool in a cave, your dragon will claw and pull at the rocks and dirt to widen the opening enough to squeeze through and get into that water.

13.gif

He's determined and doesn't give up until he's exhausted all possible approaches to a problem. He will keep pushing you and needling you until you are operating at your full potential in whatever task he deems important. « But did you try everything? Every idea? Surely there's something you haven't thought of. Let's go over it again. »

Some might say his resourcefulness is truly rooted in stubbornness. Your brown is incredibly stubborn about things and it can be downright infuriating, really. He refuses to give up to the point of frustration and it will be a hard battle of wills at times to convince Bavyth (who is so very sure that he is right) of the correct course of action. You're the voice of reason to remind him that things don't need to be quite that hard.

14.jpg

There's an easier way, Bav…

You will implore him to stop and take a break after five solid hours of flying.

« Don't need to. »

It's not that the break is absolutely necessary, it's that not every task needs to be pushed to the absolute limit.

« But I can do it. »

No one is arguing that. It's okay to stop.

« There's no reason to stop! »

It's going to wear you down, having these battles with Bavyth, but he's going to insist that it's making you stronger, both mentally and physically and strength is critical for leaders. Bavyth is sure you're leadership material, St'fan and your stubborn brown has a need to always be right. It's obnoxious when he's young — he's just so sure he's right and will try and prove everything even if it ends in disaster. This trait will season with age into a more tempered willpower, but he will still dig those massive talons in and refuse to budge because he's just so sure that he's right.

15.jpg

"People often say that Scorpio-born are fierce, probably because they understand very well the rules of the universe.” I like that, about understanding the rules of the universe - ~Francis

None of this, however, means that Bavyth is just a stubborn, thick-headed lout. Your brown is terribly brave and is a fierce ally for his wingmates. He seems to hold a natural understanding of the rules of the universe and this serves him well. He sees the bigger picture of things — a talent that many dragons truly lack — and uses this ability to guide and lead others. He doesn't hold back for personal motivations and will give his all wherever it serves the greater good in the wing and he can see that.

If a blue or green is flagging, he will automatically adjust his position in front of them to cut the wind for them. If more thread is getting through because the bronzes are busy cutting a swath through a thick patch, Bavyth understands to let some smaller clumps by because his flame can mop more up of the Bronze's leavings. He's a natural leader, unrelenting and able to fly a full fall. This only enhances his experience though it can be exhausting to you when he still wants to do sweeps after fall is done.

It's okay to rest, Bavyth!

He won't though, not until all the thread is gone. Bavyth is a hunter, at his core. Everything he does is with the passion and steadfast devotion of a hunter. Thread hunts organic life to destroy, but Bavyth hunts the thread. He does this with a zeal that's almost fanatical, even when compared to other dragons. This is his purpose. This is everything. The rest? The stubbornness, the need to be right, the constant pushing of the limits? It is all to support this need to always hunt thread until it's completely eradicated. This endless hunt will not end until the thread does.

Bavyth is not without other feelings. Because others rarely strive to the edge of reason with everything they do as he does, Bavyth can often be distrusting. How can you trust someone that doesn't give 110%? And how he can be jealous when he thinks his hard work and dedication has been passed over. « That bronze spends half the day sunning! How is he leading a wing?? If I led the wing I know there would have been half as much thread spilled through to the lower wings! They're not pushing themselves hard enough! How do we know he's truly qualified to lead? » Sometimes Bavyth needs you to remind him of that bigger picture part of teamwork and camaraderie in the early days.

16.jpg

Everything is a secret, even when it's not. Bavyth delights in secrets and you're his most trusted confidant. Especially when he's a hatchling he will tell you a million 'secrets'.

« Want to hear a secret? Zynth is very fast. »
Not so much a secret, Bav.
« Hajath likes herdbeast the best. »
« Dirt becomes mud when it's wet. »
« I had a dream about my egg being under the sea. »
« Oriecorth says I am not as weak as the others. »

Over time these thoughts will mature into true matters of confidence. Watch out though if you tell anyone about them. Bavyth will be gravely offended if you spill any of his secrets. And it's ironic, really, that a dragon that is so distrusting and secretive about some things can hold absolute disdain for others that are dishonest or gossips. « Secrets are not the same as lying. Gossip is simply revealing secrets. » He's not completely rigid about this, but he does have a lot of distrust for those that don't respect secrecy and honesty about things.

Perhaps his largest pet peeve, though, is the lazy. Anyone that is passive, lacks ambition, or doesn't strive to push themselves … Bavyth just doesn't like them as much. He will try to encourage them to change their ways, but if there is no progress he will move his attentions elsewhere.

"So Apollo and Gaia talked and decided that it was time for Orion to go, so Gaia created a giant scorpion to hunt the hunter. This is where Scorpio mythology essentially begins and ends. Orion pretty much knew he was screwed, so he ran, and Scorpio chased him." http://www.gods-and-monsters.com/scorpio-mythology.html

This bit of the mythology really resonated with me. I wanted this concept of forever hunting to be the backbone of Bavyth's personality. Despite all his perks and quirks, at his core the brown is always pushing and striving and never giving up. Also, since it's pretty much the entirety of the mythology for the constellation, it seemed fitting to work everything around it.

"Unrelated to Greek mythology, these symbols immediately bring to mind the Mexican coat of arms, which depict an eagle devouring a snake, perched upon a cactus. This was the symbol that signified where the founding of Tenochtitlan would be. It is interesting also that if you consider the eagle devouring the snake as Scorpio devouring Scorpio, this coincides well with the fact that a scorpion, when cornered with no means of escape, will sting itself to death." http://www.gods-and-monsters.com/scorpio-mythology.html

I really liked this concept of self-sacrifice over defeat, so when Bavyth was on the hatching grounds, I knew I wanted him to be certain that St'fan was the only candidate for him and he was prepared to go between if he had to had he not impressed with him.

One of the Water Signs

Scorpio is a water sign and that tied very nicely with the underwater egg that we picked for you. I worked water into his concept a lot because it fit so well with all the traits of a Scorpio (which, you know, makes sense). This all allowed for a dynamic dragon with a nice blend of strengths and flaws and I hope you'll find it all helpful to really tell Bavyth and St'fan's story in the Turns to come.

Name Inspiration

You were looking for something easy to pronounce, simple, but using less common letters for dragons. The least used letters are B V K Q J X Z (according to T'zaim), so we wanted to get some of those into the name. We looked at the Javanese people of Indonesia for inspiration. They call the Scorpius constellation Banyakangrem ("the brooded swan"), or Kalapa Doyong ("leaning coconut tree"). Both names are rich with unique letters and sounds, thus, Bavyth was born.

  • Dean says "bav-ith"
  • T'zaim says it as "BAV-ith"
  • Francis: BA-vith (short a)
