Toxic Soup Egg

Olive floods through blackened dusk, mottled by Rukbat's highlights. Submerged in its depths are foundations of russet and bittersweet, left to their own whim as they're otherwise abounded by the rush of their contrast. The saturation of color fades along the topside, trading permeable surface for arid soil.

Hatching Message:

Toxic Soup Egg seems to still, as if the life within had finally been drawn down into the muck and mire. Then, almost when all hope is lost, a ripple passes along the surface of the murky shell. Frantic tapping echoes from below, followed by a resounding 'crunch' as a pale, rain-washed foot finally finds its way free. Tiny toes wiggle slightly as the egg begins to tip sideways, balancing precariously before finally falling over to land with a harsh bump. The remaining shell splits right down the middle, revealing an angled, storm-wracked hatchling.

Calm After the Storm Blue Dragonet

Fog softens a storm-wracked hide, hazy grey wisping over the darkling blue of misaligned headknobs and jagged neckridges; heather steals along rain-washed limbs, ghosting over inelegant angles and bruise-black joints. From narrow, twisted shoulders grow ragged pinions, wingsails of pale, pearlescent azure caught 'tween night-dark spars — battered, but not broken. Wings' spread adds color to the gaunt frame and lean haunches, swept back into the cloud-occluded blue of a whipcord tail.

Impression Message:

Calm After the Storm Blue Dragonet swishes his tail as he walks past a pair of candidates without paying them much heed, stopping only when something draws his attention. His head lifts, nose twitching as if catching some distant scent on the warm air of the hatching sands. He takes one step in the direction of the smell, and only then notices the remaining piece of eggshell still attached to his ankle. Curling his head around towards his flanks, the blue gives his rear leg a shake, sending the russet shard towards a boy with mouse-brown hair. Curiously, the dragon moves towards him, head tilted as he looks down at the shell, then up into Mercutio's green eyes. His grayed nose reaches out to nudge the boy's hand, claiming this one as his own.

Personal Impression Message:

A slick of icy cold drips down your spine, but it soon fades with the warmth of the sands. Then a distant buzz sounds in your ears, the volume increasing as it draws nearer. There is a beat of pure silence, then a pop. « Hello, M'erc. » A presense echos into your mind, softening slightly as it finds a comfortable place within your heart. « Hydasnth here. You'll be my brother, right? What do you say we get off this hot stuff and find out what smells so good. I haven't eaten in… well, forever. »

~*~ INSPIRATIONS ~*~

Name Inspiration:

The name 'Hydasnth' was formed by combining three Egyptian hieroglyphics. 'Hyt' and 'da' are transliterations of the symbols for 'rain' and 'storm'. We removed the 't' for easier pronunciation and to make the name flow better. 'Sn' is the character for 'brother', which we chose to represent your dragon becoming a lifelong companion and friend. So, we drew these things together to create your 'storm brother' - Hydasnth. His name is fairly simple and could be pronounced as: Hi-da-sinth.

An example of what your dragon's name might look like in hieroglyphics can be found here:

Egg Inspiration:

The description of this egg was chosen for the disaster that was witnessed first hand down in New Orleans in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina ravished the city to pieces. The flood waters were unbelievable as they were being pumped from the depths of the city and back into Lake Pontchartrain over the unbreached levies, and each day that we drove by on our way to the coast guard station, they changed color, but mostly just shades of green and brown.

Description Inspiration:

For there to be rebirth, rebuilding, there has to have been destruction; Hydasnth reflects that, in the jagged, ragged way he's put together. Oh, everything works, and does it quite well, but there's a bit of an edginess to him, a sort of storm-tossed quality. He's the calm after the storm, too — soft fog and clouds that sort of obscure some of the worst of the storm damage, soften all of those ragged points to something that may not be /beautiful/, but at least has a certain power to it.

Mind Voice:

Hold on to your hat, M'erc. It's going to be a bumpy ride. If you bottled a tornado, added some warm summer rains and injected a good dose of A.D.D., you would get a glimpse into how Hydasnth's mind works. Luckily, you'll only get a small taste of this, though it may seem like more. It is not so much that he lacks control, but that he wants to share everything with you. And we do mean everything. What he's thinking, what he's feeling, what he has seen and heard, what he thinks he can or cannot do. Sometimes it might come in one long rush, sometimes it might be a solitary burst of thought after hours of silence. In time, Hydasnth will learn a bit better when to « speak » and when to stay on the down low, but during those first few months you might find it difficult to keep his thoughts from drowning out your own.

Hydasnth is no slouch when it comes to intellect, but it might be hard to see it sometimes for those who will not know him as well. The brightest child in the world will still drive his teachers insane if he can't keep his thoughts to himself, so be prepared to get called out a bit more often than the others during weyrlinghood. « Izlasth, look at what I can do with my wings. Did you see that? Izlasth, do you know what Sunevoth's couch looks like? His is bigger, but I like mine better because… » You can probably see where this might cause difficulties. Don't worry too much; this is just a phase. Do, however, try to teach Hydasnth along the way which times are appropriate and which are not, and perhaps just how much should or should not be shared.

When he's an adult, this spastic, precocious child stage will fade, leaving in its place a bright adult dragon with a wicked good sense of humor. The constant buzz of thought will become less common as he begins to learn that he doesn't /need/ to share every little thing with you, though sometimes he just won't be able to help it. *pop in* « M'erc, when I was swimming, I saw three dolphins, and they waved to me. I want to learn how to use the currents like they do. » *pop out* That could be hours earlier, or just the moment before. If he feels you really need to know or if he just can't keep it to himself, he's going to share it with you no matter the timing.

When he speaks, he will not be limited to mere words. Few people can share their thoughts only via text and still express their full meaning; tone and context can make all the difference in the world. This will hold true for Hydasnth, and then some. Most often, his thoughts will contain a hint of the whirlwind in his head, a buzzing hum just around the edges, a rush of wind, or bounces and skips he is unable to hold back. His pleasant baritone could vary from one moment to the next. When relaxed and calm, his is the sort of voice you could listen to for hours. When he gets excited, the words will rush by, loud and vibrant. If sad, it might turn into a low, straggling rumble.

Throughout all of this will be the feeling of running water, sometimes warm and soft, sometimes icy and biting. When it's just the two of you, it will most often feel like a warm, summer rain: exactly at body temperature so it almost feels like there is nothing there, but with just enough pressure against your skin to tell you otherwise — like an evening rain after a blistering summer day, refreshing, comforting, satisfying. Such will be Hydasnth's touch in your mind.

Usually.

Keep in mind what happens when you mix water with high winds. The sting against your face, the roar in your ears. Luckily, no storm lasts forever; your new relationship with Hydasnth will.

Physicalities:

Physically, Hydasnth will always be lean — where some weyrling dragons might fill out once they reach adulthood, he never will. That isn't to say that he'll be weak, or in any way behind his peers; ragged though his wings may look, they are still swift and sure and /strong/. He'll always give you a little bit of a stomach-twist to look at, all those harsh angles and roughed up joints, but they tie together into one sturdy package — he's already weatherd one storm, and remained whole. He'll continue to do so, as well. His joints might give you trouble — where the skin is darker, where it looks like he's battered himself against something, will tend towards needing more oiling, or his elbows and knees and wing-joints will get flaky and itchy and uncomfortable — this, especially when he is growing.

Personality:

Genie: Oh, Al. I'm gettin' kinda fond of you, kid.
Not that I wanna pick out curtains or anything.

Genie: No matter what anybody says, you'll always be
a prince to me.

The theme of this clutch was 'Rebirth, Rebuilding, and Reconstruction'. Hydasnth is the type of dragon who will focus on building your future, incorporating your dreams to help you be the best you can be. In the best of times and the worst of times, Hydasnth will always be a friend at heart. He's more than willing to put aside his own needs to make things better for you. He will find his greatest joy in supporting you in the things that make you happiest in life. While he may often be an energetic dragon, Hydasnth will easily concentrate those energies into the things that matter most to the both of you. He'll be a patient learner and will calm himself if needed to help you with more serious tasks such as your interest in dragon-healing.

[Genie realizes that Jafar has stolen the lamp]
[Genie looks at a script]
Genie: Tonight, the part of Al will be played by a tall,
dark and sinister, ugly man.

Genie: Once again, this whole broadcast has been brought
to you by Sand - it's everywhere, get used to it.

Hydasnth is a dragon who believes in seeing things for what they are. This can make him a bit literal-minded, but it also becomes an important part of his humorous nature. He takes quite a bit of pride in his sense of humor, even if others may find it a bit eccentric or lame at times. If a joke, pun, or amusing observation can bring a smile to someone's face, he's the right dragon for the job. Most of all, he'll apply his humor towards you, doing his best to lift your spirits whenever they might wane. He'll always be there with a nudge of the shoulder and an amusing quip to support those who matter most to him. It is this need to be of help to others that will show the true strength of his heart. When times are at their darkest, he will be an ear to listen, a shoulder to lean on, and a kind word to help push through.

Aladdin: Let's see, three wishes. I want them to be good…
what would you wish for?
Genie: Me? No one's ever asked me that before. Well, in
my case… no, forget it.
Aladdin: What?
Genie: (sigh) Freedom.

Genie: But oh, to be free. Not to have to go
"Poof! Whaddaya need," "Poof! Whaddaya need,"
"Poof! Whaddaya need?". To be my own master.
Such a thing would be greater than all the magic
and all the treasures in all the world.

Free-spirited, Hydasnth is not a dragon to be bound to great responsibilities. He enjoys his freedom to explore, create, and learn without being under a master's watchful eye. This doesn't mean he'll shirk any duties, but when the day is through, he leaves his work at work. While some dragons may tend towards great ambitions, Hydasnth's only ambition is to get to the end of a task so he can be free to do as he wishes, or at least as you wish.

It is this foot-loose attitude that will probably lend him to being one of the most enthusiastic fliers in his weyrling class. He'll take every opportunity he can to take to the skies, where he feels most free. You may have some trouble reining in his need for such frivolous activities, especially when he's young and excited to get out into the great big world. You'll have to keep a close eye on him to ensure that he doesn't attempt flight maneuvers too early, landing him with a dragon-healer and you in a mess of trouble.

Genie: (as a tailor) First, that fez-and-vest combo is
much too third-century. These patches. What are
we trying to say? Beggar? No. Work with me here.

There is an artistic quality to Hydasnth, at least when it comes to colors. His riding straps will have to be the -precise- shade to properly match his hide, and Faranth forbid if you combine the wrong tunic and pants combination. Unlike some dragons, Hydasnth isn't vain about his appearances; he just believes that some colors go better together than others. Don't be surprised if he comments on the attire of other riders and their dragons. This will be especially hard for him during your time as a weyrling, when there is little choice in what clothes a young rider wears. Even so, he'll do his best to make sure you look dashingly handsome, at least in his eyes.

Aladdin: Princess Jasmine, you're very…
Genie: Wonderful! Magnificent! Glorious!… Punctual!
Aladdin: Punctual!
Jasmine: Punctual?
Genie: Sorry.
Aladdin: Uh… uh… beautiful!
Genie: Nice recovery.

Genie: Enough about you, Casanova. Talk about her.
Is she smart, fun? The hair, the eyes. Anything.
Pick a feature.

Love is an area that Hydasnth believes himself to be an expert. He'll be more than happy to dole out love advice and encourage you to come out of your shell to speak to that guy or girl that you have an eye on. All it takes is the right words, and Hydasnth thinks that he has them all. Of course, sometimes he gets a little bit ahead of himself and that's when you'll have to sort through his nonsense if you don't want to end up saying the wrong thing.

Flights:

Genie: You're not gonna find another girl like her in a
million years. Believe me, I know. I've looked.

Hydasnth's romantic nature certainly doesn't end with just giving you love advice. He tries to apply it to his own love life, with varying degrees of success. When he senses a green about to rise, he'll lavish her in compliments, sometimes going so far as to write little poetic quips about the joys of love in flight. He isn't cocky or boastful; he simply does his best to convince the ladies of the convictions of his heart.

In flight, however, Hydasnth's flowery words are put aside in favor of more seductive tactics. As quick as he may be, he doesn't rush into things, preferring to take his time and find just the right moment to pull the lady into his embrace. This isn't always the wisest of tactics with some of the faster greens, but if he does not succeed in catching his prize, Hydasnth simply sees a failed attempt as something not meant to be. However, if he does win the flight, he'll be quite attentive to his mate for as long as she'll allow his advances.
