Esirael? No, no, you are Esirael no longer! You are now S’rael, of the Igen tribe! We hope your Wovocyth is everything you dreamed of and more! With his free spirit and his protective, mustang heart, Wovocyth is a proud warrior and we hope he brings you that sense of duty and home you were looking for..

Life After Egg

From a distance, the egg looks like an intricate jigsaw of green and blue, speckled here and there with vibrant reds, jewelled violets, and impossible yellows. Upon closer inspection, the craggy bedrock of sandstone, mottled granite and chipped obsidian hide beneath that layer of life, stubbornly holding on, though it can't possibly win when the time comes.

Egg Inspiration

dystopia.jpg

I've always been a big fan of the post-apocalyptic genre, which is what drew me to Pern, aside from the obvious (dragons). Not that Pern is necessarily post-apocalyptic, but it's in there somewhere. When I first heard of the series "Life after People", I was intrigued, and while some of it I don't really buy (seriously iffy science here and there), the imagery is fabulous. And what's more to theme than Mother Nature reasserting her dominance over the planet? There's also a teeny tiny bit of Bette Midler in there. 'Cause.

Egg Touching Poses and Responses

The Touch

When Esirael's hand breaks from the egg, or rather slowly slides off of it, he looks surprisingly dejected. As if he had once been mentally transported somewhere fascinating that he wanted to be, and then yanked right back out of it. It wasn't really so abrupt, but … in some ways. There's definitely a change to the way he's standing and contemplating the eggs. "Wasn't quite mind control," he says, as if that won't encourage them to try harder. Those unhatched, barely-formed dragonets. He has to find another one, and that isn't as hard, considering he had actually chosen a few favorites: finding no one else near it, he moves to Life After Egg.

The Response

This egg gives off a feeling of endless, boring eternity, drops you in a rocky, barren place with little to no life, yet, Riotous greens, yellows, blues and violets cling to rocky surfaces around. Lichen, a slow, eternal life form if left to it’s own devices. Wind twists what few trees that cling to life here into twisted, tiny things, barely rooted in the rock walls. And as eternal as the place is, as peaceful and quiet, saving the howling of the wind, it’s time to come back, to where life can mostly thrive. Deserts aren’t much better! (To Esirael )

Hatching Message

Life After Egg is finally complete! The last piece of the puzzle has been put into place and the final picture is ready for revealing. Bedrock breaks and granite cracks, obsidian chips falling to the sands like a glimmering black waterfall. From the dark depths within an equiline snout appears first, pushing it’s way past the walls of it’s colorful prison and determinedly breaking free. Stallion of the Telgar Steppe Bronze Dragonet steps onto the sands!

Wandering Pose

Stallion of the Telgar Steppe Bronze Dragonet is free! Shaking from snout to tail he throws off the remnants of his shell and gives parchment wings a wide stretch. Ahhhhh, that feels so good!! Lifting elongated muzzle to the air for a testing sniff he gauges his surroundings with a critical eye. Excitement bubbles in his veins and erupts in a triumphant bugle. All that sand! All that space! His spirit aches to gallop and soar across that vast openness! But wait, there’s something he must do first. Something.. No, someone that he must find. Metal’s gleam reflects the light as his headknobs twitch like a runner’s ears, curiosity brimming as his attention turns to those white-robed things standing all over the place. Which one is his? Let’s see! Trundling forward he goes for a closer look.

Dragonet Desc

agedbronze.jpg beads.jpg copper_coins1.jpg pendant.jpg

The free spirit of the plains has come to Igen, embodied by the wild courage of a stallion in dragonet form. Dark, aged bronze shimmies and shivers across a hide that appears dipped in the sun itself with a shiny, metallic gloss. Rich turquoise highlights whisper around the sleek shape of muscle and bone while antique copper lurks in the shadows, deepening the definition of a lithe, elongated frame that promises aerodynamic perfection to come. Smooth grace flows in extended limbs and large paws, especially the whipcord length of an agile, elegant tail. Shades of copper melt with reddish highlights as they approach the tip of that extensive tail, nature’s nod to paternal heritage. The proud profile of an equine visage is his, snout drawn out and darkening to a polished tip of black tourmaline and expressive headknobs that flicker and twitch with velvety ease. A rich maternal legacy has left it’s mark on him as well as deepening ink stains counter the parchment fade of strong wings, a whimsical scribbled pattern leaving a dark script gilded along spars.

Public Impression Pose

Stallion of the Telgar Steppe Bronze Dragonet pauses to grind one large paw into the sand, leaving a good-sized divot behind. A sense of deep contemplation sweeps through his frame, black-tipped muzzle dipping briefly before tossing back again and the twitch of his long tail nearly tripping a nearby blond boy. Like the far off rumble of an incoming storm across a wide plain, carried on strong winds and the wings of a bird, confidence blooms in the bronze’s beating heart. There! There he is! With a surprisingly gentle assurance Stallion of the Telgar Steppe Bronze Dragonet steps in front of a dark-haired youth and nudges the boy’s palm with the rounded end of his snout.

Private Impression Message

Misty-Horse_art.jpg

The thundering of hooves rattles in the recesses of your mind as a fair wind sweeps you into plains much like the Telgar Steppe, the sky stretches in an endless red and orange sunset, grass waving in the wind, and the cry of a hunting avian echoes across the land. The rich smell of dirt and prairie reaches your nostrils as a buckskin male raises his head in your direction. Ears flick as a snort sends fog issuing from his nostrils, a hoof stamping at the ground. Yes. He sees you. There’s a pregnant pause as he figures out if you are friend or foe. He walks to you, joining up before his velvet soft nose dips into the cup of your hand. Without, you find yourself face to face with a bronze. « S’rael, brother, at long last the great mystery of life has brought our paths together! A great spirit resides in you. It calls to me. I am Wovocyth. Come brother, let us find grazing pastures and sustenance. »

Clutch Theme Inspiration/Dragonet Tie-In

buckskin2.jpg

The clutch theme was nature, and really, what’s a better example of nature than a wild Mustang stallion protecting his herd and his land? Mustangs are a symbol of fire, an embodiment of wild nature and what it means to be free, yet home.

- According to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), the English word "mustang" comes from two essentially synonymous Spanish words, mestengo (or mesteño) and mostrenco. Both words referred to horses and cattle defined as "wild, having no master."

Description Inspiration

Wovocyth’s description was very much inspired by the wild stallions of the plains. Their free spirit and courage truly comes through in his strong, metallic-brushed hide and individual equine features. You asked for a long snout, for example, and he has one! You asked for shiny, and he is! As opposed to the ugly duckling you wanted to avoid, your Wovocyth is beautiful, but not too pretty. His features are functional and aerodynamic, as you preferred. We gave him large paws and an especially long tail, two other quirks that might make him stand out. You will certainly be able to have fun with the oddities in his shape until he either grows into them or simply gets used to using them.

One aspect of his description we thought you would particularly like are the nods to his heritage. That was a great suggestion and we were happy to oblige! It really gives your bronze a unique connection to his past. You will see the reddish-copper of his sire, Abraxath, in his tail. And you will see the ink black coloring and parchment that are so dear to his dam, Rhiscorath, in his wings, including some of the dark script of her design echoed across his spars. We very much imagine that to look like the mysterious pattern seen in the opening image above.

Lastly, the stallion was a perfect fit for you, S’rae, because you long for a home and a sense of duty. The majestic leader of the herd watches over every member with a protective fervor. They are truly a tight-knit family group. And that is what your bond with Wovocyth will be like. Nothing can come between the two of you or ever mar the close-knot bond that you share. You will never feel alone again! Your lifemate is very serious about his duties and will inspire you to heights you may not have ever thought possible.

Name Inspiration

Wovocyth, say it with me, woah-voh-sith, it's a little more than one syllable longer, but look! We managed not to get any of those pesky letters you asked us not to use! It was a challenge, but it was a fun one!

When reading your application and questionnaire, you emphasised a need for a dragon that drove the feeling of belonging home and that instilled a sense of duty and honor, well, that sense of duty and honor is very present in your bronze’s name. Wovocyth, a mix of the Lakota/Dakota words Wovoka and Naca Omniciye, whose meanings you can find below. Basically they are the words for a man who asked the spirits to protect them and the councils that decided what was best for the tribe. Protector and Leader, which is what Bronzes are expected to be.

Paiute.jpg

WOVOKA: A Paiute man credited with having a vision of a dance called the “Ghost Dance” that would protect the people. The “Ghost Dance” was a pan-tribal religious movement which promised to protect the people from the destitute conditions they suffered in 1889. The followers of Wovoka believed that they would be returned to older traditions and values if they participated in the dance.

council.jpg

NACA OMNIClYE: The term given to the group which is composed of headmen, warriors, hunters, and shaman who served as the “tribal council.” These individuals of each tiospaye came together to govern the activities of the group.

Mindvoice

jack.jpg

“You do what’s best for your family, even if it’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done”
~ Jack Bartlett

Being a wild spirit of the plains, the first thing that leapt to our minds when it came to your Wovocyth’s voice was a cowboy - someone who would reflect the rugged freeness of those wide open spaces. Jack Bartlett jumped out at us as a perfect fit! He is a character on the TV show Heartland and has a wonderfully soulful voice that is rich and deep, like velvet over stones, with a sexy country burr that makes you just wanna swoon on the spot. And - you’ll love this - he can sing! Here is a beautiful sample from the show:

So close your eyes and listen to his voice while imagining rolling plains of high grasses and an eagle flying high against a stark, indian summer sky. A herd of gorgeous wild horses grazes below with a proud, buck-skinned stallion watching over them all. That fabulous image is what your Wovocyth’s mindvoice encompasses.

buckskin.jpg eagle.jpg herd.jpg INDIAN_SUMMER_II.jpg prairie.jpg

Wovoycth sees himself as that stallion, fiercely protective of his herd. Right now that herd consists of just you but someday when he is able to sire a clutch he will be a very attentive and involved partner, chest-busting proud of his progeny. Just like that stallion, he will whicker when happy, snort when annoyed, and stomp when agitated. Defensive aggression will bring out a fierce protectiveness in him as in the case of competition with another stallion (or other dragons in flights) and dangerous wolves (voracious thread). His scape will vary from vast prairies, to soulful mountain ranges, to meadows and streams, but always, Wovocyth's stallion and his herd are present.

Personal space. You used to have it. Now? Forget it! Wovocyth might be newly hatched but he’s already thinking like a parent when it comes to you. Personal boundaries don’t exist. He’ll poke. He’ll prod. He’ll pry until he’s sure he isn’t missing anything. You will need to work with him on setting guidelines and having at least a minimal amount of privacy - for your own sanity as well as avoiding any embarrassing revelations Wov might blurt out at the wrong moment.

« But S’rael, you DO think Maeveth’s rider has a well shaped butt. Should I not have mentioned it? »

Unfortunately this lack of awareness extends beyond the bond between you and your bronze. He genuinely doesn’t understand that anything he is capable of perceiving doesn’t include him. Wov’s curiosity will lead him to eavesdrop when he shouldn’t and he won’t hesitate to insert a comment if he feels like it, often in the form of a humor or sarcasm. You might have to do a bit of mediation on occasion to smooth over situations into which your bronze has gotten himself. On the other hand, a good result of such freedom of speech on the part of your bronze is that his voice is expansive and unhindered in a way that most dragons shy away from - he will include others if they are at all open to it, sometimes when they aren’t even aware that they are. Particularly if you are close to someone his innate inclination to include them in your family herd will lead him to reach out to them.

Physicalities

Wovocyth has many unique features that you’re going to love and we hope they will give you many fun scenes with your fabulous bronze! His equine-esque aspects include a long snout with distinctive nose, headknobs that resemble velvety ears, and long, graceful limbs. He has a couple of fun quirks in his big paws and an extra long tail that will probably trip him up as a young dragon. Time will tell whether he grows into them or just gets used to them. He will be a bit self-conscious about them at first, especially if they cause a problem, so you’ll have to reassure him with nothing but loving support. His long but thin frame has plenty of tone muscle to give him the fine aerodynamics you wanted and he will be a force to be reckoned with in flights! This more than anything will make him especially joyful in the air as the vast openness of it calls to his innate abilities and lets his inner stallion soar with utter freedom across the sky. At those times you will want to make sure your straps are secured tight!

On the ground your statuesque bronze will lope like a runner once he gets moving, those long lines and powerful limbs giving him an extra dose of grace. Occasionally he might stumble over something though, including his own big feet, but he has a determined spirit and won’t let it get him down for long. That tail of his might also get in the way occasionally by knocking things over unexpectedly or tripping someone else. Poor Wov will feel really bad when that happens so you’ll have to do a good job of cheering him up.

With the crossed genes of Nowtimer and Oldtimer parents your Wovocyth will be slightly on the larger end of the scale when it comes to his fellow bronzes. Not the biggest by far and not the most muscular either, but his bones are well crafted and serve him well with a frame that supports his love of lengthy flights.

Let’s talk about those wings of his! They are uniquely beautiful, to say the least. With that ink black hue that seems to soak in the light the mysterious pattern of squiggly script that underscores his hide is even more noticeable. It flows along his spars until both it and the darker coloring fade into the delicate paleness of parchment. Truly they mark him as a son of book-loving Rhiscorath.

Dragon Scent

sage.jpg pine.jpg creek.jpg sunbaked.jpg

Whenever your mind turns to the bond with your lifemate distinct scents will drift across your inner senses. Sage is there nearly always as the Native Americans and many other cultures use it to ward off bad energy or spirits. It will mingle with the musky smell of horseflesh most of the time and become his signature of his contact. Other scents will slip into the mix depending on his mood, their strength depending on the depth of his emotions. When he is curious the sharp scent of pine will appear. The sweet crispness of clear creek water will soften his scent when he’s concentrating and the heat of sun-baked earth will singe your nose hairs when he is angry or upset. These clues will help you understand your bronze better no matter what he says - or especially if he says nothing at all!

Personality

brothers.jpg

As a young dragon, Wovocyth will be very coltish in his demeanor, eager to learn the ways of the world while being wild and free within it. It will have to be you, S’rael, that teaches him how to tame that wildness when it comes to business. That same wildness however will lend Wovocyth great drive and determination to learn what he has to learn. Like wild stallions he’ll have a stubborn streak, but in your case, that stubborn streak goes for the side of good rather than bad habits and bullheadedness. When trying to learn something new, he’ll be very much like a frustrated runner, weaving back and forth, pawing at the ground, snorting. He’ll also be like this in play, feigning a charge and then bolting away like a skittish colt.

As he grows, you’ll find that it’s not just learning about the world that Wovocyth will take an interest in. The second he discovers books, S’rael, you’re in for it. History and folklore will eat up most of his taste in literature, he’ll collect these hides and tomes. However, if you read him any particularly good poetry, he may insist on eating it as a snack. Didn’t you know that’s the quickest way to store information?

When drills start, this is when you’ll see a shift in Wovocyth’s coltish behavior. He will seem to mature almost overnight. This is what he was built for, meant for. Your Wovocyth, like Native braves of the past, is a warrior stallion at heart, a wild war steed. He’s quite serious about his job.

« The ground on which we stand is sacred ground. It is the blood of our ancestors, it must be protected, and we to do the protecting, brother. »

However, we’ll get to that in the thread section. This sudden jolt into maturity also comes with a healthy dose of paternal and brotherly instinct, particularly where you are concerned S’rae. He will constantly be trying to help you better yourself, to soar to higher and grander places like the avians above. Once you graduate, besides the drive to breed and procreate, he’ll want to be the best you both can be!

« S’rael, brother, I heard from many that the wingleader position is about to be open, we should put our names in for the draw! I know we’d be good at it! »

However, your burly bronze is not all business all the time! Oh no! The stallion spirit within Wovocyth loves to soar in the skies or lope the Telgar Steppe with reckless abandon. Though not so reckless as to endanger you S’rael, oh no, beyond fighting thread your Stallion of the Telgar Steppe won’t allow you to do anything he perceives as too dangerous.

Amongst this need to fly or roam free, is an odd need to run with runners, any time he sees them (saving thread), and a need to collect colts, he’ll want to borrow and coddle the fuzzy lanky little things until he forced to give them back. You may end up with a stable of runners to care for on top of your equine bronze, because he loves runners, thinks of them, and you, as herd. To be protected.

“Have you seen my buckskin colt? He was in with the other runners this morning, and then poof.

“No, I haven’t, sorry.”

“Darn it, must have been that Wovocyth again, that bronze has the darndest thing for baby runners.”

Baby-horse.jpg

However, runners aren’t the only babies this Bronze loves. He loves all babies and will try to parent anything that he can, including weyrlings not his own. He loves loves loves babies. This might just be tied with his incessant need to breed, to procreate, to litter Pern with his offspring.

Thread

grey-art-2.jpg

Because of his equine shape, Wovocyth will be a bit more lithe and flexible in the air than his bronze clutchmates. And so, he will approach thread with the mindset of a war horse, his entire purpose to flame that ancient silver ribbon from the skies. However, he will also know when to bow out of the fight, if injured or if you, S’rael, are in any kind of mortal danger. Wovocyth doesn’t like the idea of you getting injured. Not. One. Bit.

And when flying thread, that protectiveness extends to those of his wing, under his coverage area and those you care about deeply. He must protect his herd! And because of this he has an insatiable bloodlust for thread, an ancient calling to destroy his enemy. And he will do so, skillfully.

That being said, your prideful stallion does not take failure or loss lightly, or well. His death keen is like a funeral march, deeply depressing and tear inducing. Losing a brother or sister in arms will weigh heavily on Wovocyth, driving him to do better next time, though until he forgets the loss it may be hard to raise his broken spirit.

Flights

Flights. They are a constant source of thought for your bronze. He was built and made for breeding! The prime example of perfection in his genetics. Do you know how far back this stallions lineage goes? Centuries. He should be put to stud! Really!!!

All joking aside though, Wovocyth’s Prime Objective is: Destroy Thread. Wovocyth’s Secondary Objective is: Breeding. He so desperately wants to be a sire to a clutch! He’ll chase every gold that takes to the skies no matter where he might be. And he’ll chase a green every once in awhile just to keep his form. You’ll probably hate this S’rael, but to Wovocyth the more mares in his herd the better!

He’ll take off fast and hard, determined to win and eager to twine tails. He’ll chase off other suitors like a stallion chases off rival stallions.

« That’s my gold, thank you. Out of the way. Coming through. »

When he does catch, he’ll be filled with wild pride and may need a victory lap or two afterwards to celebrate. He’ll be the most attentive clutch dad ever. He’ll guard those eggs with his life and more, and when the dragonets come, he’ll dote on them as any good father would.

When he loses, he’ll sulk for a few days and maybe chase a green to get into better shape for next time.
