Where Lake Shore, Igen Weyr

Lake Shore
Sprawled out beyond the Weyr proper's hustling activity and ambling roads, the cool, blue paradise of the Weyr lake promises escape from the oppressive hammer of Igen summer's cruel climes; the asymmetrical, sandy white shores hook delicately around the deceptively still waters running deep and sure, greedy peninsulas reaching white fingers stretching in crooked lines towards its center. A sturdy shack, weather-beaten and brown as cured leather, resides in isolated splendor upon one such finger, screened shelving offering a variety of brushes and fragrant oils housed in colorful tureens. Out beyond a small and dusty paddock ringed by a white fence, a long rocky pier stabs out into the lake, providing a panoramic view of the Weyr itself, while the southern shores provide varied shrubs and grassed for the massed herds in their pens.

The newfound warmth of spring in Igen means that more and more people - and dragons - can be seen to linger in the sun on the sandy shores of the Lake. Though by no means the only ones outside this afternoon, Kyara and Liareth do have a good stretch of shoreline to themselves. The green is lying on her stomach in the sand, not long from a bath, and Kyara is perched on her neck. Backwards. It's a bit of an odd sight, though it's clear that the greenrider is using the unconventional position to tend to her lifemate's hide as she dips into small pot of some sort of salve, leans forward (from her vantage) and proceeds to rub it into a spot between Liareth's wings. As it has been since weyrlinghood, so it remains - Liareth's hide is a little high-maintenance.

Zalara has had the good fortune to be out at the beach. She is dressed in a light dress with sandals. She has a sling over her shoulder in front of her. She walks down the beach close to the shoreline and she spots Kyara and Liareth. "Good afternoon to both of you."

Kyara almost doesn't hear the Smith apprentice from her several-foot-high vantage over Liareth's light trill of greeting. "Hi, Zalara!" the greenrider calls down with a warm grin, leaning over on her green's shoulder a bit to better see the girl. The sling Zalara carries is noted, though offhandedly; it's not clear what she might be carrying from this high up. She rubs at the salve she's just applied to one of Liareth's flare-ups a little more, raising her voice somewhat so that the girl can still hear her. "Liareth says hello, too; she just has to stay still right now. What brings you out here today? A little break from your duties?"

Zalara smiles and says louder so that Kyara can hear her. "I understand; I don't want to get in the way of you taking care of her. Yes; it was too nice a day and the boys were acting all fidgety so the Journeymen let them go after lunch. I stayed to put in some extra work and then came out here with Narcis." She reaches into the sling and pulls out a small brown firelizard. He yawns loudly and then stretches out as if to say “see me aren't I so beautiful?”

"Oh, you're not getting in the way, lass," is Kyara's chuckled reply as she replaces the lid on her pot and wipes her fingers on a rag that's been sitting draped over her shoulder. She slips easily down from Liareth's neck, straightening her shirt a bit as the new brown firelizard makes his not-so-subtle appearance. "Ahhh-hah!" she exclaims, eyebrows jumping upward. "Well, well! He's lovely, Zalara. When did you get him?" Kyara's queen and bronze suddenly blink into view not far overhead, wheeling happily over the new addition to Igen's fair and warbling welcome. Liareth moves her nose closer and lightly whuffles - both in a hello she can now give the Smith girl, and a careful greeting to the baby brown.

Zalara smiles. "Do you need any help then?" she asks as she moves a bit closer. She pets over Narcis' head. "His name is Narcis. He's rather full of himself, so I'll have to try to tame him of that, but he's rather sweet otherwise. I got him about ten days ago." She giggles as she's whuffled and Narcis is loving the attention as he moves around. His hide gleams as he's been freshly oiled not too long ago.

Now Blaze flits down to land on Kyara's shoulder, stretching as far as she can get away with down the greenrider's chest to get a better look at Narcis before Kyara shrugs her off in order to get back to work. "If he doesn't mind you moving all over the place, I'd love to have some help," she tells Zalara, digging another rag out of a pouch sitting nearby on the folded pile of Liareth's riding straps. "There isn't a lot left to do, but there's a lot to Liareth. Faranth, am I glad she's done growing!" The greenrider leads Zalara down toward Liareth's tail and points to a spot near her dragon's left haunch that's a little brighter than the rest of her hide - and a little rough looking. "If you can tend to that one, I'll get the other on her tail," Kyara says, holding the pot of salve out to the girl. Just get some on your fingers and rub it in. Just like oiling Narcis there, pretty much."

Zalara puts her brown firelizard on her shoulder and she gives him a pat. "Stay here." She looks over to Kyara. "He'll stay on if he doesn't want to get dropped in the water." The brown huffs at Zalara, but holds on as she moves around to Liareth’s tail. "All right, I can do that." She gets the salve on her fingers and she starts to rub it in small circles. "My mother has a blue firelizard, so I had her show me how it's done."

Chuckling as she observes the interaction between Zalara and her little brown, Kyara takes up some more salve of her own and smears it over a long patch of flared hide atop Liareth's tail, about halfway down. "Make sure you keep it just on that patch there, and nowhere else," she instructs the Smith girl. "This stuff has a special medicine in it, so it doesn't need to go everywhere. Her skin has always been like this. The first time it happened, when she was little and we were still in the weyrling barracks, she itched so badly that I felt it. Knocked me right out of bed!" She laughs a little; it wasn't funny at the time, but it's thinking about how she must have looked that makes it so now. "I haven't forgotten I said I'd take you flying, by the way," she says suddenly. "We will. It's just that…a lot happened between the last time I talked to you and now. Of course, now that you have him, we'll have to wait a little more, until you've got him trained a little better."

Zalara ohs. "I didn't realize that dragons got skin conditions," she says as she makes sure to keep the salve just on the rough parts. "I hope I'm making it feel better. Do you think she'll ever outgrow it?" she asks and she chuckles. "Wow! That must have been really bad to itch that much." She nods. "I know you haven't. I figured when you'd have the time you'd take me. Oh? What happened?" Zalara nods. "Yeah; I don't want to lose him."

Liareth hums happily, turning her head as much as she can to look at Zalara with blue eyes whirling, and Kyara grins. "She wants you to know you're helping very much," she tells the girl, "and I thank you, too. It's not that there was any rush, but it relieves her, when there're more than two hands working. And yes, skin conditions happen. Lia has hers, and a friend of mine has a blue dragon with tough hide. The dragonhealers say it just happens sometimes. Sort of like some people sunburn really easily, or have dry skin all the time." She shakes her head to Zalara's question of outgrowing. "Lia's done growing, so no - I don't think so. It's not as bad as it used to be, and we're used to dealing with it, now." As for the next question, Kyara blinks as she thinks of how best to answer. "Well, aside from having a lot of drills, Liareth…went through a change we both had to deal with. When something happens to her, it happens to me, so it took a little time to get through that. And then…I'm sure you heard all the dragons crying, when the Weyrwoman and her queen died." Kyara finishes her current spot, slowly shifting to the next as a sad expression crosses her face. "I had to help Lia deal with that, and it's been a very hard time for all of us who ride dragons. It's taken some time…but I think things are getting back to normal now." She gives Zalara a small smile again. "So soon, we should be able to take you flying."

Zalara smiles. "I'm glad that I'm able to help her. I didn't know that they did get skin conditions other than have itchy skin if they didn't get oiled enough. I was warned against letting his skin go dry. That it will crack and get very painful. I don't want to cause him pain." She smiles. "So are drills fun? Or is it just the same thing over and over again?" She nods. "I did hear, and I'm sorry. I hope they catch who did it. I might not have liked her decision about girls, but no one should be murdered."

"No. They shouldn't," Kyara says quietly, her headshake somber. Then she tilts her head a little in thought as she keeps working at the new patch, smirking as she looks over at the Smith girl. "I don't know if I'd call drills fun. They are sometimes, when things are going well. They're interesting. I'm in the Weyrleader's wing, and he's always having us try new things, so there's usually something new to think about." Liareth gives a rumble, and Kyara looks a little vague as she's told something, which she smiles at. "Lia thinks drills are fun more often than I do. But more than that, it's a good challenge that we both like, because it means we'll be better able to protect everyone when Thread starts falling."

Zalara continues to rub the salve in to the rough patch. "How does that feel?" she asks the dragon, and she nods to Kyara. "Sounds interesting! Better than just doing the same thing over and over again. That would be really boring." She laughs. "I bet, ‘cause she gets to do the flying and you just ride, right?" She nods. "I'm sure you will; all the practice will really get the wings ready for Thread."

Liareth gives a little hum again, and Kyara nods, handing her extra rag to Zalara. "She's says you've helped very much. It looks like you've got it pretty well; that should do!" With a grin, she wipes off her own hands, answering, "True enough, but we work together. I may not be doing the flying, but we see together. I remember things she can't. We rely on one another, and everyone else in our wing. It's…a pretty complex thing, trust me." With a sigh, she looks over at Zalara's firelizard again. "I'm glad you've got a little friend of your own now, Zalara. Let me know if you need any help with him at all." Slowly, she starts stashing her salve and rags back into the nearby pouch.

Zalara nods as she goes one last little spot with the salve before she looks it all over. "It sounds really complex." She washes off her hands before she dries them. She reaches up to pet Narcis and hugs the brown firelizard to her. He loves the attention and butts at her hand so she'll pet him. "Me too. None of the other apprentices in my class have one."

Taking up the riding straps now, Kyara goes about putting them around Liareth's neck, tightening them automatically with a Turn's worth of practice. "That's the next thing I was going to ask you," she says. "No one gives you trouble for him, do they?"

Zalara shakes her head. "No. I keep him in the sling much of the day; he sleeps a lot and I take care of him. The boys are all jealous, but they won't hurt him cause I let them help me when it's time to feed him. He loves all the attention he gets."

"There's a good way to win their favor," Kyara chuckles, finishing with the straps. "Alright, Zalara. I'd better go, now that Lia's all clean and her hide's been tended to. Thank you for your help. From both of us." With that, she climbs back up on Liareth's neck, and the pretty green vanes her wings, giving a gentle warble of her own thanks to the Smith girl. "See you later!" she calls from her green's neck, and then they're shortly in the air, winging back to their weyr.

Zalara smiles. “All right, I'll see you later. I'm not trying to win their favor; I'm just being nice. It was nice seeing you both." Even Narcis will give a chirrup good bye.
