Luciana, Magdaline

A former pirate seeks refreshments and Magdaline is just loitering.

It is sunset of the fourth day of the third month of the twelfth turn of the 12th pass.

Igen Weyr - The Tea Room

OOC Date 11 Oct 2017 05:00

"… what in Faranth's name did you do to get chased ? ahh."

The Tea Room

This shop is easy to miss from the street. It bears the same striped awning that most shops have, this one in shades of lilac and sand, but it has no sign save for a plaque of sandstone hung beside the door, on which a teacup has been carved. When open, the heavy curtain that covers the doorway is pulled aside to allow entry. After stepping through, one will find themselves in a tiny space decorated with classic desert touches.

The walls are whitewashed to increase the sense of light within but the floor is tiled in hues of blue and green, with each tile bearing in its center a brilliant red lotus. There are only five small tables, all of them of dark, heavily carved wood set low to the ground. To sit at one requires reclining on the plethora of pillows and cushions and layered rugs provided for that purpose; each seat is provided with a carved wooden back-prop to rest the pillows against, for those who want spinal support. Tea is served from the service at the rear of the room, where a tiny smokeless hearth keeps water heated, and a row of trays are kept loaded with teapots, tiny cups, and containers for sweetener. There is a small selection of fruits, breads and cheeses also available for those looking for a snack but this is not a place for heavy meals.

Spring is here at last! Or at least the hints of it on this particular evening. Sunset sees a few of the regular patrons to the Tea Room. It also brings in one non-Igenite into their midsts! Luciana is at least dressed appropriately enough given the climate shift from this place and Southern, but she has that classic 'I'm not from here but playing it cool' gaze to her as she scans the room. It must be acceptable what she finds in this place because she doesn't turn to drift back out the door. Instead, she makes her way towards the service at the rear of the room. Why not grab something quick to warm up, before heading … wherever it is she's heading?

Someone who isn't heading anywhere, at least apparently not any time soon, is Magdaline. The new assistant headwoman finally has a day off and well, she's been kicked out of anywhere even remotely related to the living caverns after having been chased out of the stores one too many times by Cremla this morning. The woman has a pot of tea and a small tome in her hands although anyone looking closely will probably notice she hasn't turned a page in a while, paying more attention to the comings and goings of the passerbys that can be viewed through the small window near her table.

How does one even order tea? Luciana's feeling well over her head when she's asked what she would prefer and realizes… she has no idea. "I dunno about floral mixtures. I mean… Does it actually taste like flowers?" From her scoffed chuckle, she's about to add 'because that'd be weird' and remembers at the last minute where she is. Biting her tongue, she'll exhale and give her best sheepish smirk to the poor server having to deal with her — and yet not even give the poor girl a chance to get a word in. "And I don't need nothing too fancy." In an act of desperation, she looks about the room and… aha! Magdaline is closest. "'Cus me, ma'am? Which would you recommend?" She'd apologize for interrupting but she can see that that book hasn't been touched!

Well, aside from the book physically being in Magdaline's hands cause she's not able to levitate things. Yet. But Magdaline doesn't seem to put off by being called off from her ruse of book-reading with the query. "I'm partial to the house black. Has a hint of citrus." But mostly it's tea, the black sort. Not to flowery or fancy." For some reason when the woman was served her pot of tea, she was given an extra cup as well. Maybe the server expected someone to come join her instead of just a woman with nothing to do just killing time. Anyways, a hand is gracefully waved towards the spare seat and cup. "You're more then welcome to try a cup." She's got plenty.

That server? Looks SO RELIEVED! Literal sigh and drop of her shoulders before she regains composure and excuses herself. Luciana is all too happy to take Magdaline's invitation and promptly takes the empty seat by the woman's table. "Ahh, that sounds perfect actually! Normally I'm more of a rum and whiskey type gal but…" A slightly impish smile. "Lost a bet before coming this way. Can't touch the stuff for a whole sevenday. But I needed something before heading out again. Thanks for letting me join you! Not interrupting, am I?" A nod to that book.

You can't really blame the poor server. End of a long, hard shift and suddenly being accosted by Southern folks who don't even know that tea is made out of flowers? Who wants to bet that the gossip ends up being how she was beset upon by a wildling or a pirate? In the tea room of all places? Regardless, Magdaline will set the book aside and give her new tablemate a small smile. "This?" A hand points towards the volume. "I've read it twice already. But I was told if I step foot near the caverns again before dinner is over, I'll be chased out with a broom."

Hey, Luciana's been a pirate for awhile, okay? Pirates DON'T drink tea (or at least don't admit to it). And let the gossip flow! She's never cared for it and her stint in Southern with all the chaos of her arrival there as a turncoat a few Turns ago has hardened her skin a bit. BRING IT. "… what in Faranth's name did you do to get chased ? ahh." She might spy Magdaline's knot or maybe she's clever enough to make a few assumptions. "One of those all work, no play, types?" Her grin is relaxed and she feels comfortable enough to simply help herself to some of that tea.

One of those rare instances where the wild gossip, if someone chose to substantiate it, might actually be true! Magdaline just gives a little shrug and raises her hands as she's been caught. "I'm not used to it. Just getting used to the work here. Hadn't had time to think of the play part." Which probably explains the threat of the broom.

Luciana grimaces, but it's hard to tell if it's out of sympathy for Magdaline or the taste of the tea when she gets around to carefully sipping it. Maybe citrus isn't her thing, either? "Nah, I get what you mean. The getting used to it. Kind of was the opposite for me. Was used to a life of little to no restrictions and then suddenly had that flipped around. Took awhile to balance 'work' and play." And yet there's something like a wistful note to her voice. Maybe she hasn't quite ironed out all the kinks yet.

Magdaline nods along and takes a sip of her tea. No grimaces from her, but that shouldn't be surprising considering she did order the tea. "Rebuilding a life is hard. It's easy to forget how many turns it took to build up what you were used to before." Piracy or weyrmate and several young children running around. Both will keep hands full. "But seems like you found a way to adjust. Unless you came to Igen for 'play'." Magdaline won't go so far as to raise an eyebrow, but she's definitely appraising the other woman.

Maybe it's a kind of tea that you just have to keep taking small sips and it gets better each time? Luciana's at least going to try and finish the cup; she's not entirely a heathen, here. "Couldn't have said it any better," she agrees with a lopsided smirk. "Sounds like you speak from experience too?" A small laugh at the assumption and she'll shake her head. Nor does she seem to mind the appraising look. "Faranth, no! I'll keep that sort've business in Southern. No, I'm here on a slim chance I'd hunt down my niece. She went 'n Impressed in that last clutch they had here. Blue. And I get that she don't have time to write anymore but… Figured I'd try a visit in the flesh." From the way her tone shifts, it might not have gone as planned.

There's no smile on Magdaline's face, just another small nod. "Experiencing it myself right now." Hence sitting in the Tea Room all day with nothing to do but read the same boook not once, but twice. She should probably start planning for what to do the next time she ends up with a mandatory rest day. "The last clutch…" it was something that she just missed entirely, but she's not unaware of its existence and exactly how many riders graduated and how long ago. The Weyr's got records on everything, after all. "You would think a letter or two would be manageable at least within the past couple months since they graduated. We do even give our riders off days from time to time."

"Eh, well… If you knew this girl? It'd make sense." Which is Luciana's round about way not to public out Zavyr's inability to write. "Don't hold it against her. I've been told becoming a rider kind of changes things!" And look, she made it through a full cup of tea! Must have not been that bad after all. She will set the cup down however and not refill it, instead pushing back to her feet and offering Magdaline a wide smile. "Was nice of you to share your tea and time… ah." Name? Here, she'll start! "I'm Luciana. Assistant down in Southern ? to the Leadership. More specifically the current Weyrleader." It's a long story. "And unfortunately I can't linger too long." Since she's probably relying on a rider to bring her back. Luciana's got a few connections but she very rarely uses them. Today was the exception, even if it ended up bust.

"I'm sure," Which is Magdaline's very brief way of acknowledging that Luciana probably has very good reasons to what sounds like it's just amounting to a wild wherry chase. And since apparently the other woman is going and doing the whole introduction thing, she'll give a token smile and a nod. "Magdaline. Assistant headwoman. Clear skies, Luciana. And hopefully your next visit will bear more fruit." Although apparently not fruit teas. As for Mags, she still has about another hour to kill, so maybe the third time is the charm as she goes back to reading that book yet again.

What about those new treats at the Pit? THAT might be something Luciana could get into! Aside from viewing some blood sport but hey… "Clear skies, Magdaline! Thanks again for the tea. And brief company! Enjoy the rest of your free time." A small smirk, even a little bemused flicker to her gaze and then she's taking a step back and turning to head back out. Presumedly to meet with her rider home!
