Living Caverns

Dim light from hanging glow-globes cannot fully camouflage the ravages of time and neglect on Igen's busy living caverns, though hints of its former glory peek through in the decorative cuts to the cave's natural limestone and the high quality of dusty, tatty-ended tapestries. Here and there, skybroom tables — stained dark by wood finish and a decade of grime — sit in loose groups, flanked by wicker chairs with pointy, broken rattan that pokes out to invariably find unprotected skin. The seemingly randomly placed furniture, however, at closer inspection, forms a sort of cross-shape of negative space. At the northernmost walls and nooks of the caverns, a long buffet table with tarnished lazy susans hosts an array of finger-foods and pitchers for the interested, refilled occasionally by drudges that shuffle in from the curtained entrance to the south, beyond which lies the kitchens. To the east is a large arch leading outside and, across from that, to the west, a set of rattling doors that open to reveal the tunnels and stairs of the inner caverns themselves.

This warm autumn afternoon has many people currently indoors, avoiding the heat and the sand that threatens to pelt anyone who might be outside a tad too long. Inside, however, has nice cool refreshments. That is where Lyllian finds herself, seated at one of the tables strewn about, and sipping away at a cool redfruit juice while her eyes seem rather glued to a rough hide in-hand. A small plate with sliced fruit sits in front of her, and occasionally her hand idly reaches out to take another slice from its surface.

It appears as if Linny's going to be stuck here for awhile given her impending meetings and the imminent storm, and so it seems like the perfect time to take a little break and enjoy her afternoon as much as she can if this is where she's going to have to be. The weyrwoman casually picks and chooses from the cavern's offerings for the day, sticking to her typical healthy options, or at least nothing very sweet. Because she's sweet enough as it is, right? Right. Once her plate has been filled up enough, then comes time for her to take a seat, and she grabs one not too far from Lyllian. First, she gets herself settled, napkin in lap, and after a few bites, her attention is finally drawn over to her. "Weren't you at that meeting with Lord Tirvin?" Linny, herself, is without hidework to read over as she eats, quite the rarity, so it seems as if she's left to conversation to entertain her during her lunchtime.

Lyllian catches the gold rider's voice and turns her head over towards Linny. Brightly, she smiles. Recognition is nice, and she's not one to shy from leadership. "Yes, weyrwoman. I took the meeting Record on behalf of the Harpers." Her hide is placed on the table and she gently scoots her bum in its chair to better face Linny, at least as much as the wicker chair allows. Always give weyrleadership the full attention they deserve, yep! There is an inward worry that begins as she remembers the Record again, fearing that she might have messed up on her first real duty assignment, and she blurts out, "I do hope the Record was to your liking." That sounded far more awkward than it did in her head.

"Of course it was," Linny smoothly replies, with a smile to match, pausing only to fork a slice of fruit before her attention gets put back upon the girl. "I just wanted to make sure it really was you. Trying to make sure I've still got it." Her memory, of course. Back in the day, the weyrwoman's mind was a vault of names and faces, and now it's turned into quite the sieve. If only they had duct tape on Pern to fix that. There's a small wink before she brings that fork to her mouth to insert the fruit there, silent as she chews even as she keeps brown eyes on Lyllian. "Will you be sitting in on our meetings from now on?" is her question once she's properly swallowed, arching eyebrows while she brings her water glass up for a few healthy sips.

Lyllian's smile beams a bit brighter at Linny's response. Disaster diverted. Wiping her fruit-hand's fingers off with her napkin, she then settles them in her lap. "Thank you, weyrwoman. It was my first official scrivener duty assignment. Whether I will be in more meetings, I would be happy to, so long as the Harper leadership approves." Although inwardly, she chants, 'Or weyrleadership asks for me, or weyrleadership asks for me…' Presumably a boring job, but it is her area of speciality, and… it's top weyr business!

"Well, hopefully they approve you. Some of the Harpers we get, they look as if they are about to fall asleep or that they couldn't care less that they are there. It would be nice to get some fresh blood in there with us." A definitive nod and then Linny is stabbing some fresh vegetables with her fork, though she pauses from bringing it up for her to bite off of it, head falling to the side as she considers Lyllian again. "I can't imagine they would have let you sit in on such an important meeting if you weren't any good. I'm sure they have big plans for you." Another flash of that charming smile of hers, and then she finally starts crunching on her veggies.

Thenan walks in from the Central Bowl.

This has Lyllian just beaming at this point. "Of course, weyrwoman. I will certainly inquire. I don't mind the work at all" There is a moment of recollection, that she may not have been fully introduced. She adds, "By the way, in case it wasn't caught prior, weyrwoman, I am Apprentice Harper Lyllian. Journeyman Harper Erikkhan oversees much of my studies." Despite the attention she attempts to fully give Linny, at this point her own small fruit plate is tempting her and a hand idly wanders towards it again. For those who might also be popping in this afternoon, Lyllian and Linny are seated relatively near each other, avoiding the potential sandstorm outside, and enjoying their own little snacks.

"Lyllian. Such a pleasure to properly meet you. And now that I know your name, perhaps I will have to ask Journeyman Erikkhan for your services again." It seems as if she caught Linny in a particularly good mood— it's either eating healthy that's making her feel so great or maybe her meetings haven't been terrible today or a surprising mixture of both. Whatever it may be, it doesn't even fade away when Linny's eyes briefly go unfocused and then roll, though that bright smile of hers remain. "If you'll excuse me, apparently now I'm being called into a meeting to…convince some poor Holder into doing what we want." And that makes her expression fall slightly onto the darker side. Linny loves what she does and berating Holders is a part of that. She scoops up her plate, no meeting is going to take her away from her food, and she gives a nod to Lyllian. "I will hopefully see you again very soon, Lyllian. Until then." And then the goldrider is heading off in the direction of the Council Chambers.

Thenan slinks his way into the living caverns, blinking as he steps through the opening and his eyes adjust to the light of the inside. There is a furtive glance given towards those inside, but the finger foods laid out by the drudges are too tempting and lure him in further. A couple of sweet pastries nabbed, he turns to look more fully at the room - and gives a little wriggle of now-sticky-fingers to Lyllian. Even as he notices who she is talking to and he quickly swallows a bite of pastry.

Lyllian bites her lip a bit at Linny's mention of a rather unpleasant meeting, but she gives her a gentle exit greeting before her eyes spy Thenan approaching. "Well, well," she says in a sudden change of demeanor now that the gold rider has disappeared from view. She giggles softly at his sugar-coated fingers and pats the chair arm beside her. There's still a small plate of sliced fruit in front of her, and an open hide she had been studying. A glass of redfruit juice also sits there. She's getting her sugar in her own way. "What brings the stableboy in?"

Thenan moves across with his surviving pastry and a half, giving the departing figure of the Gold rider a little look - relief as she moves past and away. His attention turns back to the young harper and a small grin appears "You know, we do not survive on the fodder that the animals have, M'lady Harper." Thenan answers "Though, I think I prefer their company to the bustle in the halls still."

"I don't know if I should feel hurt or not," Lyllian states with another giggle and pops another slice of fruit in her mouth. "How are the runners, anyhow?" she asks after washing down her food with the juice. "It has been a while since I've been out that way. Or, shards, since I've even seen you out and about." Her foot gently nudges his leg, and then she pats the chair arm again, clearly indicating he should stop standing.

Thenan obligingly slides into the chair offered, giving a little roll of his eyes "And yet somehow I feel like the runner being broken and domesticated. Trained to live in the confines of our world." Or, he is just being made to sit and is a melodramatic boy. Still. He sets the pastries infront of him and gives a little nod as he tries his best to eat the remainder of the half pastry "Mmph." Nope, that was trying to talk too quickly. He looks guilty and swallows before he nods again "I've been busy with the runners - had to go to a couple of the holds between threadfalls as we trade for new stock. Keep the blood fresh."

"Nothing wrong with a little domestication," Lyllian states, matter of factly. "I would think a stablehand would prefer the broken runners to the wild in terms of everyday care." She pops in the last slice of fruit and shoves the dish to the side. She leans casually upon her elbow. "Traveling must be fun! All of the nature," and the endless desert, "and travel partners. Bring me back anything? I've been here playing scribe lately, myself. It almost sounds like I'll be a regular scrivener for meeting Records soon. But I think that decision's up to Journeyman Erikkhan, ultimately."

"I don't know, people might talk - domesticated by a little slip of a harper girl." The young stablehand teases, grinning broadly at her "And, wild runners can be fun. The breaking is the fun part though. Rather than the broken part." At the talk of traveling his eyes go to the door and he nods before he shrugs "It…was not much fun, I am afraid. Hiding from Thread under overhangs in some of those thread caverns is not that much fun. But. When you have animals to protect? They kind of get the choice spots deep in the cave. So no, no presents - was I meant to? I brought myself back - that's like a gift to the whole weyr!"

"I'm an apprentice; don't get any ideas," Lyllian says with a giggle, even if she does beam a smile back at him. Clearly she takes her work, and its restrictions, seriously. Changing the subject… "So, wow, you got stuck out in Thread a few times? That must have been sharding scary. I take it everything went okay, though? No loss of life or supplies?" She picks up her drink, takes a sip, and then leaves it nestled in her hands.

"You mean no handsome scars like some of the riders?" Thenan answers back quickly, teasing as his tongue tip is bitten between his teeth in a grin. The grin is only broken with a small bite of pastry, the mastication and setting down of which gives him time to think, but provides him no answers and so he asks "An apprentice? Ideas?" He looks at her with a tilted head "And, really, I turned my back on it and closed my eyes. We were in the caves ,there was no danger. But still. My family were traders. It is hardly unusual."

Can't play coy with her. Lyllian just simply giggles softly again at his feigned ignorance and finishes her drink. "Well, in any case, I'm glad you're okay, and back." She steals a glance over towards the door. "Are you heading out on the plains again anytime soon? Or focusing your attentions on the runners at home for the next few sevendays?"

Thenan gives Lyllian's leg its own nudge from his knee before smiling at her "Well, your concern is welcome, Lady Harper. And yes, I'm well - as I hope you are? Hanging out with those in charge…seems you are the go getter!" His eyes follow hers to the door before they return to her eyes and he shakes his head "No, no more trips for now…but that doesn't mean you can get back to domesticating me."

"Ah, today's meeting with weyrwoman Linny was just happenstance. We were both enjoying snacks, and she recognized me from when I took the Record the other day during a meeting involving leadership. So we started talking. And really, the weyrwomen are so kind." At least in her experience. "You should get to know them, yourself." She lets out another soft giggle at his domestication comment, and states, "Well, since you do seem to be pushing it… Harpers are the holders of law and teaching. Who would be better to domesticate a runnerboy?"

"I'm a stablehand - not sure there is much they'd want with me. I keep all the things their dragons just love to try and eat. So, avoiding them is kind of my job. Costs a few marks when their dragons snap up a runner, you know." Thenan leans back in the chair, thinking over his response to her tease "Mm. Well, can you ever tame a traderboy, no matter his current colours?" He asks, an eyebrow raised "Anyway, maybe I'll just break you, get you being all improper and chasing the runner beasts in the dust."

Lyllian rolls her eyes a bit, but amusement is clear on her face as she spins out of her chair to pick up her plate and hide. "You just try that," she tells the other teen, and tries not to let him see her grin as she takes her items over to the dirty bin. "But as for me, I should finish studying," she says, giving an emphasizing tap of the hide on her shoulder before she tucks it into her belt. "You behave yourself, runnerboy."

"Harpers. All hide and no fun, will leave you squinting and all frowns." Thenan chides playfully before he pushes himself to his feet, grabbing the last bit of pastry "And if you are off to study, then I guess I had better get back to the stable and check on the runners. Though, I guess you win a little bit Lyllian. I did eat at a table for most of my meal." A broad grin and a wriggle of his fingers in a little wave to Lyllian

Lyllian gives a twiddle of her fingers back towards Thenan, then disappears back out the door to brave the bowl, and find her way back to the Crafting Area.
