"No rest for the wicked. Ever."

Archive Library

Where once books reigned supreme, this open space is now dominated by a stalwart skybroom reaching to the sky through a broken ceiling. What was once evidence of collapse is now ornately carved with engraved ivy, matched by a clever contraption of stone that allows the gap to be closed in inclement weather. A small garden occupies the space around the tree-trunk, all manicured bushes and flowering shrubbery enclosed by a grated gutter. The walls are lined with bookcases, while a spiral staircase leans on the western wall to wind upwards to the second level. Tucked in the corners and scattered in the main areas are tables and chairs, cafe-style, and comfortably worn overstuffed armchairs. It is the perfect place for individuals to gather, to enjoy the offerings of the food-cart or a spirited conversation.

In the wake of the storm's aftermath and now the supposed 'treasure' sightings on the beach, could things get any worse? Va'os won't say it out loud but it's bound to happen. Nothing goes as "easy" here, does it? Stifling a yawn with the back of his hand, he'll wander groggily into the Archives. Already the morning meeting and reports have been dealt with and while most are off to see to their duties, the Weyrleader doesn't even stop for a trip to the caverns first. Nah, he's just going to startle a few of the early-shift apprentices and grunt out a single word: "Maps." Realizing that they're just staring at him, he amends. "Of Southern, Black Rock and Southern Barrier Hold." Maybe some klah to go with it? No? Well then. He'll just find somewhere to plunk himself down and wait. Sure, he could've done it himself but… where's the fun in that?

Rielle has been here long enough now to know better, too. If things don't take any more interesting turns, she'll be pleasantly surprised. With Serval's drills done for the morning, she decides to wander into the archives herself, an itch of curiosity begging to be scratched. Spying Va'os, she starts his way…then notices his half-awake state and detours to the cart to grab two mugs of klah. Then she circles back and drifts up beside him, holding out a mug for him to take, a small, wry smile tilting her lips after she stifles her own yawn on the back of her wrist. "No rest for the wicked. Ever," she observes ruefully, though tired teal eyes still dance subtly with the words. "What are you after now, Weyrleader?"

'Lo, Va'os' saviour doth arrive! "Oh, hey! Thanks," his surprise is genuine as he's snapped out of his semi-dozing state but there's relief too when she offers him that mug. She'll have to wait a moment too, because he's going to enjoy the first few sips before sinking back in his seat. Ahh, much better! "And that saying has way too much merit to it." So is he admitting that he's wicked? Her prompt as to his business here, he merely grins and oh-so cheerfully quips: "Maps! Going to try and keep ahead on this thing." Planning, in other words! "See if we can't stave off the worst of this before 'Fall takes up our time and focus again." Because, priorities.

Rielle is more than content to wait, taking the time to enjoy her own initial sips and grinning rather impishly at Va'os' next. Of course she thinks he's wicked! But only in the best ways. His reply earns a little hitch of gently-angled brows. "Keeping ahead," she echoes, hooking the nearest chair closer so that she can settle down beside him. "What are you anticipating happening, exactly?"

"Anything," Va'os isn't intending to be cryptic, but truthfully his thoughts (much like his plans) are only half formed. "I'm trying to anticipate anything happening. Figured I'd gather some maps and go over what was reported this morning and… I dunno." Maybe something will jump out at him? He shrugs his shoulders and enjoys a little more of that klah before the Apprentices return with armloads each of maps. "Ahh… shit." Should've been more specific! "You bring me that entire section or what? Woah, hey! Hold on." They're stalled from retreating and Va'os gestures to the table. "Leave 'em here. I'll sort through them." And probably not put them back where they belong. He's an archivists nightmare!

Va'os' reply has Rielle smiling again, though it's an expression of admiration rather than amusement. The appearance of all those maps, however, has her brows rising again. When the Apprentices make their retreat, she chuckles softly and shakes her head. "You are a good Weyrleader, Va'os," she says, and leans over to land a soft kiss on his cheek. "Because you worry that anything could happen." Though perhaps worry isn't the word so much as anticipate. It could be both. She reaches forward and turns one of the maps to read the label on the end. "You know," she muses aloud, "with those marks getting found, we might start seeing treasure divers out there. With the weather being what it is…" No need to elaborate on the dangers presented to people who decide to be that foolish…and to those who might end up in the path of the shadier sorts. "Coordinating with the Seacraft and dolphins about some patrols and protection for coastal settlements could be something to look seriously at right now. I can get Serval on that, if you like."

Va'os is mildly taken aback by her compliment (or vote of confidence, let's be real) and though he smiles for the kiss, he's quick to toss back. "Still might prove you wrong, y'know!" About being a good Weyrleader, that is. It might be more anticipation than 'worry' or it's some weird mixed up blend of both! Regardless, his motives could be perceived as 'good'. He'll let her take the one map, unrolling another and promptly setting it aside after a cursory glance. Nope! Next one. He does pay attention to her though, while he works away at his klah and those maps. Multitasking, go! "Divers? Isn't it bad enough they're digging up the beach?" he sighs, setting his mug aside somewhere safe before peering sidelong at her. "Don't see why that'd be a bad idea. May as well… before someone gets the not-so bright idea." And then they have bodies on the shores! Because this IS Southern~

Rielle scoffs softly, swatting Va'os' arm lightly for his self-deprecation before searching out a coastline map and scooting over to unroll it on an empty patch of table. "Just trying to anticipate," she tells the bronzerider with a wink. "Besides, with shifting the Black Rockers to nearby settlements…well. Much as I try to give the benefit of the doubt, I can't see some of them not taking advantage of all that's happened and coming out to play, so to speak." Seeking out treasure they have no claim to would probably be the most minor way something could happen with them. After a few quiet moments, she turns her head to study him a bit, asking more softly, "Are you doing alright, after everything so far? Beyond just worrying about it all, I mean."

"Hey!" Va'os can poke fun at himself! He grins at the swatting and shifts a little on his chair so that she can scoot closer. Her observations are met with a grimace and a small nod of his head. "Won't argue that. Even though I never got a chance to really see Black Rock Hold as it is… before I became a rider." So he's going a lot by other's first hand experiences with the people there ? or running into a few of the residents himself. Having been among convicts and never-do-wells (and just straight up Not Good Criminals), he's got plenty of ideas of what could come out of the would-be woodwork. "Can't complain," he mutters, while setting aside another map in the 'no good' pile. So far he's only looking to commit to one or two. "Definitely kept busy! Never a dull moment. Get my sleep when I can. Try to remember to eat… y'know. The usual!" And he's dodging around a subject but hey, that's not new either! He gives her a playful nudge to her side with his elbow. "I'm fine! Don't worry." See that grin? All's well! "How're you?" Va'os will at least get to hear her answer before an unspoken summons has him sighing. No rest for the wicked, indeed! "I've gotta go. Take care and maybe we can try to grab dinner sometime…" Promises, promises! Can he keep it?

Much as Rielle does love Va'os' grinning, his answer isn't quite what she was looking for…though perhaps the library isn't really the place for what she'd hoped to get. Ah well. Still, she catches herself almost frowning a bit and nips it in the bud, instead giving him a little smile and nodding for his last. "Definitely. See you later, Va'os." She watches as he moves off and then, with a sigh, goes back to her own study, pulling out a notebook to make a list of settlements and jot down locations and other thoughts about the project ahead. And she'll try to put all those maps in some semblance of order before leaving herself, trying to be a little less of a nightmare for the archivists than the Weyrleader might be.
