Talya, Katrya

Katrya and Talya have a moment to talk as their lifemates (mostly) doze.

It is late night of the fourth day of the sixth month of the fourteenth turn of the 12th pass.

Weyrling Barracks

Natural entropy lies restrained by sheer force of will within the chaotic spiral of Southern's weyrling-barracks. The large entry hollows out into an immense common area at the front of the barracks, where sustenance can be procured for both sides of the lifebond: tables are typically set out with at least the trimmings for sandwiches, and often carcasses lie in the hollowed pit for fresh weyrlings to carve chunks of meat for their new lifemates. Beyond, the couches are set within a U-shape around a long pool, spring-fed, large enough to bathe growing dragons.
Heavy tapestries line the stone walls towards the rear of the barracks, while space is at a premium towards the front: shelves and pegs hold leathers and tools, books and useful trinkets of the dragonriding trade. The narrow-point of the U branches into two hallways: one for the candidate barracks, and one for the weyrlingmaster's office.

Darkness has settled over the Weyr and the glowlights are low in the barracks. Turahaimajusuth has had several days of drama, meltdowns, and also enjoying living life with Talya. The human half is just utterly exhausted from it. Being night, most of the weyrlings are exhausted into sleep, and Tura is actually one of them finally. Tal has settled beside him, taking her cot's bedding and pillow and resting on the dragon's couch instead to always be touching the young dragon. She's wide awake, however, and rubbing patterns into the tail that is wrapped around her waist possessively. Two jeweled whirling eyes are watching her from the empty cot, a soft cheep in question. "I haven't forgotten about you guys," Tal calls softly to the firelizard pair. Okay, maybe she has. "Sorry you've had to care for yourselves."

Evening has Vinodestroth fading in and out of sleep, mindlink influencing Katrya to the same restless pattern. Instead of the teen going to the dragon, the dragon has come to her. His wedge-shaped noggin is resting on her stomach, bobbing up in down in time with her breathing. She's currently propped herself up on some pillows and her own firelizard has just popped back from between after delivering a message. "He's finally asleep?" she directs to Talya with quirked lips, nudging her chin towards the snoozing Tura.

Talya turns her attention away from her staring firelizards to glance at Katrya, giving a soft chuckle. Not daring to laugh any louder than that currently. "Yes, finally. I'm always surprised when he's asleep now." She keeps her voice low but thankfully it travels. Not to mention it looks like Turahaimajusuth is passed out that there is barely a flicker of mind touch to his lifemate. "I slept like a stone that first night. I guess it was too good to be true. How is yours?"

Katrya's firelizard chirrups at her when her attention wanders before noticing he's brought back a message for her. "Oh! I'm sorry, Traum. You're so very clever." She unties the bit of twine around his torso to free him from his package and then he's off to the rafters to preen. "He's only a few months old, himself. I think he's a bit jealous of all the attention Vinodestroth's getting. Not the baby anymore." Low chuckle. "Oh, I'm glad, Talya. I think we all slept like rocks, though I'm sure part of that was how tired these little dears were. It's a lot of work and excitement to hatch! We've been going in and out of sleep — normally I'd be wide awake right now, but I can feel him affecting me… if that makes sense." Vino wiggles his head, burrowing deeper into her flesh with a satisfied huff that earns a fond smile from the girl. The message is unrolled and scanned quickly, some of the tension flowing from her shoulders as she does so, before she sets it aside.

"I got mine just before and just after the time I stood in Igen," Talya tells the younger girl in her quiet voice. She looks to the gold and blue who give a chirp in return, seeing they were being spoken about. "I feel bad even if they are older, but Tura just takes too much of my time." As if knowing, the tail seems to snake around her lap a little tighter. Tal remains quiet, holding her breath even, hoping that Turahaimajusuth stays asleep. Thankfully he does… "I'm wired right now, not wanting to sleep, but I know that can change in minutes. I guess I just want to see him like this… peaceful and asleep for a little while longer." Her attention finally strays to the letter that the other brown weyrling received. "Good news from home?"

"I should make sure he gets oiled and check his hide tomorrow. Goodness knows we have enough of it around here — almost like there's sixty-something growing dragons in here or something." There's definitely some stress there regarding how cramped their quarters are for th time being bleeding over in Katrya's tone. "Though hopefully less, soon. I've heard the senior weyrlings will be graduating soon and we'll have the barracks all to ourselves." Turahaimajusuth is considered, causing Vinodestroth to flicker an eye open. "Of course not, Vin." With hope to Talya, "I'm sure he'll mellow out in a few months. They all will. He's quite handsome in a… sharp, stabby kind of way. Sleek. Aerodynamic?" Yes, those seem like the right words. As for the note? Vinodestroth bristles a bit as it's brought up and she has to hurry to soothe him. Even so, she flushes slightly, taking on an airy tone, "Ah, just a message back from a 'rider who was injured pretty seriously a few sevendays ago. I was in the Infirmary helping at the time. Just sent a message to check in on her." A hand drops down to the head resting on her lower torso as she melts down her pillows, moving the wedge with her, "And she's quite fine, Vino. Didn't penetrate to the fascia, so it just needed some time and kept an eye on, is all." The dragon snorts before settling again.

Talya seems to be of equal opinion with Katrya regarding the cramped barracks. "I'm sure they'll be just as happy to get out of here as we are happy to get some more space to ourselves," she notes with a heavy sigh. "Especially if they can get away from the more… ah, agitated dragons." Yes, she is talking about her own, though giving him a fond look and a smile. "He's just a big baby right now, I'm sure of it too." Famous last words. When Katrya answers about the note her eyes jerk back towards the girl, brow raised. "Before the hatching then? Do I know the rider?" The idea of being Threadscored and stuck in the infirmary has Talya tensing, which in turn seems to be enough to have unsettled Turahaimajusuth in his sleep. The dragon shifts, the tail curls, and there's a low rumbling grunt. She sets a hand onto his head as she tries to still her own thoughts from transmitting to the dragon.

"Oh, yes, I'm sure it can't be fun having a bunch of little siblings move in under your feet like this. Just when you think you're done with draconic outbursts, bam! Thirty-three newborns show up where you live." Katrya does her best to suppress one of her bubbly giggles lest it disturb those actually managing to slumber. "Yeah, not quite a sevenday before… Alyna, green Haquith's. Rides with Ocelot. She'll be fine, though," she's quick to reassure Talya, adding with a joking wink, "After all, I helped fix her up."

"At least they're over the outburst stage, it seems." Talya is at least glad that her lifemate doesn't affect the older dragons quite as much as he does his own clutchmates. "Though, Turahaimajusuth doesn't mind too much, he rather likes watching the older ones move around." It's good that Katrya added that extra reassurance, though Talya still sits up with a startled "What?" This time Turahaimajusuth does seem to become unsettled, and the rumble is more awake. A slim section of eye is visible, just barely open but trying to see what is going on that has disturbed his lifemate. She's quick to try to calm down and reassure him back to sleep: "No, love, nothing is wrong. Get back to sleep, I'm not going anywhere." To Katrya she frowns, brows furrowing together and when she talks, she tries to keep her voice pleasant even if the words are anything but, "I didn't know. I'm really a shit friend, aren't I?"

Katrya freezes as Talya's lifemate is roused, working under the 'if I don't move he can't see me' theory. You know. Like all those dinosaurs Pern has. "Ah, so I take it you do know her. Right. Well. She's getting out a few days, the letter said, and she's walking around!" There's a pang of empathy from Vino, causing him to lift his head and turn sedately whirling eyes to Talya. "We've all been busy. If I hadn't been there when it happened, I would've known at all. You can't blame yourself for that. And we've been all but locked up in here for the past two sevendays, anyway. No one expects us to be able to do everything. Hell, we barely have time to feed our firelizards right now." Her tone is firm, unusual for the girl. It seems to have taken a lot out of her to speak with such purpose as she finishes the statement with a broad yawn.

Talya's pleased tone is tight; she seems to be doing a good job of suppressing whatever emotion but it's still hard to keep that upbeat tone to keep her dragon clueless. "It still feels like something I should have— or at least checked in on her, friends do that from time to time." Her eyes slide back over to her firelizards and the gold seems to sit up, as if sensing she may be needed soon. She'd be happy to deliver something if it meant getting attention! But Talya just shakes her head, dragging the blanket at her feet up to cover her shoulders. "Thank you for letting me know though, Katrya. I'm glad to hear she's doing well… I think I'm gonna try to sleep." She doesn't sound like she'll be sleeping though. She leans her head up against her lifemate's body and Turahaimajusuth finally closes that eye, half-asleep as he was and watching.

"And now that you know, you will, right? So you're a good friend. Try not to beat yourself up too much." And that's all Katrya's got to say on the manner, because in the interim Vinodestroth has passed out on her lap (empathy is exhausting for such a tiny dragon!) and she's near dosing off herself. "Mmhm. I'm glad I could. Sleep well, Talya." As a drowsy afterthought, she adds, "And Turahaimajusuth."
