Beach

An eerie mirror, the glass-quiet Sea of Azov: the clear waters stretch along the dark-pebbled shores, and along this narrow beach. Here the faintest lap of waves belies the calm beyond; here the rocks have been ground down into finest, softest sand - those observant would mark upon the similarity between it and the sands of the hatching grounds. The soft sand soaks up summer sunlight as a sponge; painfully hot during the warmer months, it is only truly pleasant at wintertime. Rocks rise to east and west, lichen-limned and green against the abyssal darkness of stone.

It is the sixty-fourth day of Autumn and 86 degrees. It is partly cloudy and everything is wet still from the recent rains.

Safi really should find herself some nice steady friends, but coming off a meeting with a mindhealer the last thing the girl wants is to interact with others. So instead she has retreated to the side of the ocean and walks with a basket on her hip and a sweater over her shoulders to ward away any chill that comes from the ground being so wet. Occasionally she bends and picks up a sea shell. Sometimes it gets tossed into her basket, and other times it gets returned to the sea. Picky she is.

Autumn weather brings storms, storms, and more storms. Although today's weather hasn't been particularly awful, everything is still very, very wet. Not as wet as what's Odesse's day has been seeing as the dolphineer has been spending most the day out with the pod doing a sweep which mostly involved righting some of the dolphin bells that have been set up along the coast. Every work day does come to an end though and so woman and dolphins make their way towards shore. Her swimming is rather sedate compared to the flashy acrobatic antics Javen and Opo are putting on, each trying to out do the other and just earning a snort and a splash from the journeyman. "Ye both win, 'kay?" There's squees from that and more flips and splashing. Argument totally not settled.

And then there is Jedameth, who for all his training doesn't blast people with that mindvoice of his out the gate. No instead he is moving at a quick pace, even for his clumsy legs as he just had another growth spurt and is still getting used to his new body changes. He will wait till he gets to the beach before he starts looking about he knows that girl with the basket, but not the other one, so he will slowly walk over to try and not scare Safi and peek into her basket to see what she is carrying. Th'res on the other hand is last to show running after his blue who by the looks of it as learned to out run his bonded. Dolphins are unnoticed….for now..

Safi glances occasionally at the dolphins but keeps a respectful distance less the journeyman not wish to be disturbed except for the dolphins. The not-little-much-longer dragon that approaches gets a shy smile from Safi who doesn't realize he wants the basket and this clutches it closer to her instead. There is a bit of unease on her part behind that smile - the last up close interaction she had with a dragon almost involved her getting squished and there being blood everywhere. With her hands about the basket she has none to greet Th'res.

Interrupted? Interruptions are the least of Odesse's worries as her and her aquatic companions are probably more of a danger in interrupting other folks, if there was anybody foolish enough to think that Southern's main beach would ever truly be quiet. The dolphins will continue loudly cavorting amongst themselves in the water, but Odesse is not a fish (or aquatic mammal) and needs to get back to land at some point which is now. Once she's on shore, there's a little bit of a shiver as it's cooler than she expected with the wind. She heads over to a rock and looks for something, then spins around, still searching. "Hey! Either of ye see a bag?" That very general statement is directed at both weyrling and apprentice.

Th'res just got here and shakes his head as he calls back "No Ma'am" and were his attention on the dolphineer then he would of taken off his jacket to give to her but right now he is attempting to reign in that very friendly blue of his » You are scaring her, Remember we talked about this, your bigger than you were before you have to be slow now..« And it works as Jedameth stops in his tracks and lowers himself to the ground to look as non-scary dragon like as he can with those very large eyes staring up at Safi his mind is excited as colors of blues, greens, and yellows swirl and create a picture form of a sunny happy day, pour out to the young woman with the basket « Hello, what ya doing? »

Safi shakes her head quickly in answer to the woman, but her inquiry gives Safi a chance to step away from the blue to try to help look for the bag the woman has asked about. She is going to be very focused on that until the mindvoice breaks into hers. A very real squeak gets met with that as well as a physical reaction which has the basket of shells getting thrown and Safi tumbling onto her butt after tripping on a rocky outcropping. "W…what?"

Odesse didn't really have high hopes that either of them had seen her bag, but figured it was at least worth a shot. She'll just shrug and continue on searching, keeping a cautious eye on the weyrling blue nearby. "He don't have a taste for towels, does he?" No offense, Th'res, but she may totally be implying that Jedemath might have eaten the missing bag. And then there's a tumbling apprentice. "Didja find somethin'?" Even if Safi didn't, Odesse is going to be all up in her personal space, double checking just to see if something interesting made her trip.

Jedameth doesn't eat things… that is Lochanth thank you very much, but seeing as he just knocked a girl over he will move back a few feet as Th'res runs over to check on Safi "Are you alright Safi?" The red headed man says as he will kneel down to as well to see if she needs help or has been injured. Hey what is that? Jed has spied the mammals in the water now and gone are those drills about not shouting as everyone near him will become bombarded with Oranges and reds and other vibrant colors that swirl and collide as the blues mindvoice echo's « LOOK AT THE SIZE OF THOSE THINGS, WHAT ARE THEY? CAN I PLAY WITH THEM? ARE THEY FRIENDLY? » and he is already moving towards the edge of the water to get a better look.

Safi is a bit dazed by her sudden introduction to the ground so she can only barely manage to stutter an affirmation that she is okay to both Odesse and Th'res. A random stroke of luck though, as she pulls out a squishy fabric bag that had cushioned her fall and holds it out to Odesse, her aforementioned bag maybe? She has just enough time to note that her collection of sea shells is scattered when their is yelling in her head. Another undignified yelp and Th'res becomes a shield as Safi curls her hands in his shirt and presses her head against his chest like she is trying to hide.

Whether that squish fabric bag is actually the one Odesse was looking for (it wasn't), doesn't matter. Since it seems to have a towel and she's cold-ish, she's going to take it with a smile. "Thanks!" And then she just starts laughing at the sudden OMGDOLPHINS!!! from the young blue's discovery. "They're dolphins. 'N ye can play with 'em as long as yer careful with yer talons!" She makes little claw hand gestures to go along with that. As for the dolphins, the four of them are going to do their best attempt to try and lure a new potential playmate out into the water. Does Jedameth like splashing? Cause there's a lot of splashing going on out there.

Th'res looks over his shoulder at the blue who is in porpoise shock and is chuckling until Safi is curling into his chest and shirt and he instinctively hugs her till he realizes what is going on and his ears turn as red as his hair. The man glances at Odesse when she says it is alright he relays to his dragon » Go on you, remember no claws «. There is a pause and then he looks down at Safi saying "Sorry about that he gets excited easily". Jedameth on the other hand is already in the water, he will uses his limbs to get to deeper water then he uses his body to wiggle through the water. taking his tail he splashes the dolphins right back probably with more water than they are sending.

Th'res' embarrassed thoughts are not echoed in Safi's mind. She's too rattled to even begin to think like that. Odesse and Th'res' nonchalance calms some of her unease and so she lets go of his shirt and leans over warily to spy the blue frolicking in the water. With hesitant surprise, "He is like a baby runner." All bounding you at new discoveries. All Jed needs is an indulgent mother to make the scene perfect. Scooting back Safi pushes herself back to her feet and finally has time to be embarrassed by how close she had gotten to the Weyrling. "Sorry, um," then just for good measure to Odesse, "Sorry."

Unlike the younger two people present, Odesse has completely no shame even as she's standing on the shore in a swimsuit and a stolen borrowed towel. The blushing and apologies gets a raised eyebrow, first at Th'res, then at Safi, then back at Th'res again since he seems to be the one that's the most embarrassed. Does she sense secrets??? If she looks hard enough and waits, will either of them cave and spill everything? Out in the water, it's more difficult than one would think to splash a dolphin, even with Jedameth's size advantage. They're quick and nimble, darting under the water more often than they are out of it. Every so often one of them will swim close enough to try and tickle the weyrling's belly.

Jedameth wiggles and rolls in the water as he tries to catch the Dolphins with his snout, no teeth or claws he remembered that but he still gives chase. While he is used to the blushing of his life mate that playful mind that is reaching out to the others as he is lost in the game dances blues and greens « Hey these ones are fast!!! I bet they are faster than Toz. Oh did you want to come back in the water too Th'res it will help cool you off. » The now fully embarrassed miner clears his throat and says trying to save some of his dignity "No apology, he is rather loud sometimes, are you sure you are alright?" He moves to start picking up the shells and put them in the basket as he is not really wanting to stand up right now.

No secrets from the apprentice! Just embarrassment at beings so started at what must be totally common or the other two would be freaking out by now. "Oh, yoy… you don't have to…" Safi says to Th'res as he begins picking up her shells. "It, I'm sorry to disturb you Journeywoman," even if she did find her bag. (The only safe assumption since she seemed perfectly happy with the towel. Watch her get some kind of skin. rash from it now though.)

Jed be nimble, Jed be quick, and Jed might just be able to tag a dolphin! They're definitely getting close enough as they tease and play. Whenever one's jumping out of the water there's a great deal of squeeing and clicking. Odesse watches the dragon playing and laughs. "He's not the loudest that's played with 'em." Cause Taliveth loves the dolphins and makes sure everyone else nearby knows that as well. And she's just going to take her chances with mystery towel like she's done this before and not had bad results. How risky could it be anyways?

Jedameth is young and full of energy if not actual talent or skill yet. He propels himself through the water at the dolphins he gets and idea and reaches out his now long wingspan as he swims flapping his wings gently in the water to propel him forward. It is fast but he might just get a dolphin with a wing tip, as he tries. Th'res shakes his head saying "Yes I do, you wouldn't of dropped them had Jed not been so curious." He looks over at Odesse the woman who not long ago let him play with dolphins in much the same manner "Let me know if he gets out of hand or starts to annoy them." because not everyone loves his blue like he does.

Safi is sneaking peeks over her shoulder at the dragons and dolphins all frolicking happily. When she isn't stealing those glances she bends to try to speed up the gathering of the shells she FIRMLY believes Th'res should NOT be doing. "They are louder?" Safi is hard put to imagine it, the words the dragon had projected still very vivid in her mind. If she happens to brush hands against Th'res as they reach for the same she'll well… that happens, right?

Odesse nods very quickly and decisively. "Yep! Plenty louder!" Joys that Safi can look forward to as long as she lives in a Weyr. There's bound to be at least a few loudmouths in the bunch. and the slightly older woman might be a journeywoman, but she's not Safi's journeywoman. She sees that accidental handbrushing and combined with all the blushing earlier, she's just going to grin and take it as a sign to give skedaddle. "Behave you too. Or not." She'll just wave and take her purloined towel off with her. It's totally okay cause she left a towel on the beach earlier so the towel balance remains the same.

Jedameth is chasing those dolphins and they are chasing him in return, and for once the young blue is quiet and calm. Th'res is picking them up because it is the right thing to do, but when she brushes his hand there is almost a lightning shock for the young man that he has a hard time hiding his reaction. And this makes the blue in the water stop for a moment to look back at his rider before he goes back to chasing the shipfish..er dolphins. Th'res clearing his throat again says "He has made some friends of other dragons who are loud too, so I don't know if it will get worse when he was older but he used to project to the whole Weyr when we would wake up."

Adult! Leaving! Safi pauses and raises her had to the woman before licking her lips against a sudden dryness. "I… didn't… know they talked… to others." Well, she knows now, but it was not common knowledge where she comes from. "That's, um, all of them." Less they brush hands again. Safi did notice the reaction and she would really rather it not be super weird. There was probably something wrong with her.

Th'res nods and gets up and is blushing more as he looks out at the dragon playing with his new friends as they attempt to teach the blue to walk on his tail like they do. No it doesn't work out well as he does more breach flops than any real walking but he is happy as those on the beach can feel from the colors and images that will wash over them from time to time. Th'res is rubbing his hand lightly saying "Yeah it was quiet a shock to me too, when rider D'ex and his blue Zynth first talked to me." He looks back at her and blushes more as he says "WE seem to keep messing up your quiet time.."

Its confusing for Safi so she is going to try to do her best to ignore the random colours that break in. "I… always imagined the runners could talk." A wash of sadness breaks the more happy feelings that Jed is projecting and she looks down at the shells in her basket like they will provide some kind of support for her. "It… it's okay." the messing up her quiet time. "Anyone is allowed…" on the beach. Safi can't claim that for herself.

Th'res nods at the answer and looks over to give her a smile, he is awkward and shy but tries to make a new friend anyway "WEll I am kinda glad we do, keep bumping into you.." he looks over at dragon playing and then nods about the runners talking "Yeah I can imagine, not that I have ever ridden a runner much less interacted with them out side of mucking the stalls.." he glances over at Safi and an idea forms as he asks "Do you know how to ride?"

With her eyes downcast she misses the smile. It's probably for the best anyway that she does. "They are nice." Runners that is, though other than riding them to the fields and back again she doesn't work with herds any more. "I do," the riding, she confirms. "A bad herder wouldn't..".

Th'res nods as he is clearly trying to get the courage up to ask her something so he will fidget a little bit before he is forced to swallow his pride and ask for help "Do you think, maybe if your not to busy that is you could give me and Jed some pointers? on the riding that is?" He doesn't know if it is against the rules or not but he has always been one to go to the source for answers to his problems.

Pure confusion writes onto Safi's face, her eyebrows drawing together as she shoots both Th'res and Jed looks that border on wondering if the two are quite sane. "Runners… are afraid of dragons." It's a pretty hard and fast rule among prey towards predator. "He.. um, is too big too." Safi says it super quietly and regretfully, though in the back of her mind she is wondering if maybe Th'res is a little touched.

Th'res chuckles and shakes his head "No I meant pointers on riding, see they tell us to mount and ride our dragons right now like runners. Only I have never ridden and well I end up more face down in the dirt than I do staying up." He rubs the back of his neck in a very sheepish grin, "Never mind it is silly to ask, you are probably way to busy anyway.." Jedameth hasn't tired out but the dolphins need to eat and do dolphin things so they will say good by to there new friend and the blue will lays about in the water for a while just relaxing.

Safi considers this as she fingers one of the prettier shells in her basket. Finally, "I… could show you on a runner?" Because she wouldn't even know where to start with a creature like Jed. She hasn't attempted to touch the dragon yet, for there is some extreme reluctance on her part after the recent fright caused by gold, bronze, and green dragons. "He… he couldn't come though. Maibay… She would be afraid."

Alright! Th'res will take what he can get "REally?! you wouldn't mind?" he says a little excitedly seems Jed might be sinking into the miners foundations. "And yes I can leave Jed with the others as he is wanted to nap in the sun after the afternoon meals… is that a good time for you?" he looks at her again with a hopeful smile.

His excitement is a little overwhelming but it brings a shy smile to her face anyways, one of the few she has managed to get to be real in a while. "I'm usually in the fields? I, um, can bring Maibey," not the runner she usually uses but a good old beast that has plenty of patience with the inexperienced. "It's a bit of a walk…" But if he is willing to meet her there, she is willing to try.

Th'res nods and grins as his blue exits the water and walks towards them he will stop a good few feet from Safi and gently places a whole schel that is multiple shades of blue and purple on the inside for her on the ground. Jedameth then backs up and moves up the beach to lay out and dry out on the rocks leaving Th'res to explain "He found you a shell, to say sorry for scaring you.."

Safi half shifts behind Th'res when Jed comes closer, not touching the Weyrling but making sure he is much more visible than she to the blue. When Jed stops a few feet away and leave a that shell it takes her a moment and Th'res' explination to understand the full meaning of the gesture. Once Jed has walked himself away a bit Safi emerges and steps forward to lift up the shell in one hand. "It.. it's very pretty." Glancing back with hints of shame in her eyes she'll apologize again, "I'm sorry."

Th'res tilts his head "why are you apologizing? you haven't done anything wrong." Unless she put a crawler on him then well there is going to be an issue. Jedameth closes his eyes and says something only for his rider before drifting off to dream land.

"I… I'm a little afraid of him." Very much ashamed to admit that, especially when the blue was sobkind as to bring her this pretty seashell that she is now cradling in one hand. "It's stupid." She knows it is stupid, but the fear remains all cuddled up with her other phobias that there is no need to go into right now.

Th'res blinks and looks over at the sleeping blue, he nods and says softly "The first time I met one I was afraid too, he pulled me out of the water in a storm. Couldn't go near them for six turns." he turns to look back at the young woman and gives her a kind understanding smile but stays where he stands on the beach not wanting to make her anymore skittish.

It is a little comforting to know that her reaction isn't completely unusual. Is doesn't lessen her shame since Jed hasn't been anything but kind to her. Gently she transfers the pretty seashell into her basket and lowers it so she is holding the basket on both hands. "I, guess… I should get back.c There is obvious reluctance in her tone. She is enjoying not being completely alone.

Th'res nods and says "If you have to, but your always welcome to stay even if it is a little distance that your comfortable with." He glances to his now sleeping blue ROCK on the beach that isn't getting moved anytime soon. He will look back to her saying "so tomorrow for runner lessons then?"

Safi glances back towards the rocks that Odesse was searching in earlier. "A little longer? There?" Maybe they'll even find the dolphineer's real bag so the beach can be clearer by a towel than it was before they came. He will get his confirmation of lessons for tomorrow too as she settles down, pulling out the shells to inspect them carefully against some judgement until it is late enough that she HAS to get back out face the wrath of the person keeping watch over the apprentice dorm.
