Clearing

The rise from sea to Weyr is made serene by a charming road winding sand-trodden from beach below to stonecut entrance above. The path wanders among a surprisingly green valley where purple flowers bloom in charmingly unfettered profusion. The meadows themselves are often in high demand as picnic areas, for dragons are not allowed to land in the narrow valley itself. No trees nor cliff lies near to shadow the clearing, however, and the intensity of sun can be unbearable for those not familiar with the humid drench of Southern's summers.

It is the nineteenth day of Spring and 80 degrees. As the night wears on, the storm blows itself out leaving the night clear and bright and full of stars.

Clear nights after a storm are always perfect for a walk, right? Yea, sure. At least, that's how Lorawyn justifies trekking out of the Weyr and towards the beach while it was fully dark out. The moons shine brightly overhead, lighting her path as she makes her way. It's not really a time that she expects anyone to be about, and perhaps a bit reckless even to be going alone, considering Southern's reputation with stabbings.

There is a certain charm to Caelisth's twin obsessions of star gazing and beach lounging, unfortunately at this time of the evening, Vani is really struggling to remember what exactly they are. "I know the stars are bright tonight…but the water is still going to be dark and cold." Vani doesn't sound at all enthusiastic as she meanders beside the bulk of the growing green. Even since the last time Lorawyn saw the pair, Caelisth has grown. Right now, she's going through a little chubby phase that heralds the development of some buxom curves once the latest additions to their shared PT is adjusted for. And because it is late, and a little dark, it takes until Vani and her green almost run over the wandering HEALER for them to realize they are not alone. "Oh shit sorry!" Identification can come later, first APOLOGIES!

It's not everyday that you get nearly run over by a baby dragon and her rider. Especially when you're walking all alone in the dark. There's a soft string of curses muttered as Lorawyn turns around to see the culprits, finding the voice familiar. "Oh. So—- Vani." There's a bit of a squint at Caelisth as her gaze falls on the green, much bigger than the last time she'd seen her. "Isn't it a bit late for you guys to be out?" Of course that's the first thing that comes out of her mouth.

"Isn't a bit dark for you to be wandering all alone?" Vani responds immediately even as Caelisth turns her blue-lantern eyes on the HEALER. The starstuff green also issues forth a gentle croon, hullo~. "I think the traders are all closed now…so what are you doing traipsing through the clearing?" Vani is totally NOT deflecting those awkward questions with awkward questions of her own. The rather large (but still not full grown) and majestic head of Caelisth lowers, giving Vani a full body nudge. "You never did get to meet Caelisth did you?" That quieter question is an honest reflection of the conversation going on between the pair. Among Vani's many new skills is the ability to have two conversations at once.

"Taking a walk," comes Lorawyn's response with an accompanied shrug, almost just as quickly. Eyes settle briefly on Caelisth as she nudges her lifemate before the healer's eyes lift to meet Vani's. "…I met her a few months ago. It was brief," she reminds her, voice almost just as quiet. While Lorawyn may have come near the weyrling barracks a few times, it's probably been when the weyrlings were out and about or something. Probably on purpose.

Vani will just correct her friend gently. "You saw her…I don't think you've met her." Because there is a difference, as Caelisth will gently demonstrate with the gentle swells of planet song. "She is interested in you. She goes through most of my memories if she isn't dragging me about in the depths of the night." It's a complaint in form only, Vani is well and truly besotted still. "Worked your way through my tab yet?" Does Vani need to top it up? These are things the greenling wants to know. She's also become quite proficient at dancing around things that are too difficult to explain to a certain immature (but maturing rapidly) mind.

There's only a slight pursing of Lorawyn's lips at Vani's correction, expression otherwise remaining neutral. An eyebrow lifts curiously at Vani's next. "Interested in me? Why?" Brows knit together in mild confusion. Why would any dragon be interested in her? Given that she'd been left on the sands? The question has her shaking her head. "I don't think so… You know I really don't drink much." Even in these last few months… the max she drinks is maybe two beers. And she only goes to the 'Kitten maybe 2 or 3 times a seven.

"She's interested in all of my friends." There is a subtle wink. "Although she's not quite bad mannered enough to push it with…that other guy." Who Caelisth is also interested in (but not as interested in as Vani is natch). "And they're funny little things, dragonets. They get notions. I'm not sure where she gets all of hers from. Although usually I can guess." Vani is a much gentler and accepting soul than Sorvani was. "You weren't the only one I set that up for, but I'm glad to hear you're using it." There is a smile even as Caelisth backs off a little, no words from her yet, just that subtle undercurrent of otherworldly song, easy to ignore. "Other than that. What is new for you?" SEE LOOK! Vani isn't asking any hard questions tonight.

Lorawyn almost opens her mouth to ask who that other guy is but then realizes quickly enough. Still, the fact that the dragonet is interested in her still baffles her, as seen by the continued furrowing of her brows. As far as the notions that the little green gets… Lorawyn’s response is just a simple curious, ‘huh’. “Thank you, though,” re: drink stuff. “New?” she echoes, gaze drifting away for a moment, “Nothing really… busy with infirmary stuff, as always. Coming up with new teas and the like.”

Clearly Caelisth’s interest in Lorawyn is one of those curious little baby notions that dragonets get. There is another gentle croon even as she angles her star-limned facebones appealingly. Caelisth will just get her face all up in ‘ere for some skritches pleasethankyou Lorawyn. “You’re welcome.” Vani answers with a hint of amusement. “I’m glad someone is drinking.” Because she is not. Sad. “Anything for aching muscles?” Vani asks hopefully, her hands going to massage arm muscles abused by firestone sack tossing (Which is almost as dirty as it sounds…but not in the fun way.)

There’s clearly some hesitation on the healer’s end as Caelisth brings her face closer to Lorawyn. It’s obvious enough what the dragonet wants but something still holds Lorawyn back from being completely comfortable with the idea of simply reaching out to do it. “You’ll be able to soon enough,” she tells her friend, glancing to her as she tears her gaze away from the young green for a moment, “It’s already been a few months since…” A hand finally reaches out tentatively to aim for those eyeridges. “For muscles? Sure. I don’t think I have anything pre-prepared but I can get one to you soon enough.”

“Hal makes a salve for me. It’s actually really helpful.” Perhaps if Vani speaks quickly enough while Caelisth is distracted she can sneak a little news about ‘that guy’ in as well. “But sometimes, her and Taliveth curl up…and I need something that lasts a bit longer…or goes a bit deeper to sleep.” But not actual drugs okay? “Soon.” Vani agrees with a little smile. “Just as soon as I get back home.” Which is approaching ever closer now. Caelisth’s croon continues, as does the subtle mental touch that accompanies it (Try dodging her mind now you’re touching Lorawyn!). There is a moment between the greenling pair as Caelisth shares her insights. “She doesn’t mind you touching her.” Obviously. “She’s mine. And I’m hers, but I think she’s trying to comfort you… in her own way.” Because Caelisth isn’t really a cuddly-cuddly type, for all that she shares Vani’s ‘friendly-ish’ nature.

Lorawyn nods automatically as Vani tells her about the salve, mind simultaneously trying to remember the formula for that particular tea even as she half-focuses on the tentative scritching. “That time’ll definitely come quicker than you expect. Though I suppose for you… it probably still isn’t quick enough.” There’s a bit of a wry smile for her friend there even as she feels that touch now, which causes her to withdraw her hand. A frown pulls at the edges of her lips before letting out a sigh. “I…don’t need comfort, I don’t think…” Her gaze softens a bit as she looks at Caelisth, “But… thank you.”

“The waiting is hard on us both.” And then because it is Vani…and Caelisth is that little bit older, she’ll slip in a slightly off-color joke. “Although I imagine IT is harder for him.” Winkwink. Sigh. “But she’s already grown so much…” There is a hint of sadness for the loss of baby-Caeli, but time marches on right? “She’ll be flying soon. And then after that, we’ll be flying together.” There are other things the weyrling pair can look forward too. “But how about when I graduate from Junior weyrling we go out sometime? Celebrate?” Get a bit tipsy and wee in the bushes just like old times!

The joke does draw out a small smile from Lorawyn, though it’s also accompanied by a slight roll of her eyes. The healer crosses her arms as she shifts her stance slightly, peering a bit curiously at Caelisth at the mention of flying. “Flying soon already?” Has it really been that long though? The suggestion gets a nod at least, “Sure. It’ll be my treat,” she adds. And let’s get it right; only Vani went to go wee in the bushes. Lorawyn did not.

Vani grins, it’s faintly predatory. “Are you sure about that? It’s been a while since I’ve had a drink…but I don’t imagine my capacity has lessened any.” Her inclination however, that may have changed. There is a quick glance back at her space green, before she reaches forward to squeeze one of Lorawyn’s hands. “It has been that long.” Her touch is gentle, but quick and she drops the hand once more. “It feels like a whole lifetime ago I was working and just being…” She shrugs, not that her life was full of significance before. “Perhaps it was.” Well Caelisth’s whole lifetime ago.

This time, Lorawyn’s eyerolling is very obvious. “Yes, I’m sure. You can drink to your heart’s content. My marks are just sitting around being useless anyway.” It’s not like the healer buys very many things to begin with, meaning a good amount of savings stashed away somewhere. The hand squeeze is returned with a light one, a small smile there for the gesture. “A whole lifetime, hm?” A momentary thoughtful expression passes, “For you, probably.” Because she does have Caelisth, after all. For Lorawyn? Not so much, though she doesn’t say as much out loud. “How’s…everyone else?” Meaning the other weyrlings, probably, since she doesn’t come across them often either.

Vani cocks her head as she considers. “We’re a lot better than we were in the first month.” There is a sense of her mentally running through a list of ‘people Lorawyn knows’. “A’ndi has his hands full, Don’t see much of D’ex. Va’os also has his hands full, but Tsiroth has settled heaps since he was hatched…Uh…There’s something creepy about Dora, I think it’s Ianayuth.” She nibbles on her lip as she tries to think of who else there is. “Nik’las and Moira seem to be doing fine. The twins think I hate them.” There’s a no big loss shrug there. “And yeah, we’re all just trying to do our best I think.” Although her assessment may be overly optimistic. “And any gossip I should know about?” Because the barracks are kind of isolated (For good reason most of the time).

For the most part, Lorawyn is quiet as Vani goes about listing off the people she actually knew from their Candidacy days, though a soft chuckle escapes with the tidbit on Dora. Not like they’d really interacted much back then for her to really comment on it. Another laugh for the mention of the twins, imagining the pair of them still getting in trouble even during weyrlinghood. “Glad to hear you’re all doing well, at least.” Overly optimistic or not, it still gives her a brief snapshot of what’s up with the rest of them. “Gossip… I’m not one for it, really… I doubt there’s anything that you don’t already know…” Stabbings, new Weyrwoman, etc. “Oh, D’ean and Luciana had a baby.”

“Oh?” See the news of stabbings and new weyrwomen have reached the barracks. It’s kinda important for the weyrlings to know that stuff…but the more personal news has Vani’s brows rising. “When he told me…I thought they’d just found out.” So Vani knew about the pregnancy. “Luciana and the baby are fine?” It is to her credit that that was her first question. And then the other news kind of filters through. “I’ve met Weyrwoman Bailey. It was a little awkward making small talk with her at the party.” (#Nolettinggo). “I guess… even if you stay in the same place, change is kind of inevitable right?” There is a sad little sigh, while Southern seems stable now…it was dicey enough that even the weyrlings were aware of the dire straights the weyr was in.

“Yea, I didn’t even really know until Luciana had the baby so it was a bit of a surprise for me, too.” Lorawyn doesn’t really deal with baby births too often, after all. Not that Vani knows. “Yes, they’re doing fine. Healthy baby boy,” in case Vani was curious about the gender of said baby. “Oh?” A slight influx in the healer’s tone at the mention of Vani’s encounter with the new Weyrwoman, but that’s as much curiosity as she’ll display on that subject. “Change is always inevitable, no matter where you are. Even if it isn’t so obvious every time.” Another small, wry smile for that.

“D’ean must be so relieved.” Vani sounds genuinely happy for the bluerider, even if she doesn’t share why. Although given that was something she shared with the healer the first time they met, perhaps Lorawyn can work it out. “At some stage I’ll have to catch up with them.” She’d make a mental note, but you know her mental notes aren’t private anymore. “I suppose…” If Vani sounds dubious it is because she is. “Although I’d imagine you’d be pretty offended if change occured in the infirmary.” It is a tease, and a rather lame one as Caelisth gives her another nudge. This time it is impatient. “You don’t happen to be going to the beach?” Vani asks, a brow quirking even as she swats at the muzzle of her beloved. Not now, mummy is talking!

Lorawyn has a good memory, remember? Of course she knows the why. “He seemed happy enough when I checked in on them the next day after I heard about it. He’d also gotten injured from Threadfall so…” she’d had to check to make sure his bandaging was okay and all that. “I’m sure they’d like that.” Though she can’t really speak for them… “I think Master Varden would be more than offended than me, in that case,” because she’s not really the one to deal with the more major repercussions if that any major changes did occur in the infirmary. “I was heading there, yes” the beach, that is, “Why?”

Vani makes a face. “Well that kind of sucks.” About D’ean’s face. But thats about all the gossip she’s allowed to engage in before there are more nudges from Caelisth’s face. “Ugh. All riiight!” Vani mutters before grandly gesturing to that path that leads to the beach (Perhaps they should have been walking all this time? Hindsight!) “We are also going to the beach. Can we walk with you?” Vani asks politely, Caelisth is just going to assume the answer is yes…because she’s already making her way down the path. “Flying cannot come soon enough!” Vani complains before linking her arm with one of Lorawyns and dragging them both after the darkly starred green. The conversation turns to less serious matters and all in all it is a pleasant end to an unexpected meeting.
