« It will be alright, my Keelie. »

Keelie sat upon the warm rock, watching her toe appear and disappear beneath the calm surface of the water. The motion was soothing. She felt the touch of the breeze on her skin, lifting her hair.

One last fight with Vella, and her sisters had left, disappearing into the trees: back to the Oona tribe. The sickness of the grubs and dying of plants had been enough to convince the eldest that the curse was upon the Weyr. Keelie had tried to tell them that it wasn't a curse, that the Weyr was doing everything they could to get to the bottom of the mystery, and that she had every faith they would discover it soon. But it wasn't enough to convince them to stay. Not that her two closest wildling kin were living in the Weyr, but the home they had fashioned was near enough.

Keelie swallowed the lump in her throat. She remembered the last looks on their faces: the icy disapproval of Vella, and Kneesa's sadness, the disappointment and fear in her eyes. Maybe there had been regret too. Frustrated as she had been with Vella, Keelie had felt a pull to go with them, to go home, back to their tribe, to say hello. But she couldn't. Not with Gruffith. The Weyr was her home now. The tribe would not accept her, and she would not risk the harm that might come to her dragon.

She felt a tear slip down her cheek, tasted it as it slipped between her lips. She had taken such comfort in her sisters being close, even if she did not see them often. Stealing cookies for Kneesa from the kitchens had become a habit she didn't want to break. And now…

« It will be alright, my Keelie. »

The gentle reassurance of Gruffith reached her like a comforting wave.

She rose from her rock, chin set, her eyes sad with solemn contemplation. More than anything, she wanted the reassuring arms of her weyrmate, to hold her close. "I know." She picked her way along the familiar path, back towards the shipweyr she shared with M'noq, pausing to gather flowers along the way.
