In dark morn and dusky eve fog lies grim and humid against the still waters of Azov Sea. Only the noontime sun burns away the concealing clouds of man's height, revealing that which lies beneath the mist- an awe-inspiring stone pier that stretches far into the inland sea, to the east of the line of orderly boat-slips for the locals and larger, open spaces for transport ships. Fishermen are often as common as seagulls upon the pier's length in particular, ill-concealed and ill-clothed in the loose dun homespun of Southern's natives.
It is the twenty-fifth day of Autumn and 73 degrees. A steady rain pounds the weyr in the dark hours, flooding the bowls and turning dry dirt to mud. It is a moonless night.
Sometime in the nebulous hours of darkness, when most people should be fast asleep in their beds, Odesse is not. Well, she’s in her bed, for the moment. Tossing and turning. Trying to get back to sleep but something’s just… off. And so into the dim light she stares, listening to the steady drip drip drip of the autumn drizzle.
It’s either not long into the bout of insomnia or forever into it, that the peel of very familiar bell has the dolphineer bolting up and dash towards the door. Out of necessity, it’s not very far from the dolphineers’ complex to the water and she covers the ground quickly. Quick enough to catch the chorus of calls from dolphins eagerly yelling about the ‘Bad Bad Storm! Bad, bad, baaaaaad storm coming!’ The apprentice on watch duty is beyond relief to have a journeyman right there when he turns around, but he won’t be for long. There’s procedures in place for this and luckily Odesse knows them like the back of her hand.
“Wake Lavak.” Although the senior dolphineer is probably already on his way down to find out what the ruckus was about. “The harbormaster, the weyrleader, weyrwomen, starcraft. The office in the seacraft stone complex. And make sure somebody brings klah.” Lots and lots of klah. They’re going to need it. And for now, Odesse is going to get more details. Like from what direction, where and how long do they have.
Nice vig! Of course the warning would come in the middle of the night, for maximum chaos!
Hope you don't mind if I put a TP tag on this.
Not at all! I just couldn't find what the TP tag was when I posted.
Plus, +weather said it was a MOONLESS night as well. For ever more confusion.
