"After all, we're neighbors now."

Lake Shore

Sprawled out beyond the Weyr proper's hustling activity and ambling roads, the cool, blue paradise of the Weyr lake promises escape from the oppressive hammer of Igen summer's cruel climes; the asymmetrical, sandy white shores hook delicately around the deceptively still waters running deep and sure, greedy peninsulas reaching white fingers stretching in crooked lines towards its center. A sturdy shack, weather-beaten and brown as cured leather, resides in isolated splendor upon one such finger, screened shelving offering a variety of brushes and fragrant oils housed in colorful tureens. Out beyond a small and dusty paddock ringed by a white fence, a long rocky pier stabs out into the lake, providing a panoramic view of the Weyr itself, while the southern shores provide varied shrubs and grassed for the massed herds in their pens.

If there's one thing Onari absolutely cannot complain about, it's the easy access to the lake shore that living in a weyr affords her. Cooling off with a swim, relaxing on the sand, giving a quick rinse to something that needs it - all accomplished by a relatively quick jaunt out the door and down the steps. Today, it seems that something similar to the latter is what the newly weyrmated trader is involved in. She comes down the steps from Josvikuth's ledge with small kettles in each hand, wending her way down to the water's edge to set them down before spreading out a small blanket. Apparently, she's not intending to go back up right away.

While the advantages of being near the lake shore are not lost to Selaine, she enjoys the easy access of not requiring dragonback more so for the sake of her children. With one twin in her arms, she strolls out from within her weyr with the nanny in tow with the second, and then there's Thesrov running for the shore, past Onari and her blanket. Akitith leaps from the ledge and lands in the shallows, all the better to keep an eye on the active toddler. A smile lifts the corner of the greenrider's lips as she spies Onari, having seen the trader come down those steps. "Onari!" she calls out brightly as she approaches, gaze flickering to her son to make sure that Akitith's babysitting properly.

First there's a sprinting toddler breezing past, causing Onari to look up from her blanket-straightening to squint after him. Then there's a green dragon splashing down to corral the little one, and Onari can't help but chuckle at the sight. She's fairly certain she knows whose it is now, the voice that calls her name shortly thereafter confirming her guess. Straightening, she turns to find Selaine and her nanny coming along in Thesrov's wake. "Good morning, Selaine!" she answers, grinning as she notes the babies. "I'd heard you had them but wasn't sure if you'd emerged again yet. Congratulations!"

There's a fair amount of giggling coming from the waters as Thesrov attempts to run around Akitith, making it a game. The green flicks her tail in amusement as she uses the length of her body to curl around him, making a tiny toddler cove so that he can't escape. "Good morning," she returns with a wide smile when she sees where Onari's gaze goes. "Nearly two months now. I'm already back on duty but today's a rest day." She pauses just a few paces away from the blanket. "Thank you." Her smile is tender as she looks down at Jonaxi. "I see that you've moved." A glance back at the weyrs just behind her.

Dark brows hike a bit before Onari gives a self-deprecating little laugh, shaking her head. "I feel like I've been caught in a whirlwind. I keep missing things, though I suppose I'm still adjusting to the change in living and such." Glancing back at the weyrs herself for a moment, she looks back to Selaine, beaming, her cheeks slightly flushed. "I'm weyrmated to Zh'ain now," she explains. "We didn't make much of it. Or he didn't; we doesn't like to announce his life to the world. The caravan had a little celebration, but mama wouldn't let us get away without it." Close-knit as they all are.

An understanding smile curls Selaine's lips at Onari's reaction. "I know the feeling all too well, I assure you." She rocks Jonaxi in her arms a bit as the infant fusses, one hand moving to smooth back fine strands of hair. Looking up to see the flush on Onari's cheeks has the greenrider tilting her head slightly before her smile widens. "Well congratulations to you as well! I guess we'll be neighbors from now on. I'll apologize in advance if you happen to hear the children crying at night…" This time there's a crooked smile for the trader.

"Oh, I'm used to it," Onari says, giving a little shake of her head as she drifts closer to see the baby Selaine holds. "My niece was in the habit for a while, and there were a couple other new babies to contend with after I came back from the last Hatching, too." Another look up toward Josvikuth's ledge is given, thoughtful. "Would it really carry that far? Stone is so stranger. Sometimes it makes things louder, then blocks other sounds." She's not quite used to it yet. She returns her gaze to the baby, he gaze softening. "What are their names?"

Selaine turns to look at the weyrs again as well, considering. "I'm not so sure. I haven't had any complaints yet? But Anahera usually quiets them pretty quickly…" She glances back at the nanny, a stern expression there as always even as she gives Onari a nod. When the trader is close enough, she smiles, "This is Jonaxi, the other is Lenali. Would you like to hold her?" Her arm shifts, offering the baby for Onari to hold if she chooses, but keeping her grip steady so the infant has no chance of being dropped.

Onari gives Anahera a warm smile and a nod in return, unfazed by the stern expression. She's seen and been subjected to her share of those throughout her life. "I'd love to!" she answers Selaine's offer, and relieves the greenrider of her daughter with practiced gentleness. "Hello, Jonaxi," she coos softly, stroking a pudgy cheek lightly with one fingertip before offering it for the baby to inspect. "They're such pretty names…and pretty in general, of course."

The transfer is done with relative ease and Selaine relaxes her arms down by her sides as she looks at how Onari holds the infant. Jonaxi coos gently in the trader's arms, blue eyes wide and bright as they look up at her, then becoming distracted by the finger. A small hand reaches up to grasp it and then attempts to pull it towards her open mouth. "Thank you." Her gaze is tender as she places a gentle hand on Jonaxi's head. "A pity I can't spend more time with them now that I'm back on duty… but luckily I can see them every night, now that I've got this convenient weyr."

Onari offers a little resistance as Jonaxi pulls on her finger and diverts the motion into a boop on the nose. "Aye, it's convenient alright," Onari agrees. "I can't imagine how it would be dealing with them and Thesrov and having to live up high. Although…" She gives a small frown of consternation. "Does the wind ever bother you sometimes? Or them, for that matter. It's just so…eerie on some days when the weather is up. It sounds like howling. I've never heard anything like it anywhere else."

"It was hard just with Thesrov when I had a weyr up there… I had to be very careful." Imagine adding the twins to that as well? No way. Selaine frowns just at the thought of it. "The wind?" There's a moment where the greenrider looks a bit puzzled before, "Oh. It doesn't, actually. The way our weyr's shaped keeps the wind out for the most part, thankfully. And the children sleep in the inner weyr so it doesn't quite get to them. I do hear it some nights on my way back from a late sweep though."

"It doesn't get into our weyr, it just…seems to wail about not being able to," Onari clarifies with a little smirk. "I'm sure we'll find some way to lessen it. Though having a big bronze dragon in the way most nights seems to help. Not that I'm ever going to tell Josvikuth he's a fantastic windbreak." She has a feeling it would be a jab to the bronze's pride. She sifts gently at the fine wisps of hair on Jonaxi's head with a soft smile before passing the baby back to her mother. "It's been interesting learning to work from a weyr, too," she notes, dipping one of the kettles into the water once her hands are free. "Everything has to revolve around the dragon in residence, which is fine, of course. It's just a far cry from dealing with livestock." No comparison whatsoever, honestly.

"Oh." The clarification has Selaine looking a bit sheepish for a moment before she clears her throat. Then there's a soft chuckle when Onari refers to Josvikuth as a windbreak. "Probably best that you don't," the greenrider agrees with a wide smile. Arms reach out automatically when Jonaxi is passed back over, cradling the infant with ease in her arms. "I wonder how the dragons would feel being compared, even a little, to livestock." Akitith rumbles from where she lays in shallow water, expression her opinion on that. "Other than that, everything else going well for you?"

Onari's eyes widen a little bit at Selaine's words, and she looks quickly over at the rumbling green dragon in the water. "No comparison at all, Akitith!" she calls with a laugh. "Livestock is food to you, after all." Now it's her turn to look a bit sheepish as she returns her attention to Selaine. "Yes, though…it's hard not to look at 'everything else' outside the context of…this, you know?" She makes an expansive gesture around them, then hitches a shoulder in a little shrug. "I suppose part of me feels a little bit suspended between two worlds. I'm still a trader, but I live here now. I feel like I'm figuring out how to strike a balance. And maybe that's just how things will be for a while until a clearer road presents itself." If it presents itself.

Akitith's eyes whirl a tranquil opalescent blue as they focus on the trader as Selaine laughs lightly. "Her opinion exactly," the greenrider relays with some amusement in her tone. With Onari's next, Selaine's gaze drifts about them. "I think things will fall into place naturally… though I'm kind of borrowing the advice from someone else." Her lips curl into a crooked smile. "I can't say I was much for the phrase in the beginning but…" She looks back down at her daughter, fingers brushing one cheek lightly before shrugging. "I guess you can say I'm a believer of it now."

"Not a believer…in weyrmating?" Onari asks as she brings the other kettle to the water and fills it. "Oh, you mean of things falling into place. Aye. Well…I suppose the thing is we hear that, but we usually have our own ideas about what it means. So there's always the risk that when things do fall into place, they either fall short…or exceed our expectations." With a little smile, she gestures to Jonaxi. "I'm guessing yours were exceeded. My own largely have been. The past few Turns have had their share of disappointments, but with Zh'ain…" Her cheeks color again, very lightly. "Well. I certainly can't complain. Only adjust. And we Reika are good at that."

Selaine's eyes widen when Onari takes her meaning as weyrmating and quickly shakes her head. Weyrmating definitely had never been an issue for her, especially considering she has a weyrmate of her own. When Onari gestures to her daughter, the greenrider looks back down with a tender smile. "Yes, I would say so." She looks back up, an expression of understanding there even as she chuckles softly with the blush that she sees. "Well I'm happy for you. It's certainly an adjustment… if there's ever anything I can help you with, don't hesitate to ask. I'd be more than happy to do what I can. After all, we're neighbors now."

"And if you ever need anyone else to help watch them," the little ones, "you can always ask, since I'm right there. And maybe I'm just slightly interested in seeing how Zh'ain would cope with having a child running around, even for just a candlemark or two." Onari has a somewhat sly look to go along with that, but it's playful in nature. "Anyway, I'd better get these back upstairs. I have some things to soak for dye." And she needs to get them where Josvikuth won't get offended by the smell. Or accidentally knock them over somehow.

"I'll certainly keep that in mind. I'm sure Anahera and my…" How was she supposed to refer to L'xan's mother since they were weyrmated? Was mother-in-law appropriate? She'd ask him later. "L'xan's mother will need a break every now and then." Selaine looks back at Anahera before bouncing Jonaxi lightly in her arms with a light chuckle. "Thesrov's usually pretty well-behaved… but all three of them at once might be a bit of a challenge." Unless Onari's totally used to that. And as the trader excuses herself, Selaine nods. "It was nice talking to again, Onari. I'm sure we'll run into each other more often from now on."

"No doubt," Onari says with a grin as she hefts the filled kettles in both hands. She leaves the blanket, apparently intending to return at some point. "It's good to have neighbors I already know. Almost like the caravan. See you soon!" With that, she starts back toward the stairs leading up to the Josvikuth's ledge, moving carefully so as not to spill what she came out for.
