How much can you tell a weyrling about bad things that are going on?

Totally Unimportant Minor Holding

This place is so minor compared to the rest of Pern that it's practically not even on the map. Yet, it hopes to someday be important. Small buildings scatter the area, presumably living spaces. There's one large one that likely serves as a communual eating and storage spot. It's not that exciting, sort of boring. But they've built a large square with a beautiful fountain and they're cultivating some really impressive gardens. One of these days, this place will be something.

They've also spent a lot of time on the docks, which are ambitious in how large they are. Usually there are just fishing vessels tied up here. But today? There are some really nice ones. Not to mention the temporary stalls and tents that have been set up along the beach, vendors selling their wares to the gather's attendents. Also there's food aplenty, music and the typical bonfire. They're hoping to make their mark on the world tonight. Aren't they going to be surprised?

M'noq and Keelie are holed up in this nameless, pissant holding. Ravaith is under care of a dragonhealer for a torn wingsail, and Keelie is under care of a healer for a conk on the head. M'noq has made an ass of himself all day, going around and interrogating holders who, even if they aren't exactly innocent, probably had nothing to do with the kidnapping of the young Hold heir Rylov. It's evening, he's annoyed and exausted, and he sits down to write a letter.

Hey sis,

First off, Keelie and I are fine. After all my talk about how dangerous Igen is and how you need to be careful, it turns out that Southern—well, a five-Turn-old boy was kidnapped, Keelie was almost kidnapped, and Ravaith's wing

M'noq stops writing. He sighs, folds the page in half as scrap, then starts again on a fresh page.

Hey sis,

Remember when I was talking about wanting to take a vacation? Well, as they say, be careful what you wish for

Again, hesitation. Fold. New page. Deep breath, exhale. Try again.

Hey sis,

I was so happy to see you and your Kuramaeth the other day. Ravaith was utterly charmed by her. When she's older, she's sure to be a real heart-stealer. Keelie loved seeing you guys too, and Gruffith has such a thing for the babies. Unfortunately, we're going to be tied up here in Southern for a bit, so I'm not sure when we'll next come for a visit. I'm sure you'll have your hands full with feeding, bathing, and oiling—sure, I remember what what was like. Take good care of your girl, and you remember to get some sleep too.

This is a strange by-the-by, but I noticed at the Hatching you were talking with a white-haired kid on the Sands. I don't think he Impressed, but do you know if he's still kicking around Igen? What's his name? Do you know if he has a brother who looks a lot like him? Any info you could give me so I could talk to the kid, I'd appreciate it. Southern's got a clutch hardening on the Sands as we speak, and I'm not above sniping good candidates.

Yours,

M.

M'noq rereads the letter twice, decides it has to be good enough, and sends it off via Fancy Pete. Someday he'll most likely tell his sister the whole story, but it won't be just yet.
