Galleries

Though occasionally cleaned by ambitious (or neurotic) drudges or weyrbrats being disciplined, the lack of Eggs over the last several Turns has led to the Galleries falling into a state of disrepair. Sand can be found…well, everywhere. On the benches, under the benches, on the railings and walkways. There is also the random tidbit leftover from people who've wandered into the gathering place since the last cleaning. A random bit of cloth here, a bit of something that might have been a carving-in-progress once there.

It's a gloomy day in Igen, clouds obscuring the sky and Rukbat's shiny rays. It is, at least, getting warmer, though that is little consolation for the brutal heat that is sure to come once summer rolls around. Still, Selaine is up, bright and early and finding her way to the hatching caverns only a few days after the clutching. As it is, the galleries are fairly empty this morning as the greenrider tops the stairs. Selaine takes a seat near the one of the benches closest to the ledge separating the galleries from the sands and stares a bit blankly at the mound of eggs below.

Some days, the gloom is a nice change from the glaring sun that necessitates squinting or a hat or mask or scarf so much of the time. Onari is appreciative of the fact today, the cloudcover also lending her a sense of calm that's a welcome contrast to the comparitive bustle of the past few days (for her). The opportunity to have a quiet, proper look at the eggs for a change brings her at an easy walk from breakfast at the caravan grounds. The quietude beyond the cavern entrance has her minding the weight of her steps, though seeing the scant scattering of people in the galleries eases her caution a bit. Selaine, being near the front as well as familiar both in general and from the clutching, is who she quietly drifts toward. "Good morning, greenrider Selaine," she greets quietly with an amiable smile. "It seems we had the same idea."

Selaine's face is a mask, emotions unreadable as she stares down at those colorful eggs. It's hard to say what she might be thinking. Remembering that day, some Turns ago, that she Impressed? A possibility. The relative quiet is comforting, to say the least, and so when footsteps fill the silence, the greenrider turns her attention to find Onari coming in from the entrance. The smile received is returned with a similar one from Selaine. "Good morning, Onari. And so it seems," she replies, chuckling softly. "And please, just Selaine is fine. No need to be so formal."

"I'll remember that from now on," Onari says with a dip of her head, settling onto the bench to Selaine's right. "Just habit, I suppose. They certainly are an…interesting lot," she notes, looking fully out at the spread of eggs now. "Some are hard to look at, and I can't really say why."

"Please do," Selaine adds, offering the other woman a wider smile before her attention turns to the eggs upon Onari's comment. A light laugh escapes her, "Indeed they are." As for Onari's ponderings. "Hmm well… I would likely say it has to do with the mixture of colors on some of them?" Blue eyes squint as her gaze drifts over the more colorful ones. "Some colors are just naturally more pleasing to the eye whereas others … aren't." To put it simply.

As Selaine relates her take on the eggs, Onari finds herself squinting at a few in particular out of reflex. "But a few of them look like they can't make up their minds. They seem like they have all colors all at once, or no colors, depending on the light or the angle you're looking at it from or whether or not you're standing on your head…" Not that she would actually try that. With a rueful chuckle, she pulls her eyes away to give them a break and looks to Selaine. "You Impressed before F'in and not with him, aye? It's hard to remember sometimes."

"That's why it's hard to look at," Selaine says, looking away from the eggs and up instead at the gold that hovers protectively nearby. "Our brain has trouble processing it… probably. Too confusing. I think we just like to lean toward the simpler things." There's a laugh from the greenrider there. Does she mean just the eggs or everything? As for the question of when she Impressed, Selaine nods. "Yes. Though I can't exactly remember the timeline at this point."

Onari grins for the sentiment, giving a little shake of her head. "Aye. Yet we also seem to like complicating things for ourselves despite that. We're a bunch of walking contradictions sometimes, I think." The answer to her question garners a nod. "Do you remember what Akitith's egg looked like? Or were things too crazy on the Sands for you to notice?"

"True enough," Selaine agrees readily, chuckling softly. "Akitith's egg?" The greenrider repeats, brows furrowing in thought as she tries to recall. "I… vaguely remember it. I think it reminded me of the night sky…" But it was certainly true that everything had been a blur at the time. Selaine shakes her head at the unclear memory. "Or something."

Smirking, Onari gives a single nod of understanding, absently tugging at a fold in her skirt to change the fall of it over her knees. "Considering how excited everyone gets up here during a hatching, I can't imagine how it must be down there…hello." Something on the ground catches her eye, and she slips forward off the bench to crouch down for a moment. Something is pulled from the stripe of dust built up against the divide between the galleries and the ledge that separates them from the Sands, and she rises to sit again, brushing it off. "Hmmm. A Winecraft mark," she notes, turning it over in her palm. "A half mark. Someone likely isn't happy to have lost this." Suddenly thoughtful, she peers groundward again, past Selaine down the length of the benches. "I wonder…"

"In the beginning… it's just nerves. And then everything is a blur… you don't even notice everyone else looking on. All you see are the eggs before you and your fellow Candidates," Selaine recalls, feeling the nostalgia wash over her. The distraction Onari finds also catches Selaine's attention and she shifts her attention to watch her. Curious blue eyes fall on that mark, nose wrinkling slightly from the dust that rises from Onari's actions. "It might've been there for a while, what with all that dust."

Onari is listening, honestly. "No wonder it's so hard getting anyone's attention down there," she says, proving it as she tucks the mark into her pouch. Finders keepers and all that. She rises and turns to lean upon the railing, still paying attention to Selaine but also making a slow scan of the ground beneath the lip of the benches. "How worried were you that the babies might not mind their claws?" she asks, folding her arms as she points her toe to run along the thin film of sand there.

"I don't think it's something we really thought about or even considered," Selaine replies, tilting her head slightly as she thinks. "There was a lot to think about as a weyrling, though so…" The smile on the greenrider's lips is sheepish as she shrugs. "Did F'in ever talk to you about his weyrlinghood?"

"Not really," Onari replies, ceasing her idle perusal of the dust for now and pushing away from the railing enough to turn around and look at the eggs again. "Granted, I never really asked, but as you said, there was a lot to think about as a weyrling. I didn't want to jump in the middle of it." Sighing, she lets her gaze fall upon an odd, dark egg that seems distant from the rest in more ways than one. However, it's questionable whether or not she's actually looking at it right now. "I don't talk to him enough anymore," she notes, regret limning her tone. "We're both so busy…but that's not really an excuse. I write to him to try making up for it, but it's not the same."

"Ah, I see…" Selaine's gaze lingers on Onari for a moment, considering the other woman when she sighs before she turns it on the eggs as well. There's a slight frown on her lips as Onari continues, "To be honest, I haven't really seen him much lately either… Then again, I guess it's because our wings' schedules are so different but still… " Another shrug. "I guess if we really wanted to, we'd make the time, right? But that also just goes with everything else in life…"

More nodding from the Reika woman, this time more slowly. "We can make the time, but it also depends on catching him, and I never know where he is or what he's doing from one candle to the next. Of course, with Rhakanth out there," on the Sands, "so much, I think we may be able to corner him a bit more easily." Smirking now, Onari turns her gaze to Selaine, folding her arms along the top of the railing and leaning there. "You and I should do that some evening. See if we can steal him away for a drink or something. Or maybe we can bring food for him and Diem and sweet talk our way out there to visit with them both. Er. Maybe." She eyes the Sands again - Zsaviranth in particular. Would they even be allowed? It occurs to her that it might be a bold thing to attempt; she's not of the Weyr herself, after all.

"He is different. A bit slippery," Selaine agrees, laughing lightly. "But yes, I think these next few months will make it a bit easier to corner him." Don't mind the mischievous glint behind those blue eyes of hers. "I'll have to pass on the drinks, but I'm sure the pair of them won't decline to some food and company… I don't know Diem too well but I guess it'll be an opportunity to get to know her." It's then that she pushes herself off the bench. "It's about time for me to get some food though… I think, so I'll be heading out. Come find me when you want to ambush F'in." The greenrider drops a wink for the Reika trader just before disappearing beyond the entryway.
