Beach

An eerie mirror, the glass-quiet Sea of Azov: the clear waters stretch along the dark-pebbled shores, and along this narrow beach. Here the faintest lap of waves belies the calm beyond; here the rocks have been ground down into finest, softest sand - those observant would mark upon the similarity between it and the sands of the hatching grounds. The soft sand soaks up summer sunlight as a sponge; painfully hot during the warmer months, it is only truly pleasant at wintertime. Rocks rise to east and west, lichen-limned and green against the abyssal darkness of stone.

It's been a busy, busy day and it's only an hour or so after dawn. All the alarm bells have rung, news passes through the dragon-wire and soon the Weyr is all jumping to emergency mode. And the harbor has been a catalyst of the activity. What ships are close enough have already come in to safe harbor. Seacrafters are busy battening down the hatches and getting the vessels ready to ride out the coming storm. And as for the other members of the aquatic crafts, the dolphineers have been in motion all morning. Several pods from around the area have swam in and currently the journeymen are amassing on the shore. There are supplies around them and a green and her rider waiting nearby. Odesse is one of those in the midst of a very thorough repacking of knapsack like her life might depend on it.

HONK! MOO! The regulars of the beach and ocean are probably reasonably familiar with these particular dragon calls by now. And the uneven trompy-stompy gait that follows them, and the large dragon-paw prints gouged into the sand. Yes, it is Taliveth, with his big googly-eyes scanning the crowds for a certain someone. A beach bunny of special importance. When he spots the blonde amidst her packing, the warship brown HONKS again and stomps along faster, beelining it towards Odesse. Trailing behind is his rider with a bulging pack slung over his back and a look of vague annoyance resting upon his features. A'ndi is all suited up— there are Ocelot duties to be done in preparation for IMPENDING DOOM. But sometimes Tali's needs must be met before anything else can get done. « Miss Odesse! I've brought provisions for your difficult journey!!!!! » The volume is dialed down, but the words are still full of dancing galactic light.

Those sounds are indeed familiar to those who are practically residents of the beach, which is probably why many of the folks, including Odesse don't look up from their packing. The dolphins however, are a different story. They may have been the ones who sparked off this whole beehive of chaos (or the Red Star and it's effect on gravity causing crazy weather patterns or whatever… who is really counting?), but that doesn't mean they're somber about it. They seem rather delighted about the whole thing. There's even more splashing and jumping than usual and a few calling out to Taliveth when the warship makes his appearance. Odesse does look up, rather startled, at the direct address blinking at Taliveth and then his rider. She rubs quickly at her eyes, just a little bit sleepy from being up so early. "What provisions?" She does at least give the brown a smile, although followed with a dubious look to A'ndi that she tries to mostly hide from the dragon.

A'ndi sees that look, and he shares it, and he shrugs. HE DOESN'T GET IT EITHER, ODESSE. Taliveth is an enigma pretzel wrapped in mystery chocolate with a caramel drizzel of pure ridiculousness. The brown's squishy nose descends to whuffle affectionately at the dolphineer, and then swivels to nudge at his rider. Go ooooon. With a put-upon sigh, A'ndi plunks the pack down heavily and pulls it open. Right off the top he picks up a thermos. "Soup. Wherry and noodles." The other hand grabs a blanket that was folded right underneath, tugging it and floofing it out. It's blue and black flannel with… cat hair. "Blanket with extra cat hair so you don't get cold." Both are held out with an impatient shake. Take them. Take the things. There is more. Meanwhile, Taliveth turns to the dolphins, his maw opening in a toothy grin. « HELLO, my moist comrades! You are all SO VERY BRAVE! I BELIEVE IN YOU! »

Odesse is befuddled, perplexed, and probably just a little bit discombobulated as she takes the thermos. The floofed out blanked though, A'ndi's just going to get to keep holding. She's got her arms full of… the thermos. It clearly takes two hands to hold when you wrap both arms around it. A'ndi and Odie aren't the only ones with the dubious looks. That greenrider over there is shaking his head and probably doing quite a good impression of a sailor at the moment about how there's enough crap that Gratith is going to have to carry. "Well, it looks like you all are also going out. Why don't you just keep that for me? I don't think we have room…" Although she doesn't look like she's about to give up that soup. It's been a long time since breakfast. Taliveth gets quite a few squees from said comrades. They believe in themselves too! And him. But mostly, "TALIIIIII! Come Swim? Swim?"

« OF COURSE! A swim for good luck! I- » Taliveth's crater-patterned body starts to lurch forward, a paw raising, but he stops short and turns suddenly to face Odesse again. A soft, sad beep-boop of a little satellite floats around the dolphineers brainspace. « But. It's going to be so cold. You need the blanket. You need to take it. Do you not like it? Is it the wrong blanket? » Somehow, illogically, it almost looks like his bulgey, uneven eyes are filling with tears. His mushy face becomes so sorrowful. A'ndi glances quickly between the dragon and Odesse and shakes the blanket again. Quietly, out of the corner of his mouth, "Just take the damn blanket. Stash it somewhere. I'll get it later."

"But how can I swim with a blanket???" Odesse should be quicker thinking than this, but it's not every day you have dragons insisting you take their cat-fur covered blankets and especially not when you've done it on approximately three hours of sleep. "It's a lovely blanket. Won't ye keep it safe for me, Tali?" She'll shameless bat those eyelashes of her's at slightly weepy brown. Does this work? As for A'ndi's suggestion of just stashing it, she looks down at her swim suit and the rather barren section of beach they're on. It looks like everything around them is in the midsts of being packed up and stashed on their supply transport rider. "If ye haven't noticed, I ain't exactly got much stashing spots…"

"That's the problem with beaches," A'ndi grumbles. Because you can't.. stash… blankets? Luckily for them though, the eyelashes do their job. « Okay… if you promise to stay warm… » But now his eyes are locked onto Odesse, watching with great concerned intensity as the blanket is re-packed and the other items are brought out. One appears to be a hunting knife of sorts in a leather sheath, and the other is a rubbery squeaky toy wherry. "In case you need to kill something. And this-" The toy is squeaked for EMPHASIS. "-in case you get bored-" The brownrider cuts himself off, frowning in confusion, and he turns to speak to his dragon, "Why is she going to be bored? It's a storm."

"I will." Odesse solemnly nods as she promises to keep warm. As for the problem with beached, they could possibly bury the blanket, but then there'd be the whole problem of remembering where they buried it. And with the storm coming in, it might be a whole different beach than what they left by the time either of them could look for the blanket. Better A'ndi keep it. Fish might miss the blanket. The knife does have Odesse's eyes lighting up a bit, even more so than when she saw the soup as she makes some grabby hands for the blade. Once handed over, there are some comparisons to be made and well, Taliveth's knife is apparently deemed superior, although she's not using the leather sheath it came in. She has the waxed sheath on her calf for that. "Never know when a knife might come in handy." As for the wherry, she can't help her eyebrows from creeping up so far. "I guess the dolphins could use it now?" She shrugs and looks over her shoulder to the pod that's currently trying to keep themselves occupied with a competition of who can do the highest flip.

"… I'll need that knife back when you're done with it." He'll hold onto the sheath in the meantime. Taliveth is very pleased at Odesse's approval of the blade and he warbles happily. Look, he's helping! A'ndi nods at the suggestion for the rubber wherry's fate and offers it up to Taliveth. "Go, you know, lift their spirits. With this thing." Surprisingly daintily, Taliveth plucks the toy up oh so carefully in his mouth, and then he's off gallumphing to the dolphins. « LOOK GUYS I GOT A SQUEAKY THING! Let's play before you have to work hard, okay?! » Cue a moment of awkward standing in silence for his rider. "So… pretty bad, huh? The storm?"

"Ye can have this one?" Whether Odesse means that as temporarily trade or not is a different question. It was a pretty sweet knife, but since she can't really wear two knives, she'll offer the spare one back to the brownrider. The dolphins are used to being the squeakiest things around, but the wherry toy is definitely intriguing, although dolphin teeth are probably a bit rougher than what the bath toy was expected to deal with. They'll have fun while it lasts though. Now that the 'provisioning' seems to be done, she'll unfasten the thermos and immediately start at the soup. No worries about it being too warm. The question gets a quick nod as she swallows the gulp of noodles. "Yeah. It's been a while since I heard 'em call for anything near this bad. The harbormaster's sent firelizards out for all the captains nearby. At least, all the ones he could. 'N we sent some pairs out for the rest."

Taliveth does at least try to be considerate enough to keep his bulky self away from boats and people working, and lets the dolphins have at that toy. That poor, poor toy. Amidst the play, he'll try to get his fill of dolphin-nuzzling. A'ndi takes Odesse's knife with a skeptical raising of a brow, turning it over in his hand before nodding in surprised approval. "Yeah, sure. All right." This trade, it is acceptable. The brownrider will occupy himself with getting the sack re-situated, listening quietly and letting the dolphineer stuff her face. "How much damage on land do you think? Water? Wind?"

When you're about to be faced with a marathon swim and then work on top of that, you stuff your face when you can. Odesse is going to try and sneak in what last minute carbo-loading she can. And the soup is right here in a convenient method for getting in her face. As for the damage, she shrugs. "That's more of a starcrafter thing. At least, once it hits land. The water is already all sorts of crazy." She waves her free hand out to the rather choppy ocean in front of them. It's not just the splashing of the dolphins and Taliveth making all those waves. "It's coming right for Black Rock though." There's a bit of a frown as she mentions the hold, although she doesn't immediately follow up with how much she hates pirates. "Where they got ye goin' to?"

"Hm. I don't think most people would really mind if Black Rock got washed off the face of Pern." You know, except the people who live there. "… After evacuation. Of course." Just throwing that in there~! As for her question, A'ndi runs a hand back through already wind-mussed hair, glancing over his shoulder from where he came. "That's what I'm supposed to find out this morning. After this little detour, I guess." His blue gaze falls back upon Odesse and is that just a teeny, tiny bit of concern in his eyes, in the slight furrow of brows? "What exactly will you be doing out there?"

Odesse just shrugs and continues to gulp down that soup. "I'm sure there must be some alright folks that live there…" Like three. The rest are probably all complicit in the wretched hive of scum and villainy as far as she's been concerned. But there are probably some children to save and stuff. "Well, good luck. 'N uh… thanks. Fer the soup. 'N the knife." As for the question about what she's doing, she'll get a little bit of her normal mischievous grin back. "Aside from swimmin'? Not everyone is gonna be able to get their ships back to shore in time. Or get the warnin's. Savin' folks from seawrecks is kinda the biggest part of the job. 'N once we haul 'em out, Black Rock is probably gonna be the closest place with even a hope of lastin' out the storm, dependin' on how bad it gets."

"It was Taliveth's idea. So thank him," A'ndi clarifies. Odesse's assignment gets another frown out of the brownrider. "So swimming in dangerous waters, and then hauling people to Black Rock. That sounds… yeah." Less than ideal. Cue another moment of awkward silence. "Look-" And now A'ndi looks away, because it's hard to look someone in the face when you're trying to say you give a shit. "-just. Don't go kicking the bucket out there, all right? Taliveth would be inconsolable for ages and I don't have time to deal with that."

"Ye give a hell of a pep talk, ye know that?" Odesse only has a momentary bout of WTF-A'ndi Face before rolling her eyes. "So when they gonna make ye a weyrlingmaster with speeches like that?" Humor, it's the best defense mechanism, right? There's some more commotion further down from some of the other dolphineers. Looks like things are picking up the pace again. Before she gets back to her duties, she does give the man a brief hug. Hopefully the personal contact is too unexpected for much resistance as it is pretty fleeting. "'N ye keep Taliveth safe, 'kay? The dolphins need someone to sing to at night when I wanna go do other things." There's a wink and a wave and she's running off. New knife, now half empty thermos, and the recently repacked knapsack all in hand. Time to load up and GO!

"Weyrlingmaster? Don't even joke about that-" The hug! It's not expected! A'ndi blinks bewilderedly and watches Odesse run off to go kick ass and take names and save people. But time to load up and go is right, so the brownrider heads off to get his assignment for this upcoming disaster. Taliveth might lag behind a bit— to say farewell to the brave dolphins and dolphineers as they depart, mooing into the wind and waves.

Catch him by surprise. That definitely isn't Odesse doing an evil laugh as she heads off cackling about the bewildered look. Nope… just the wind.
