"If your plan is good enough, I can arrange that later."

Central Bazaar

All roads in the weyr ultimately lead here, to this center of commerce. Canvas awnings jut out over time worn, sandy cobblestone, sheltering customers and wares alike from the majority of Igen's elements, and funnel scents both mouthwatering and vomit inducing through the thin streets. Almost all store fronts are open air, delineated by sandstone arches with intricately carved facades. The insides of these stone-shingled buildings act as an amplifier for the salesmens' bawled enticements, and are held up by the chipped swirls of marble pillars.

It is the fortieth day of Winter and 40 degrees. It is a bright, sunny day.

A nice hat is good for these cooler days and Rigo's is fairly non-descript. Though he has hired competent men to keep an eye on the less-than-reputable men he has scrounged up, today he's come to visit the site himself. A small smile lingers on his face like the's laughing at something going on about him. Arms folded behind he just keeps walking.

And well, enough has been going wrong lately that Ramita knows better than to risk leaving anything to chance. Since Herik was fool enough to get himself searched, the Steen woman has made it a habit to check up on the Steen cousins that have been assigned to actually supervise the road building crews. She's just finished talking to one of those such cousins right now. Once she's turned away there's an incredibly brief roll of her eyes towards the sky. Faranth help her.

"Trouble in paradise?" Of COURSE Rigo knows what the fool Herik has done. It seems to be becoming more common of an affliction within the ranks of the Steens. It amuses him but he manages to sound slightly sympathetic, even though he isn't at all. "The work seems to be progressing."

"Paradise?" Ramita will focus her cool gaze on Rigo, now that she's done looking up to the sky that absolutely isn't going to help her. "Weren't you the one that said a work project in the bazaar is bound to come with its own slew of headaches?" She'll cross her arms and glance back over her shoulder at the crew behind her briefly. "Yes, but not as quickly as one hopes. Especially not with the weyr seeming out to claim every able bodied man of the right age…" It also hasn't been Herik that was the only person taking a white knot instead of returning to work on the roads. The most significant one, definitely, but they need every body they can get. "And I keep getting reminded that summer will be here soon enough."

"Wise words. Every time a dragon settles their eggs upon the sand is like this. You have been gone much too long lass." He's allowed to say that being older than her. Facing Ramita Rigo can watch the workers behind her doing their best to work despite being understaffed. "Some will return soon enough once they disqualify themselves for those eggs. The search riders even picked up one of my men."

"Maybe. Vintner hall isn't too far from Benden Weyr, but perhaps the search riders avoided raiding it in similar fashion for fear of disrupting the wine?" Ramita will give a slight shrug. It's not that she's completely unfamiliar with the concept of search. But the fact that there's two eggs and the Bazaar is technically in the Weyr means it's effects are much more pronounced. "But soon enough isn't soon enough." A single finger will be taping on her elbow, not completely able to hide her frustration, even if her face remains perfectly neutral.

"Could the family have expected any less after that Nasrin went and impressed herself gold despite their objections?" Delicately Rigo lifts an eyebrow as if inviting Ramita into his inner circle of conspiracy. "Vitus should have put a shorter leash on his son knowing that a successful impression had been made with one of his blood." AS an outsider Rigo has no problem sharing his opinions~ "If summer comes and this is undone you'll simply have to change the work, no need for it to end."

You know that saying about if looks were daggers? Well, the one Ramita's shooting would have him looking like a pin cushion if it were literal when he brings up Nasrin and her gold who is entirely part of the reason for one of her biggest headaches. And she's not going to comment on the family matters further. "And do you have any bright ideas on how we might change the work? There's little good a half built road will do us."

If dark looks were able to harm Rigo he wouldn't be in his comfortable niche within the bazaar right now. "It's all about inefficiencies really. Smaller crews trained to do only one thing. That way they become accustomed to doing that one thing and will find the quickest ways to complete those tasks." Just throw a li'l assembly-line logic into the business. "Prey into the fact that many of these men," especially the ones from Rigo, "are inherently lazy. Make it seem like less work and they'll inevitably end up doing more."

"It's a point to consider. But also, there's still the fact that come summer, we have the weather to worry about for summer. Heat can and has killed. Especially when doing manual labor." Ramita will give the smallest of headshakes. The overwhelming heat of Igen's summers still seems like an insurmountable hurdle to overcome. "As you said, the men are lazy and summer seems to bring that out even more."

Rigo arches an eyebrow and Ramita will get a look inside the former fighter's head. "Does it really matter if some of these men sicken or die?"

"A few?" Ramita will take a quick glance back at the crew that is conveniently out of ear shot. "No." That's a very firm no. "But if enough do die, it certainly makes it harder to get more folks to continue the rest of the work, doesn't it?"

"You underestimate the greed of people. Simply pay them more, and if they happen to die, well…." Rigo lifts up an eyebrow to invite her into his own rather blood thirty practicality, "you will not have to pay them, will you?"

Ramita simply shrugs. "One would think. But Vitus seems to have it in his head that we must get the bulk of this work done before summer or everything will grind to a halt. You're not volunteering to tell him otherwise, are you?" And she'll raise an eyebrow of her own at that. Does anyone really want to talk with the Steen patriarch at the moment?

"Oh, he isn't wrong. It would be most efficent to not run into the heat of summer. But not catastrophic either. Vitus simply must be more flexible with what he cannot control." This is Rigo not-NOT volunteering. He has zero fear of the Steen's leadership as an outsider.

"The project is ambitious, and the goal is to go beyond the bazaar itself and even in the best case scenario will take more than a single turn." Ramita's definitely thought about these scenarios. And she does see the man not refusing yet and still talking about the matter. "So, do you think you could come up with a plan for this summer work? Also, if you were able to find some more men right now despite the ongoing search, it would definitely make any suggestion more convincing."

"It would take me at least a week, perhaps more. But I might be able to find some holdless up towards Keroon and beyond." Because there are ALWAYS holdless, right? "How do you feel about women doing this kind of work?"

Ramita will nod at the timeframe. "That sounds reasonable." And as for women she gives yet
another shrug. "As long as they're able to do the work, I don't have a problem with it, although it's definitely not the work for every woman. The need for more able bodies far outweighs any preference for gender of said able bodies."

"Then I will see what I can find. My fee for this will, of course, be higher as I'll have to go further afield." Business Ramita. Hiring though Rigo isn't the cheapest thing ever, though he DOES manage to get results so… value for the payment?

"Of course." Because Ramita does understand business. "But paid upon results." Because totally not just paying Rigo to leave the area and then possibly not come back. Or come back without the folks he promised. "And after you return, then we'll talk more about your plans for summer?"

Nodding once Rigo seals the deal. (Who needs handshakes?!) "Perhaps Vitus could be in attendance also." Not that Rigo's trying to go over her head or anything~

"If your plan is good enough, I can arrange that later." Ramita will give a slight smile at that. And indeed, if he comes up with a plan as good as he thinks he can, she'll arrange the meeting. But first she wants to know she won't be made a fool of. But seeing as business seems to be concluded, she's going to give a polite nod and start walking on her way. "See you in about two sevens then, Rigo?"

"Two sevens. I will send a message if more time is needed." Humans are harder to move than other commodities cuz, they like, want FOOD and WATER and all that stuff. So annoying. Off Rigo goes~
