"Planning to impress to a gold, girl?"

Igen Weyr Living Caverns

Brightly lit by a regimented march of strung glow-globes, Igen's busy living caverns are cut of the same exotic limestone design that frequents the bazaar without. Tapestries line the tops of the walls, one for each of Igen's wings, past and present; beneath them, skybroom tables litter the floors in scattered profusion. Some of the wicker chairs have seen better days, but most of the worst offenders have long-ago been replaced. The seemingly random placement of furniture, however, at closer inspection yields a sort of cross-shape of negative space. The northernmost walls and nooks of the caverns are owned by the kitchen's buffet, food-laden thrice daily in regimented shifts by busy bakers from the curtained southern entrance to the kitchens. To the east is a large arch leading outside; westerly lies the large doors leading down into the bowels of the weyr itself.

A small shadow near the cavern entrance heralds the appearance moments later of a female rider, quickly working to rid herself of her layers of leather. A mixed scene of sulphur and agenothree accompanies the Southern rider as she immediately turns toward what's left of the lunch offerings, dark eyes scanning the reduced pickings as she grabs a bowl. She helps herself to the thickened ends of soup and a heel of bread before searching out the ever present carafes of klah.

Edlsesa is nestled amongst the stragglers here for a late lunch. Her white knot announces her as one of Igen's current candidates and thus, open for irdering around. She's fervently hoping no one needs anything because she's just sat down to eat and this will be her first meal for the day. Between candidacy and her own insistence on keeping up with her studies, she's busy busy all the time and forgets to eat a lot. As it is, she's ravenously scarfing down a meatroll while reading up on some dusty history tome, something about the history af Benden Weyr and it's riders. And underneath that, is a series of flight charts and thread reports from turns past that she hopes to get through and memorize. If one of those eggs on the sands chooses her, Sesa wants to be ready for it! Her obsessive need to learn and catagorize that learning for now, then and later is well known at this point.

Kodi does not appear ready to order anyone around, luckily for any nearby candidates. She does end up sitting directly across from one of them, though, nodding in greeting to Edlsesa, dark eyes studying the girl briefly over the rim of her first cup of klah. She breaks her bread into tiny pieces to add to her soup, then begins stirring the mixture, pausing only to brush a few stray crumbs off one of those old Thread charts. "Planning to impress to a gold, girl?" Kodi asks in a quiet voice, no particular emotion showing on her face as she indicates Sesa's study materials with a nod.

Edlsesa looks up from her studies, Kodi's question taking a moment to sink through to her fact muddled brain. "Hm?" She begins, but then she's noting that it's a rider that sits in front of her and she straightens her posture and snaps off a salute, cheeks coloring as she looks at her study materials. "Uhm, no ma'am. I would never presume to assume that I could study my way into a gold impression, or impression at all." She blushes again. "I'll admit to wanting to be prepared, really. And, I am….was? a harper, and my specialty was going to be record keeping and history, so I find it all….facinating."

It is entirely possible Kodi's entire goal was to make Edlsesa uncomfortable, because her dark eyes take on a faint twinkle, and one corner of her mouth twitches upward. Those are her only current tells, however, soon erased as she takes a bite of her bread-thickened soup. "In other words, once a Harper, always a Harper," the visiting rider supplies, definitely smiling a little bit this time. She downs more of her klah, then stirs her soup again. "Fascinating is all well and good, but don't cram your head so much with old stuff that you risk confusing it with current stuff," she advises quietly. "Impression or not, there's plenty of time to fine tune your knowledge after you've applied the basics first. Makes more sense, then, too." She takes in a little more soup, then points at Sesa's knot with her spoon. "Besides, you might make your fellows jealous."

Edlsesa chuckles when Kodi emits the addage about Harpers. "Aye, I suppose you could see it that way." She looks confused and half offended however, when the woman tells her that she risks confusing things. Edlsesa has never had an issue with confusing facts, it's one of the reasons Igen's archivists love having her around. Sesa has a nose for organization and record keeping and fact recall. "No offense ma'am, but I'm sure I'll be fine. I've never had an issue with confusing facts." Kodi's last has Sesa really giving her a confused look, because she's never been told to stop studying and learning before. It's something that's like breathing for the semi-ex harper apprentice. "I'm more than willing to tutor those who would like to learn, but I cannot fathom halting my own learning to sooth ruffled feathers."

"No offence, candidate," Kodi replies quietly, meeting Edlsesa's eyes, "but you're only a kid, and therefore prone to overstepping yourself." She takes another spoonful of soup, dark gaze never wavering. "I never said to stop. Just brought up something to take into account," she counters before continuing her brief meal in silence.

Normally, Sesa would be huffy about being told she's overstepped. Really, she is the epitome of respectful and kind at all times, saving when she thinks she's been wronged, or that she's right about something. And well, education is of the utmost importance to the girl. However, she is quite aware of her candidate status and the fact that talking back could get her into trouble, local rider or no. She inhales deeply through her nose, lips pressing together as she bites her tongue, so to speak, and giving a show of restraint that is well beyond her fifteen turns of experience. She really has had to grow up over the last two turns, and it shows sometimes. "Pardon my overstep ma'am." She says respectfully and begins to tidy her study materials. She really should finish eating, because it's a crapshoot as to whether or not she'll remember to eat dinner.

Kodi shrugs softly as she scoops up the last the last bit of her meal. "You didn't overstep with me. I'm no one, here. Just a word of caution was all." Down goes the last of her klah, and she gets to her feet, dishes in hand. "It's not like pissing off your fellows would make a sharding bit of difference on the sands. It's just a long time between then and now." At which point, she's clearly aiming to leave Sesa to her meal and studies, walking away to deposit her dishes in a bin before resuming whatever business outside that has brought her to Igen.

Edlsesa watches Kodi go with a bit of a look on her face, and soon finds that her lunch is no longer very appealing. She stows a redfruit and a couple of pieces of bread for later, gathers up her things, and walks out of the caverns, a thoughtful look on her face. Had that really just happened?
