There are no weyrlings.

There are no weyrlings for the first time in a while, and Vosji can't help but watch the queens and wait, thinking, hoping. One of them will surely rise soon. Won't they? Even if none are glowing. It's been a while since Zsaviranth has taken to the skies, hasn't it?

It's terrible that she's focusing on this so much, and she knows it. Other people would be revelling in the fact that they have an important job that currently requires very little focus. Besides flying Thread, she has very little work. Has no charges. Has nothing to keep herself busy with —

Nothing to hide behind.

So she's stuck staring in the face the fact that she doesn't do much anymore besides work.

« That has to be detrimental for your sanity. » Iskanzivoth thinks he's helpful, though he probably also realizes he's providing the kind of ribbing humor that deserves the eyeroll he gets from her. « Must be why you have the wine. »

I have the wine because it tastes good. Vosji swirls it around in the glass; it's one cup of wine, she's not drinking to excess. Not drinking to hide from life or drinking because she's trying to have fun. It's for the flavor.

Because fun is … what does she really do for fun?

When was the last time she really just enjoyed herself, for herself, without the focus being to some extent on someone else's well-being and development? She gets told to take a few days' vacation, to relax, but eventually it gets tedious, lonely.

« Should make more friends, then. Even if all you really need is me. Maybe another weyrmate. But all you need is me. »

I know. She knows all of that. But.

It's just not that easy anymore, in her mid-thirties, at a Weyr not where she was born, raised, knew everyone. It's not as if she's new to Igen any longer, but she's been a fixture of the upper echelon of Weyr ranks for the entirety of her tenure; from assistant to Weyrlingmaster, but never just a member of the fighting force. Except for Miel, no one knows her as well — her other assistants know her, but only as Boss.

It's not that easy to find a social place, anymore — let alone real friends, let alone love — and Vosji isn't sure she remembers how.
