"Why are there so many shardin' ships!?!"

Seacraft Stone Complex

Thick stone encases the immense sea craft complex, keeping people and equipment safe from thread, but also trapping moisture in the air. The majority of the complex is one large room, the central hub for the craft. Long tables skirt the far side of the room, providing work space for individuals and crews. Behind the tables are stands where maps of sea lanes and currents can be hung for study. The middle of the room is set for coils of partially finished rope that hang from hooks, and a place to repair nets, all surrounded by chairs. Adorning the wall above the entrance to the barracks is a painting of an old regal ship, open masts full of wind, on hull reads, Storm's Defiance. On the opposing wall, above a large fireplace, hangs the seacraft banner, anchor of silver set against a sea-blue background. The hearth is surrounded by large comfortable chairs, where sea weary men can warm their bones.

It is the eighty-eighth day of Winter and 37 degrees. The day is dreary and overcast. A chilly winter rain is falling down in soft drizzles.

It's sort a miserable day out, cold and wet. Even when it's not actually raining, the damp seeps into everything. It's basically the worst weather ever for flying sweeps (or, well, debatably the worst). So of course M'noq is just off a round of sweeps, stopping by a few small cotholds on his way. And he has one more stop to make before he can head back in and warm up. He makes his way into the Seacraft complex, trying not to get dunked or trip on a coil of rope or have some heavy equipment fall on him. He stops a lad knotted as an older apprentice. "One moment. Can you point me towards wherever Odesse is?" he asks the boy.

M'noq is in luck! The apprentice definitely does know of the dolphincrafter, even though she's been wearing more clothes around lately considering it's winter. He can give directions that should be easy enough to be followed as long as the wingleader doesn't do something crazy like fall into the water, which lead to the back corner of the complex where all sorts of records are kept. Odesse has ensconced herself with a mug of klah and a plethora of maps and notebooks and shipping records. So many different hides and papers. The woman's hair is looking a little bit frazzled like she's been scratching her head a good bit.

This wingleader is fairly good at following directions, and before long M'noq finds his way to the records area and Odesse. "Knock knock," he says, peeking around a records shelf when he spots her. "I hate to interrupt your research, but do you have a moment?" A wry smile as he takes note of her frazzled look. "On the other hand, if you've been staring at these things for a while, maybe you could do with a break?"

"Why are there so many shardin' ships!?!" Odesse is going to try and rhetorically ask the shelf, knowing the answer herself and not expecting anybody to actually be there. But look, there's a M'noq. She'll clear her throat and straighten some of those notes. "Yeah, probably about time for me to take a break." And she's going to throw herself down in a seat and reach to refill her klah mug. There's another seat if he wishes to take one and she offers up the klah pot if he wants that as well.

M'noq shrugs out of his soaked riding jacket and hangs it over the back of his chair. At least the shirt under it is dry, except for the collar. "Thanks, I'd love some klah," he says, grabbing a spare mug and holding it out for her to fill. He sits in the chair with a sigh. "What sort of ships are you looking for? I've heard some smugglers were caught and brought in recently."

It might not be particularly warm in here since the building is large and stone and drafty, but at least this little section is fairly close to the hearth and so warmer than most. Odesse will fill the mug. There's no sweetner or creamer, so hopefully black and lukewarm is fine. That's how the journeywoman is drinking hers once hospitality is taken care of. "Lookin' for any ships that were where they shouldn't be, so all of 'em. Most of the known ships down here, especially in winter, will have a dolphin escort. And so when one is seen without one, we're trying to make notes. 'N figure out where it came from…" which she waves to all the work on the desk. There's a lot of different sources to go through for all that information.

M'noq takes his klah without sweetening, so black is just fine. He might be a little disappointed it's not hotter, but he won't complain about it. He hums at her explanation, not having known about the dolphin escort. "Easy way to keep track of them and report trouble, I suppose. We watch from the air and have seen a few off the shipping lanes, but it's hard to know if they're up to no good or not. Do you need help combing through the records?"

The face Odie makes at her first sip probably gives away her disappointment as well, but the hearth is all the way over there and would have required walking if she needed more klah in the middle of research. So lukewarm it is and she'll tolerate it. She hmms a bit at the offer, crossing her arms as she thinks. "Ye got any riders that were seacrafters before Impressin'? If they don't know what they're lookin' for, wouldn't be much use."

M'noq looks thoughtful as he takes a drink of his klah. The idea of warmth more than actual warmth, at this point. "Let's see… oh, I do have one who… has some seafaring experience. I doubt he studied in the Craft, but he might be better than nothing. I could ask if Ocelot has any as well. Otherwise I have some who are quick studies, if you don't mind taking a bit of time to train. Experienced would be better, though," he agrees.

Odesse raises an eyebrow at the seafaring experience. "What sort? Like, a deckhand? or a fisher but not a Fisher? 'N as long as they are quick studies…" She shrugs a little. "Would probably be better then nothin'. There's a lot to look for. Like how long it should take a ship from travel from one place to a next given the weather conditions 'n size of the ship… 'N what the ships supposed purpose is…"

M'noq shrugs at that. He doesn't ask a lot about someone's background, if they don't seem inclined to talk about it. "I guess deckhand might be an apt enough term. Along with a few 'extracurriculars' that may or may not be useful to you." She may or may not pick up on that he means 'former pirate', but that might be a helpful option. "I'll send him around and you can ask for yourself. If he's not what you need, or if you need something else, drop me a note and let me know."

Considering Odesse was literally just talking with Keelie about there being some pirates who are now riders, the woman is a little bit suspicious at the mention of 'extracurriculars'. "Uh-huh." It's a vague enough response to be neutral on whether those extracurriculars may or may not be useful. "Guess I'll have to see when he shows up. 'N I got a firelizard a while back, so sendin' messages will be a bit easier." At least her sending messages to him instead of just leaving notes at the library hoping that he shows up and the archivists turn it over.

M'noq nods at that. "Firelizards are quick enough, provided they know where they're going, and to whom. Or send a note to me with the Lynx rider, he'll make sure it gets back to me." He doesn't even protest the questionable usefulness of the Lynx rider's experience, he will just let her judge for herself. "Well, and if that's all I can help you with, I'd best be headed back. I'd love to see a report of what you've found. Perhaps you'll allow the man I'm sending to make a copy of your findings."

"Sure. I was probably goin' to be makin' a copy for ye anyway." Odesse nods with that. She can definitely use the wingrider as scribe if nothing else. She has a lot of reports to copy. "'N thanks, M'noq." And since he's leaving, she's going to get back to her lukewarm drink and all those charts of her's. She's got quite a puzzle to figure out here and hopefully it doesn't get interrupted by any shipwreck emergencies.
