Galleries

Though occasionally cleaned by ambitious (or neurotic) drudges or weyrbrats being disciplined, the lack of Eggs over the last several Turns has led to the Galleries falling into a state of disrepair. Sand can be found…well, everywhere. On the benches, under the benches, on the railings and walkways. There is also the random tidbit leftover from people who've wandered into the gathering place since the last cleaning. A random bit of cloth here, a bit of something that might have been a carving-in-progress once there.

It's hot down there. Super hot. So it's not surprise to find Linny up in the Galleries taking a break from the heat, giving her a higher perspective as she looks down upon Kaelidyth and her glorious thirty eight eggs. Even if she has hidework in front of her that likely needs her attention, she seems to be distracted by something, perhaps the coloring on one of the eggs, lost in thought, or maybe she's just busy carrying on a conversation with the gold currently making the rounds inspecting her eggs. Regardless, she looks zoned out in an oddly peaceful sort of way.

It's odd, with all of the distraction and near fight that she got into last time that she was up in the Galleries, one would think that Maiena would learn to keep her head out of places of trouble. Perhaps she has a knack for finding it, or perhaps she just wants to come up and /see/ the eggs now that there aren't people cramming each other for seats. Whatever the reason for one of Rosie's bouncers to arrive, arrive she has, and she walks along the front of the railing, looking down at the multi-colored cornucopia of eggs on the sands.

The ever present smell of freshly baked breads precedes the petite woman as she makes her way up in to the galleries to have a look at the eggs below. Ravene carries in one hand a basket that's been carefully wrapped in a cloth, beneath which is the familiar lumpiness of some of Ravene's signature stuffed breads, "A grand sight," she says softly to Linny as she seats herself, "Congratulations, they're truly beautiful," Ravene says with a sincere warmth in her voice. The basket is set on the stone bench between her and the jr. weyrwoman, "Thought you could use something to eat," Ravene, pusher of fatt..er… healthy foods. Maiena is given a warm smile from where Ravene has seated herself, and she's willing to just let things go on in silence now that she's alerted Linny to the presence of food.

As someone else comes into her line of sight, Linny blinks her eyes away from whatever she was looking, or not looking, at in order for them to rest up Maiena, and when she sees that she's come to gaze and gawk at Kaelidyth's eggs, well, she can't help but smirk a little bit. It's been awhile since she's had a clutch worthy of appreciation and the attention feels good. The smell hits her before Ravene comes to sit down next to her, and that smirk turns into a genuine smile. "Thank you." For the compliment about the eggs and the food, Linny pausing to take a peek inside the basket. "I'll be sure to share these with Xh'yr. He'll be much appreciative." Though she's never been one for lots of bread, as someone who looks after her figure, with her PT punishment, it couldn't hurt her to have a little bit, given how she's already forming hard muscle in the place of soft curves.

"Something smells…" Maiena gives a small pause as she turns to see the woman interacting with the weyrwoman about goodies and such. "Ah, that explains it." She gives a small nod, half bow thing to the pair, not knowing the proper decorum. If she passes nearby, which she currently is, the smell of lilac and jasmine can be wafted from her in a sort of second hand fashion. It's clear that she's not wearing it, but it permeates her none the less. "And yes, lovely. Congrats." She quickly adds, in way of addendum as Ravene offers up her own congratulations on the eggs.

Ravene's eyes crinkle at the edges as she chuckles, "Ravene," she offers to the new face. Give Maiena time, she'll either grow to love the sight of the baker or run and hide. There never seems to be much in the middle, not that Ravene's difficult to get along with, "There are some truly interesting eggs out there this time round," a nod is given as Ravene speaks. She's happy to sit back and let the other two talk, or more specifically to lean forward to count the eggs and make silent guesses on how many of which colors are out there.

"Want some?" Linny offers the young woman, gesturing towards the goodies within the basket. There's enough to go around, and since she doesn't intend on eating a bunch of it, she's more than willing to share. Sorry Xh'yr. "They're…something," she confirms with a light laugh, allowing dark eyes to sweep back out towards all those eggs, Kaelidyth rumbling lowly down on the Sands in regards to whatever it is her lifemate is thinking. (Some of those eggs are downright weird looking.) "Heard my bodyguard got searched. It's a good thing I've got her in super overprotective mode right now," she comments dryly, using her chin to gesture down towards the gold.

"Oh, thank you." Maiena will never pass up food, especially not free food. A scarred hand reaches out and takes the piece of bread from Linny and she sits, resting with an easy gait that makes her seem much older than she is. "You had a bodyguard? Were they any good? I protect ther girls down at Rosie's." Yeah, right. This little thing? "These smell really…" It's only then that it registers that Ravene had given her a name. "Sorry, sorry. I'm Maiena." She holds her hand out to the pair. "Nice to meet you, Ravene and ma'aaam?" She sort of drawls that out.

A nod is given before Ravene says, "Well met," then she's back to looking at all those eggs. Yes, some of them do have a very unique look to them, but by and large Ravene is enjoying the lot. It will be interesting to watch them hatch.

It's not that Linny thinks she's well known. Or famous in the Pernese way. But there's something amused about her when Maiena obviously doesn't know her name— amused almost in that haughty sort of way. "Linny," she supplies before attempting to smother her lips into a much more proper smile, clearing her throat before glancing back out towards Kaelidyth's latest batch. "They'll do the Weyr good, that's for sure. Glad we are finally able to really contribute to the Weyr's ranks." Since that last clutch…

Delila comes up to the galleries and she is holding something in her arms. She carries it over and notices the others. She salutes promptly as she moves to find a seat, "Good day." She says politely.

Maiena nods her head towards Linny. "Well thank you Linny." She says before she looks towards the woman and waves once, with the breaded hand. "hello." She splits her bread open. "Care to share some? Given and give back." She mutters softly. "It's fresh!"

Ravene nods, "Made it just before coming to look at the eggs," one of the firelizards that look to Ravene pops in, and the woman sighs, "Got to go. Apprentices," which explains every thing, "It was good to meet you Maiena," and off she goes.

Selaine has a habit of wandering. Especially when she doesn't have much to do. Though the air is much cooler outside, the young greenrider makes her way into the Galleries. What she's there for, who can say? To take a look at those colorful eggs? Admire the gold and bronze that protect their eggs ever so carefully? Either way, in she goes and spies a small crowd. A quick salute is given to the Weyrwoman with a small smile - with her good arm, of course. The newcomer is given a smile, too, memories recalling her face from the clutching. "Hello ladies, Weyrwoman."

Two new people means that there are now more people to eat that bread before Linny has a chance to get her hungry hands on it, pushing the basket towards both Delila and Selaine. "Welcome, have some." There's no choice in that; she's a weyrwoman, she can demand such things, right? It's a good feeling, to have everyone there to look upon Kaelidyth's eggs, her cheeks rosy from the stupid smile tugging her lips up. It's always nice to be appreciated, turning silent as she shares those warm feelings with her lifemate who once more rumbles contently from the Sands.

"You should eat." Maiena tells Linny, holding up her bread to the two new arrivals. "We can share or if they're really hungry they can have my part too." She says, nodding to the new arrivals. "I'm Maiena. I work at Rosies." She smells like she does, but she doesn't fit the 'mold' of a call girl, as it were. "Come to see the lovely colorful eggs?"

Delila smiles as she takes a piece of bread out of the basket, "Thank you." She says as she starts to nibble on it and she puts her small brown firelizard down on her lap. The firelizard yawns a little bit and stretches in her lap. She leans out and smiles, "They are lovely eggs all of them." She blushes a bit and waves to Maiena and her mention of Rosie's, "Hello again."

The greenrider hadn't even noticed the basket but she helps herself all the same, especially when Linny tells her to. "Well met, Maiena. Selaine, green Akitith's." A nod in her direction and a smile towards her wingmate's even as good hand nimbly grabs a bread. There's no breaking it since she can only use one hand at the moment sooo she's taking small bites. "Rosie's, hm?" There's a thoughtful pause though she doesn't elaborate. Her tone is mostly curious. A thoughtful gaze is directed towards the mound of eggs, a small smile stretching her lips. "Yes, they are quite the colorful bunch. And a good clutch. You must be proud, Weyrwoman."

"I'll eat when I have other options than fattening bread," is Linny's reply complete with a smirk; she doesn't have the body she has at her age without eating right and working out when she's not busy working. Softening, she turns a little grin upon Selaine for the latest batch of compliments. "Proud doesn't even begin to describe how we feel. Ecstatic. Beyond thrilled." But since even those words don't do it justice, she gives up with an exhale and a shrug. "Hopefully they're a good batch and not all green." Definitely need a couple of strong bronzes and a handful of good browns in there.

"Ahh…" Maiena looks from Linny towards the green rider and she winces. She mouths a 'sorry' in her direction so that Linny doesn't see. She offers a "Yeah, I'm a bouncer there." To Selaine, and then she waves over to Delila. "How're you? Enjoy the day? It is rahter nice." Seeing as they both don't take her bread, she breaks it in half and hands half back towards Linny. "Ma'am."

Dinsayde has always been good at slipping in and getting close without brig noticed, and today is no different, specially because all eyes seem to be on the mound of eggs below. Dinsayde is silent as death as he slides up beside Weyrwoman Linny and her companions, one of whom being one of the riders that searched him. "Good evening Ladies!" He says with a salute. Dinsayde may not look the same, having donned the typical candidates gear, white knot and all. He wonders silently how Linny feels about losing her bodyguard to the search, perhaps he'll find out.

Delila smiles, "I'm Delila, Amazolith's Green." She says proudly and nods in agreement with Linny, "Yes you know what would be good, some meat and fixings would be great with this bread." She smiles, "Yes I did. A good day of drilling to get ready for the next threadfall." She nods to the candidate, "Hello there."

There's just a blinking look turned upon Maiena at the offer of bread, even after her refusal from moment's ago. "No thank you." But it's the all-too-familiar voice that pulls a big grin out of Linny, as well as a "Excuse me, ladies", before she pushes to stand, and without a word, she goes to Dinsayde and embraces him tightly. So much for her taking the news poorly. "Congratulations." Even if now she's without someone officially looking out for her; lucky for her, she has a gold dragon and a few tall bronzeriders keeping their eyes on her all of the time.

"Oh, I'm sorry." Maiena goes to munch on the bread instead. She waits until her mouth is full before she answers Delila. "It's important, then. To keep everyone safe." She nods to the Candidate, "Congratulations." She tells him before she looks to Selaine. "Pretty good, huh?" She refers to the bread of course.

Delila salutes to Linny as she leaves, "Have a good evening ma'am." She continues to much on her bread. "Definitely, gotta work hard to make sure we all do our best up there. Yes congratulations. No more parties for a while."

Dinsayde is a little surprised by the gesture of affection from Linny, though he returns it in kind. "Many thanks Ms. Linny, let us hope that if I impress I do the Dragon justice, eh?" Dinsayde is still a bit shell shocked by the idea that he has it in him to be a rider, or at least a dragon thinks so. "Quite the clutch your lovely gold has laid." Dinsayde has a seat, waving at Delila and Maiena, and nodding at Selaine. His gaze wanders down to the eggs and a feeling of awe rushes over him.

There's a slight eyebrow raise when Linny moves to give Dinsayde a hug, though Selaine looks more amused than anything. Congratulations are offered around. The greenrider glances at Maiena at the comment and smiles. "Oh yes. Quite good." Is she referring to the bread? Her gaze lingers on the young bouncer for a moment before looking at Dinsayde with a soft chuckle. "Well, we'll just see, hm?" The greenrider quips. There's a wave there when her wingmate leaves.

To prevent herself from saying anything, Maiena stuffs some more of the bread into her mouth and simply begins chewing it, her eyes flicking between the Goldrider and her bodyguard and then back to the other riders assembled nearby. She gives a nod to Selaine, a half smirky smile breaking across her lips before she says "There are a lot of eggs. That alone is impressive."

Linny continues standing with her hands on her hips as she watches the little group gathered, a very satisfied look on her face before something brightens up her expression suddenly, tilting her head as she flicks her gaze between the group and the eggs. "You know. Maiena, was it?" Regardless, the weyrwoman moves on. "You're the only one here without something on your shoulder there," and a finger goes all swirly around that area on her before looking over at Selaine. "Would you be so kind as to make sure she gets settled in the barracks? Of course, if you say yes," gets added as her attention goes back to Maiena.

Delila claps her hands excitedly, "Oh that's so exciting, congratulations Maiena, looks like you'll be standing if you accept, which I hope you do." Her excitement wakes up her brown firelizard who creels a little bit. Delila looks down, 'Oh hush this is exciting." She smiles brightly as she looks to Maiena to see how the bouncer will answer.

Dinsayde looks at Maiena. Joy!!! Perhaps he won't be sleeping in the barracks alone tonight!! Selaine is given a sideways glance as Linny requests she put a knot on Maiena's shoulder. He waits to see what the girl says.

"Wait what?" Maiena says, looking between Linny and then Delila and then to Selaine and back again. "Huh what? What yeah, where…" She pauses and then looks around again. "Uh, well… yeah, of course." She says "Of course I'll stand." She says. "Really?"

Selaine watches Linny's expression and can almost read her mind. Not really, but Akitith got the message from Kaelidyth and so on and so forth. When the Weyrwoman looks over at her, Selaine grins and nods, also waiting for the bouncer's reply. Pulling a white knot out from NOWHERE (no, not really, it was in a pouch she's carrying around), she laughs softly at Maiena's reaction. "Yes, really." The greenrider replies, handing the knot over. "Congratulations. The dragons seem to think you've got the potential so I'm glad you'll Stand. Now… we need to head over to the Barracks and I've gotta lay down some ground rules with you."

"Excellent." Linny always likes it when she gets her way, and that pleased as punch smile shows as much. "Now, if you will actually properly excuse me this time, Kaelidyth wants me back down there." Ah, the demands of a gold mother. "And take that bread with you!" She doesn't need any more padding on the backside of hers, pointing to the basket as she walks past on her way back down to the Sands.

Maiena reaches out and takes the knot, looking at it for a long moment before she looks pained. "I hope the girls will be okay." She states, her eyes flicking between the gathering before she gives a genuine smile, a broad and warm smile that is surprisingly bright and cheery. "Lead on?"

Dinsayde will stay here, thanks. After a day of hard work and chores, this newly minted candidate is ready for a break. Dinsayde salutes Linny as she leaves and smiles at the rest. "Have fun settling in!" Dinsayde quips before his eyes turn to the sands.

Candidate Barracks
Hopes, dreams, and fears are contained in these cramped quarters, full of small cots and smaller trunks; thin ragged curtains barely provide privacy between the bunks, shining patches in the material suggesting one too many mending attempts. The minimal floor space is kept clear of debris and personal possessions, wide enough for a single broad table often used for study in the art of dragon care. Here, too, humidity has gathered into high corners, running down the walls and creating a slightly unpleasant atmosphere of damp and mildew. Near the entrance, one cubby exists, large enough to contain a bit of luxury for an adult overseer of the candidates, and a desk — for once in reasonable shape — is set to the left of the entrance, conveniently placed for the monitoring of comings and goings.

"So what are the rules?" Maiena looks around the room and noticing the cots. "I've never done this before."

When they arrive at the Barracks, Selaine obviously leads the way inside and waves around. The greenrider grins when Maiena asks about the rules. "Right, so. Several rather simple rules. No sex, no fighting," Emphasis on fighting with a fixed stare. "No excessive drinking and no leaving the Weyr without a rider escort. That said, you are now bottom of the bottom. Basically assume everyone you meet is a higher rank than you. Candidacy is tough and you'll be very busy. Every day."

"That's normal for me." Maiena says as she looks towards the rider and she smiles. "I'm not surprised it's tough. You have a hard job and thread isn't something you can punch and make it go away." She pauses. "And I don't fight, except for a last resort. Really."

Selaine nods approvingly. "Good. And it is a hard job. Candidacy is merely attempting to prepare you for Weyrlinghood, which is most certainly no walk in the park." There's a glance around before she focuses her attention on Maiena again. "Do you have any questions for me before I head out?"

Maiena shakes her head back and forth. "No, ma'am." Maiena does sort of a half salute, it's horrible looking. "I don't have any other questions." She looks around the barracks and hms.

Selaine offers Maiena grin and a sight wince with the attempted salute. "Good. And first lesson." She can't help herself, otherwise the girl would embarass herself. "This is a proper salute." The greenrider demonstrates, hand to forehead and completing it with a snap. "Other than that, good luck. And congratulations." There's a pat on her shoulder before Selaine is off.
