Herb Beds

These carefully tended beds are a testimony to the cooperation of the Gardener with FarmCraft. In painstakingly planned and flawlessly executed beds lie herbs of every type and utility. Medicinal herbs are in greatest abundance, but herbs for the flavouring of foods and beverages, and herbs for the making of dyes, are close behind. They present a giddy kaleidescope of shape and colour, and refresh the mind with their functional and effervescent beauty.

It is the fifty-second day of Autumn and 50 degrees. Clouds hang heavy in the sky, driven by a hard wind. A storm threatens on the horizon, towering thunderclouds caught over the mountains. Only a light drizzle falls here and there throughout the day.

These days, there are only a handful of places that one might find a particular healer. When not in the infirmary during a time when she should be found there, it's easy enough to guess where else she might be. And that's exactly where Lorawyn is today. While a Gardener works away somewhere amongst the various beds of herbs, the healer kneels in front of the beds with the greatest variety of medicinal herbs, a basket beside her with a pair of shears in hand. Already, the basket is near halfway filled, but Lorawyn doesn't seem to be stopping any time soon.

Vani totally has legit business in the herb beds today (or any day really), which is why she's just sauntering along in her flight leathers all nonchalantly. Lalalala~ "Oh Lorawyn! I haven't seen you in an age…" Funny how that works with a little mutual avoidance. Vani at least appears to be happy to see the healer. "Wotcha doin?" But she's keeping it super casual.

Lorawyn doesn't purposely avoid Vani. It is simply the nature of their duties that prevents them seeing each other more often… and lack of effort to seek each other out. But then again, Lorawyn pretty much keeps to herself a lot lately. The sound of her friend's voice in the herb beds is an odd one, as depicted by the surprised expression that washes over her face when she looks towards Vani. "Vani! What're you doing here?" There's an inquisitive lift of a brow, though her tone is mostly just curious. A wave to her basket for Vani's question. "Picking some herbs for experimenting."

"What do you mean 'what're you doing here?' I'll have you know I come here all the time…" Vani snorts after that bright pronouncement. "Actually, I went to the infirmary first, they said you might be here." Next stop was totally the 'Kitten, who says the meta about not seeking each other out is true? "What kind of experiments?" Vani asks with idle curiousity, but the avid way her eyes scan the assorted greenery in the basket suggests that perhaps, there is reason for this 'chance' encounter after all. "I think you should do something about bruises" She nods her head firmly, after that awkward segue way closer to what she wants.

The look that Lorawyn gives Vani is a very skeptical one when she makes the pronouncement, and then her expression relaxes into an 'I knew it' one as she continues. "Just testing out different combinations of herbs to see what works best…" she replies with a glance at her own basket to probably gauge what she already has before snipping away at some more herbs. "Bruises?" she echoes, not quite facing her friend. "There's already some for that, y'know. Did you need some?"

Vani is a-okay with the not facing each other. It makes talking about her health issues a little more comfy, and she remembers Lorawyn loves talking about this kind of thing in inconvienent places. "There's stuff for bruises?" She actually asks, sounding surprised. Everytime she comes to Lorawyn for help, the healer delivers! WHAT A FRIEND! "And yeah…" Now she sounds a little sheepish. "Is there a herb that prevents bruises as well?" Cos that's equally important.

It's not Lorawyn's fault that she's pretty much always 'on' when it comes to her craft. It's her passion, after all. And Vani just makes it really easy to talk about it anywhere~ Though she might think it's pretty obvious that there would be stuff for bruises, Lorawyn supposes it's actually not common knowledge. "I can get you some once I'm done here," she tells her, piling a smile handful of herbs into her basket before turning to look at Vani with the change in her tone. "Prevents?" Lorawyn peeeeers over at her friend. "No… but why?"

Rather sheepishly Vani looks about to ensure that those gardeners are still gardening and not paying attention to their little corner of the herb beds. "Caelisth went up the other day…" And with that as a 'prep' talk she removes her jacket to reveal the tank and the slowly fading bruises underneath. "Ohanaveth won…" She shares a little more quietly. "Hal doesn't like these." Apparently she's not paying them much mind, other than that she'd like not to have them so A'hali doesn't get angry again.

Luckily for Vani, those gardeners are well away from the main area of the medicinal herb beds, having left Lorawyn to her own devices — by her preference. They are quite secluded in this area. The healer makes a little 'o' shape with her lips when Vani tells her of what happened… or at least what is implied. Her gaze drifts over the bruises with a healer's eye, expression becoming a bit more serious. She hums thoughtfully before letting out a soft sigh. "I don't have anything to prevent bruises, unfortunately, just things to help bruises heal faster." She looks quite apologetic for that, really wishing that she could help her friend but unable to. There's only so much she can do.

Do the magic Lora, DO THE MAGIC!

SHE'S NOT A MAGICIAN, VANI.

:(

And the bruises on her arms aren't all that bad compared to the ones on her back. "I'll need some of that. The faster healing stuff." Her face has gone a little wooden with the control she is exerting. "Hal really doesn't like them." She re-iterates before shrugging her jacket on once more. "I'm scared he won't let Ohanaveth chase Caelisth any more…" It's not the physical that is bringing down the greenrider, it's the emotional. "And I kind of liked it." Vani once more proves her mastery of severe understatement.

"Then you'll get it. As much as you need." There's benefits to being friends with a healer after all~! Lorawyn will certainly do what she can, at least, to make up for what she can't. There's a bit of a frown for Vani's reiteration of A'hali's dislike of the bruises. "I mean… it's not like he can really control whether or not Ohanaveth chases, right?" Not being a dragonrider herself, it's difficult for her to understand dragon biology, as much as she might want to learn it. "And… you wouldn't want someone else to catch her, right? Though I know it's not always in your control…" She does get that at the very least.

Now that her concealing jacket is resettled, she reaches out to give Lorawyn's arm a thankful squeeze. "I'd really appreciate it." Vani adds verbal thanks to her non-verbal one. "I think he's scared that he will hurt me." And the bruises remind him of how much power he has to control. "And it doesn't hurt at all… It certainly didn't hurt at the time…." Vani stumbles her way through her side of the problem, apparently now that she has treatment, she's going to confide in her healer-friend. "And I'm resigned…" She shakes her head. "I'm okay with Caelisth being caught by others. For a long time I wasn't. But for a brief moment it was all four of us…and… I don't think anything could compare to that."

Lorawyn gives her friend a return arm squeeze, in addition to what is hopefully a reassuring smile. Then she's back to frowning, moving to turn around and sit with her back against the side of the herb bed as she's listening. "Well… I've heard that dragon lust can be a very uh… heady thing, so the adrenaline or whatever is going on is probably preventing you from feeling pain at the time that it happens…" The wheels are obviously turning in her head right now. "And of course you told him your thoughts on this matter…" Because this is Vani and A'hali we're talking about. Then she sighs, giving her friend another arm squeeze. "I wish there was more I could do for you…" But she's totally here to be an open ear!

Vani rolls her eyes at her friend. OF course they talked about it. "Hal can be…stubborn. Particularly when he gets an idea in his head." And then she sighs. "It doesn't help that he knows about my childhood…" All of it, perhaps more than anyone else. "But it's not the same thing at all…" Vani sounds quietly sure on that fact. "Heady is inadequate. But I don't think any words are adequate." The smile that settles on her lips doesn't really do justice to the magic of it either. "This is not the conclusion I was hoping for." Vani admits, the smile slipping away as she sighs again.

Lorawyn hums thoughtfully, nodding with understanding. She's certainly met a stubborn person or two (or a million) so she knows how that can be. There's a quick glance for the greenrider at the mention of her childhood, something that the healer doesn't know all the details of. There's yet another sigh for Vani's last. "I figured not but… I think the best thing to do in this case is just keep talking to him… regardless of how stubborn he is." Then shoulders rise and lift in a brief shrug. "Maybe ask Ohanaveth for his advice." Because who knows the brownrider better than his dragon, right?

"I could try…" Vani considers. "Ohanaveth is shy…" Among other things, but she does have a great deal of affection for her weyrmates lifemate as well. Clearly Vani is going to come away with this with a great deal of thought… and hopefully some magic herbal remedy that will MAGICALLY heal all of her flight boo-boos. "You still really boring? Work and that is it?" Vani changes the topic without subtlety. But they're friends, so Lorawyn understands right?

"No harm in trying," Lorawyn says helpfully. Poor Vani's definitely got her work cut out for her. A stubborn weyrmate and his shy lifemate… She definitely does not envy her friend. And Vani will be sorely disappointed by Lorawyn's rather NORMAL herbal remedies that will only HELP. There's an eyebrow raise for Vani's change in topic, however, and not because of its suddenness. "Yes. Quite boring, I'm afraid. As you say, just work for me." She never changes~

"I should do something about that." Vani announces, pulling on that mask of hers to grin wickedly at Lorawyn. "Take you somewhere really fancy for drinks or something. I'm a real grown up dragon rider now! No restrictions or anything!" Which really, she has been for a while, but she's been keeping her distance in case Lorawyn is still hurting. "What are you doing tonight?" No time like the present to get all up in Lorawyn's business right?

Loraywn looks over at Vani's grinning quite skeptically, wondering what her friend has planned in that head of hers. "We can't just go to the 'Kitten like normal people? Why does it have to be fancy?" There's almost a roll of her eyes there, but it doesn't seem like it's an absolute no at least. And it's been months… she can't hurt forever. As for the last question, "Um… work?" Vani should've expected that answer. That's why she's gathering all these herbs in the first place!

"Because it is fun to go somewhere different every once and a while!" Vani proclaims brightly. "And I'm less likely to run into that bloody pirate in Ista or Nerat." She admits a little more quietly, although there isn't the heat in the word pirate like there normally is. Even that is a changing as the months go by. "Well…" Vani isn't inclined to encourage Lorawyn to play hooky like she would certain other people. "When do you have a night off next?" Is Lorawyn prepared for this to be a thing? Cos it is totally going to be a thing if Vani gets her way.

There's a bit of squinting at Vani's overly bright tones from Lorawyn, and then a light laugh for her friend's admission about not wanting to run into a certain pirate. Or, ex-pirate rather. Then she shrugs, "I mean, it's not official work or anything…" she admits. It is all self-imposed work, all the herb experiments that she does, though a Master does help her from time to time. Her regular shifts are usually limited to 'daytime'.

Vani grins again. "Oh…Well. If it's not official work, I unofficially give you permission to tell it to fuck off tonight." There's the Vani we all know and love. "Oh…" A thought occurs to her as she rubs her arms. "Perhaps we should choose somewhere a bit cooler." Cos running around in leathers in Southern, REALLY isn't fun. "You like beer right? Had any Telgar ones? They have the best." And she'll do her best to convince her friend that this is a totally awesome idea.
