Shard it! Be careful!

Star Stones

The climb up here on foot is steep, narrow stone steps carved high into the sandstone, and from the top the precipice-drop to the jagged-craggy stones far, far below is treacherous. It's a wide sweep of ledge, a dragonlength and a half jutting out from a rough cliff wall. The wind here is ceaseless, dusty-dry during daytimes and biting at night. But for those who brave the climb to this lookout perched high above the Weyr's bowl, the view from these sandy-red rocks is breathtaking. Igen stretches wide-wide-wide around, a vast expanse of deep blue lake and lush green swamp and the myriad rust-rich colours of desert and rock. The real purpose of this spot, though, is highlighted not in its view of what is below but its view of what is above. Three tall rocks stand, one balanced across the tops of the other two, at the focal point of the ledge, perpetually framing one slice of the desert sky beyond.

She had scaled every height she could think of, the star stones were the last place she could think to scale. Ziniel was just about to give up the search when there it was. A glint. A shine. A small little sparkle. Could it be? She'd have to be very careful as she walked the ledge to the far end.

The wind sweeps past at a clip that causes the girl to wobble just a little. Woops. Careful there Zini. she chides herself as she catches her balance and takes a quick look down. Such an exhilirating view really, and wouldn't this be a grand place to hang her silks? No. Probably not. She manages to reach the other end of the ledge. Is it? Yes! It has to be!

The small bauble is lovely to look at, but tricky to pry out of where it had been wedged. The grin is almost a rictus as she concentrates on getting it free. When it at last pulls free, Ziniel is forced to take a step back and to wave her arms just a touch.

Shard it all! Be careful! Another silent, self reprimand. Returning the way she'd come is easier, than getting out to where the bauble was. Once on the ground, Ziniel's off and running. If she's not quick she'll miss curfew, and having broken curfew once before it's not something that the girl's inclined to do again. Though it takes a long time for her to get her nerves under control enough to step through the door, and into the barracks. Made it! she thinks to herself as she skites quickly to her cot.
