Council Room

Spacious, this room is cut from the same scale as the living caverns: vast and given to inspiring awe for those who enter. The floor is tiled in a shining cross-hatch of dark and light, an ironic chessboard setting for the looming and overlarge council table. Weathered it is, long and rectangular, with a matching sideboard twice again as long as it is. This is a room for meetings, for work, for decisions: such is evident by the hearth in the corner, and the always-fresh pot of klah.

Summer in Southern is an experience, mostly because it is so hot you either live through it or transfer out. Th'res is the former part of that statement able to walk around in his black riding leather in the one hundred degree heat with little problem. He enters the Council room and stands at attention waiting to be recognized by the Current Weyrleader, for there afternoon meeting. He has a stack of roster hides under one arm. His boots are polished to a shine, as well as the metal shoulder pauldron.

Weyrleader M'kel is sitting at one end of the large table. He too has a well-shined pair of boots and is wearing leathers, though his jacket is over the back of his chair, revealing a white shirt. He also has a collection of hides, and he's scanning one of them when Th'res enters the room, but sets it down when the wingleader enters, and looks up. "Ah, Th'res. Sit down. You understand that I'm working my way through the wings with these meetings? So, let's start with your readiness report on Lynx. Do you have it there?"

Th'res snaps a salute, always one for protocol, before saying "Yes sir, here is my active roster, as well as injured and number of deaths in the few months." Handing the reports over he will sit down in the seat indicated waiting patiently. He glances at the work the Weyrleader has saying "Not long into the role and they got you stacked down already huh, sir?"

"What?" M'kel looks momentarily puzzled. "Oh, the hidework? It's an important part of the job, even if there does seem to be a phenomenal amount of it here. I'm sure I didn't have as much as Weyrleader of Telgar. But that was before the Pass. Ah, thank you." He reaches for the hides and starts to scan. Without looking up, he says, "Why don't you give me the highlights? And how long are your injured expected to be out for?"

Th'res leans back a little in the chair saying "Two browns out for a month, one bronze should be returning to duty in the next seven. Those are the major issues, the rest are just on a down time cycle and should be ready when the call happens." He holds up another hide saying "if the fall predictions are to be believed, that is. But Lynx is ever ready for any surprises." He has a lot of pride in that saying, since his wing was the least hit only loosing a handful to the silvery menace.

M'kel nods. "A down time cycle. Interesting." He says it as one might name a rare and noxious disease, then considers it for a moment, but continues, "But your casualties are low. Relatively speaking. And your new riders? How are they integrating with the wing? You have them all tapped now?" A glance at the roster follows.

Th'res gives a grin saying "most of them, still a few stragglers but should be wrapped up in another day or so. Had a few issues with some of the transfers but nothing that can't be worked out with either a good sit down or a good sparing match." He looks over at the Weyrleader "Some times boys just got to get there anger out ya know.."

M'kel listens impassively to the wingleader's account of the ex-weyrlings, but raises his eyebrows at the rest of the report. "Issues with the transfers? What kind of issues? If you're referring to the transfers from Telgar, they should know better than to cause any trouble." Which maybe a teensy bit of wishful thinking on M'kel's part. "It sounds as if you're taking a pragmatic approach, anyway."

Th'res nods and gives him a toothy grin "Oh just some, points of view differences. Such as women in the wing and their places and such. I am all for people having there own opinion and even voicing that opinion from time to time. But at least in Lynx if you can fly you can fight, doesn't matter what swings between your legs as far as I am concerned."

"Really." M'kel's response is distinctly cool. "Well, it's clear what your view of their place is. And perhaps, as there are so many to deal with here, the lower tier wings are the best place for them. But tell me. Lynx is a mid-weight wing overall with a good mix of colours. How do you find the stamina of your blues and greens? I understand it was my predecessor's policy that they should all swap out for half of every Fall."

Th'res nods and looks over at the Weyrleader, he plays a lot of dragon poker so gauging people is second nature to him, "Well until recently we have been, but since we have been so short-handed I have made my own call on the matter. Should the higher wings be on top of things and giving good coverage. Most of our blues and greens can go a whole fall if needed, if it is a heavy one then I switch the others out on an as needed basis." He will add "And I only ever switch out when Jedameth, who is large enough to compete with some of the browns as far as stamina, tells me he needs rest. And even then we are still actively watching and calling shots until it is done."

M'kel's eyebrows rise again. "So you - and Lynx - have not been observing that policy? And my predecessor allowed his orders to be disregarded?" His tone is one of disbelief, but he seems to be assuming an affirmative answer. He fixes Th'res with a stare, then folds his arms. "Wingleader, although I happen to prefer your approach to his, I am still assessing what is the best policy to adopt, given the characteristics of Southern's dragon population. It is quite clear to me that there have been some deficiencies in discipline in this Weyr, and my predecessor has apparently condoned this. But that has changed. While there is a ruling that blue and green dragons will only fly half a Fall, you will observe it. With the exception of yourself, that is: it is ridiculous for a wingleader not to be able to lead his wing. Do I make myself clear?"

Th'res gives the man a nod and a smile "Yes sir. Clear as Crystal opal sir!" He may of just gotten scolded but Th'res just takes it in stride, no point getting worked up about things that can be fixed "I will have my seconds spread the word at this afternoons drills. Would you be wanting to attend sir? Today we are doing free climbing and rescue drills."

"Free climbing and rescue… " M'kel sounds puzzled yet again at such bizarre activities. "This is part of your physical training? It sounds like a risky way of getting exercise. But good for the stamina, perhaps - and teamwork?" He thinks for a moment. "I won't join you, but please don't let me hear of any of your riders on the injury list because they fell off a cliff." He sits up a little straighter - if such a thing were possible given his ramrod spine. "Now, what's your assessment of your wingseconds?"

Th'res nods "It is part of our other duties, as we don't just fight Thread we also cover all search and rescue along with maintaining talks with wildlings." He tilts his head saying "Right now I have the one, Br'gil, who while is capable at paperwork and discipline but he really shines during fall. I am looking to tap A'kehm now that he is back from helping with the Weyrlings for the job."

M'kel shakes his head, showing some annoyance. "Ah, all these other things your wings do! I understood Lynx was involved in exploration and map-making. So that's three wings involved in search and rescue - I'm suprised there's so much of it to be done. We need to make sure these sidelines aren't a distraction from the real work." He picks up a pen and makes a note on one of his documents. "And A'kehm, you say?" He keeps writing, then looks up. "A bronzerider, big man? I don't know him yet but I know who you mean. He should have the necessary experience." He puts his pen down again. "And are there any problems in the wing that I should know about?"

Th'res nods about A'kehm "Yep that is him." He thinks abit saying "Currently no. Like I said before there was some culture shock to deal with when the transfers came in but we have all meshed well into the unit." He looks over at the Weyrleader saying "Anything I can do for you? I know your still settling in and there is a lot to catch up on. I don't mind helping out."

"Thank you," M'kel says, but doesn't make any requests at this point. "Culture shock, eh? Well, that's understandable, given the differences." He's no doubt experienced a certain amount of that himself. "No doubt things will be less irregular in time. That will be all, then. Clear skies." He stands up, a clear sign that this interview is over.

Th'res nods stands up and gives the man a sharp salute saying "Clear Skies Weyrleader" before he turns and heads for the door. Unless the Weyrleader has anything to say the Wing leader will be on his way as there is much work to be done. Such as making sure he snags the last of the weyrlings for his wing and of course hunting down A'kehm to give him all the responsibility of helping herd Lynx.
