Central Bazaar

Cradled, childlike, in an easterly mountainous embrace, the steppes of the central bowl nestle cozily between lake and weyr. The latticework of dusty adobe paths spider out from the southerly Weyr Road, the wagon-ruts of which curve lazily to the northeastern bazaar, the adobe sprawl of the New Weyr reflected in the lake that dominates a large portion of outdoor Igen. A small footpath, just as abused, ambles away from the shores, travelling over rock and hill to the northern dragonet complex and branching itself due west to end at the entrance of the blessedly cool inner caverns. One cracked path, faint with disuse, leads southeast to the crumbling ruins of Igen-that-was. All around, the dizzying heights of the caldera's sharp-sloped sides are pocked here and there with ledges, the weyrs' draconic occupants needing no path to guide their way.
It is the fortieth day of Spring and 86 degrees. It is bright and sunny. The only evidence of the overnight storm is in the lingering mud puddles.

As the sun starts to set, a green and her rider glide down from above and land with a certain grace that Akitith has somehow managed to achieve over the last couple of months or so. Once the dragon is still, the young rider slides down, only barely missing a puddle. Selaine glares down at the puddle and then back up at her green, "Are you trying to get mud on me, you silly dragon?" In reply, the dragon splashes a puddle in front of her with a front leg, getting a couple of mud droplets on the girl's face. Some passerbys snicker as they rush past. Selaine rolls her eyes at the green as she rubs the mud of her face. The two continue to bicker within the central bowl as weyrfolk make their way through even as Selaine checks the straps after a long day.

"You'll be happy enough for the water when the summer is commin' again." Terrian's slow rolling voice breaks out as he strides closer to the green dragon and her rider. An off white hankechief is offered up, for the mud which has flecked her face.

At the sound of the voice, Selaine turns to see one of the guardsmen. There's a slight grin as she thankfully accepts the handkerchief. "Don't I know it." she replies, using the handkerchief to wipe her face. "It's getting pretty warm as it is…" she comments. "I don't believe we've ever actually spoken before… I'm Selaine, and this is Akitith."

"Well met Selaine, Akitith. Guardsman Terrian." Terrian nods to the green dragon, and steps back to examine the creature more fully. "Aye, though still cool enough to make walkin' the bazaar plesant. You comin' to do some shoppin' lass?"

"Well met, Terrian." Selaine returns the greeting, smile widening. Having finished wiping off the mud, she holds up the handkerchief. "Thank you for this, I'll wash it off before I return it to you." That said, she pockets the cloth. There's a nod of agreement from her about the weather. "So it is, I might in a bit, yes. Just got done with a sweep. I might grab a bite to eat before then." she tells him, stretching a bit.

Terrian nods as the hankerchief is pocketed. "Just drop it off at the guardhouse, they'll see it into my desk." Turning, Terrian casts his gaze out over the the bazaar. "If you're lookin' for a nice place, mayhap you'll come with me down to Madame Ravene's? I think she's cookin' her pastries this afternoon."

"I'll do that." Selaine keeps that in her memory at his instructions. She'd never been to the guardhouse but she was sure she would be able to find it easily enough. At his suggestion, she perks up, "Oh? That does sound ideal. I'd love to join you."

Terrian holds out an arm for the woman, a simple gentleman gesture. "You would be one've them what was impressin' this last time around, aye?" He'll lead the way deeper into the bazaar if she takes his arm.

With a mental farewell to her dragon, Selaine takes up Terrian's arm. "Yes! I was one of them." she replies as she easily follows his lead. "The first to Impress, actually." she tells him, chuckling softly at the memory.

"Isn't there some bit of lore what goes into what dragon is choosin' first?" Light curiosity from the guard. His smart walking shoes makes a particular rattle on the stone of the bazaar, a distinctiveness that sets him apart. Once they are out of sight of the green dragon a dark creature slips out from a shadow to fall right in at Terrian's side, letting out a low woof! of greeting. Hai person.

"Is there?" Selaine muses in response to his question. "I was not aware such a thing even existed… I'm not as familiar with some of the lore… I didn't grow up in a weyr, y'see." she explains as they continue. The dark creature's greeting momentarily catches her by surprise. "Oh! Is he yours?" she asks, looking to Terrian.

"Of course you can be sayin' hi." Terrian says this to the dog who then pops right around the other side to now walk by Selaine. hiiiii the wagging tail seems to say. "You can be pettin' her, name's Novak. I'll admit to not knowin' much about you weyr folk. Got some blue riders what'll grab some drinks with me now and again, though I ain't seen them in a while. And Novak ain't a fan of the dragons herself."

"Oh! It's a she. Hi Novak." Selaine greets the dog, leaning down slightly to pet her. After straightening herself, she giggles lightly. "I'm not so familiar, myself. Only what I've learned these last couple of Turns." she admits. "And why doesn't she?" Selaine asks, curious as to why the dog wouldn't like dragons. "Sure, they can be intimidating.. but they're gentle… Most of them."

"Gentle but with big teeth. I'm thinkin' I'll be seein' if one of you riders can be takin' in a pup of hers, see if rasin' it from a little one might be enough to ward off that fear." Novak is alllll over the love she's getting, and when it stops, isn't above begging for it by licking the hand that WAS petting her. Terrian misses this misdeed by his well trained pooch, as he's steering them towards a particular baker's shop.

Selaine giggles again. "Teeth that know where they can and can't be." She replies. And the talk of a pup, her eyes light up. "Oh really? I might be interested in that…" even as she says that, the young rider is slightly distracted by the licking. Giving the dog what she whats, she pets Novak again, giggling. "Oh, sorry Novak."

"Novak…" Terrian glances down at the dog, an upraised eyebrow. The dog is all sorts of innocent there, she's just getting loved, there isn't anything wrong with that? RIGHT? Shaking his head he opens up the doorway to the bakery. "How can I be gettin' in touch when she's ready for pups? I was hopin' to ask N'cal or Erissa, but they've been out of touch."

Selaine grins up at Terrian, "It's ok." she tells him, continuing to pet her as much as she can as they make their way into the bakery. "I'm always around… just send a messenger or a 'lizard to come find me when she's ready. I can't say much for the others, though."

That's the best that Terrian can hope for, and he knows it. When the pair enter the bakery the dog gets some special instructions. "Under," and he points at one of the tables. RELUCTANTLY the dog dives under, keeping down the dog fur in the baker's shop. "Ravene! Two of your pastries aye?" The baker is met with a large smile.

Selaine watches as the dog listens obediently and dives under the table. The girl makes herself comfortable and waits as Terrian orders their pastries. "So how long have you been at Igen?" she asks, curious.

"Just over a year. Longest I've ever sunk roots anywhere." Terrian's a wanderer at heart, but there's a pesky thing called an oath, and so far he hasn't seen fit to step outside of it. The baker delivers said pastries and Terrian hands off a cloth with one on it to the greenrider. "Came not long before they started snatchin' all you up for those eggs."

Selaine takes the pastry gratefully and starts digging in as Terrian speaks. "Oh! That's almost as long as I've been here then… I got Searched as soon as I came to Igen." she tells him, before taking a bite of the delicious pastry.

"Oh? So you didn't have a chance to get to know the bazaar at all did you?" Terrian's tone seems to think that this is a bit of a shame as he pulls out a chair at the table where Novak is sitting hidden.

"Not at the time, no." Selaine replies. "I've explored it a couple times since graduating but not much." she admits, "But sweeps keep me pretty busy. And now there's these bandits to worry about."

Novak takes this moment to lick at any exposed skin that Selaine might be showing. Because… she can. And Terrian's talking so she thinks she can get away with it. "All work and no play is making a pretty lass like yourself dull. Mayhap when you got some time I can be showin' you the best places to be findin' fun."

One hand had been resting on her knee and so Novak manages to lick her free hand while the other is occupied with the pastry. The girl giggles again at the feel of the dog's tongue. Distracted by the dog, Terrian's comment catches her off guard and she blushes at the compliment. Selaine giggles again. "Sure, that sounds fun."

"She's lickin' you ain't she?" Terrian's tone is a bit rueful. "She'll never be quite the guard dog as long as I can't seem to keep her from lovin' on anyone what will give her half a chance." Pastry flecks have stuck in Terrian's beard, and he flicks them away.

Selaine grins. "Well… I'm sure she can work up to it?" She chuckles as she gives the dog another pet before bringing her hand back up and finishing her pastry.

"Aye well." Terrian reaches out a toe and taps it on the dog's side, a silent I-see-you. "She'll be learning or not. If not her then the pups." Training really isn't an exact science after all.

There's another soft chuckle from the greenrider. "I imagine it's pretty difficult to train them?" Selaine wouldn't know. "I don't see many dogs around here. Is it because of the dragons?"

"Traders, mostly. And the herders. No use keepin' around animals usually what aren't earnin' their keep." Novak transfers her attention to the guard, more than happy to get it from her person too. Terrian pops the last bit of pastry with a grin.

"Ah, I see." Selaine comments, also eating the last bit of her pastry. "That was delicious! I really should come here more often… I usually just go to the living caverns."

"Ravene has a talent that is to be envied." The guard casts a look over to the baker, winking. Pastries done though, it's time to be getting back to work. "Out," And he offers Selaine a hand up.

"So it would seem." Selaine replies, glancing over at the baker before down at Terrian's offered hand. Her own placed in his, the young greenrider gets up from the table. "Thank you for taking me here. I really enjoyed it."

Terrian is the perfect gentleman, and will walk Selaine out of the bakery before noding his head. "I'll be seein' you around greenrider Selaine." A tap of his thigh brings Novak right to her place at his side as he takes a route towards the guardhouse.

"That you will, Guardsman Terrian." Selaine says as they're outside the bakery. "Bye Novak!" she bids the two farewell and returns to her green.
