Welcome to Southern Weyr's Search Portal. PLEASE take a moment to read the information on these pages, especially under the Search Methods and Info tabs, as they contain a lot of details about SW's Search that you'll be expected to know as a Candidate.

Traditional Search

So you've come to check out our standard/traditional search methods. This is pretty much going to resemble what any Pern game player is used to. The idea behind Traditional Search is that a player has a character they think would make a good dragonrider; they apply for to be a Candidate; throughout Candidacy, they interact with SearchCo, their fellow Candidates, and the Weyr. At the end of the PC Search Cycle, there's a Hatching and the Candidates who Impress will receive an Inspiration from SearchCo!

What makes Traditional Search so unique? It's entirely the experience of Candidacy, the interaction between dragonet and Candidate during the Hatching, and the receiving of an Inspiration at the end!

That being said, Traditional Search is not for everyone! Especially veteran players who don't desire the Inspiration. If you're looking for alternative methods, check out how to get involved as an Insta Candidate or Insta Weyrling!

Insta Candidacy

The purpose of insta-Candidacy is to allow people that would like to Impress on-camera, but they don't necessarily want a fully written dragon inspiration.

NPC Search Cycle

Southern Weyr will accept insta-Candidates for all NPC cycles, WITH THE EXCEPTION of NPC cycles that fall while there are still weyrlings from a full, PC Clutch.

  1. Applicant understands that a PC, on-camera Search may not happen.
  2. Applicant understands that an Insta-Candidate during an NPC Cycle is more of a Build Your Own Experience: as there is very little support given during an NPC Cycle.
  3. Applicant understands that Weyrlinghood is also a Build Your Own Experience: A/WLMs may or may not be available, but if there are A/WLM PCs, they can certainly be asked for scenes, but the structure that comes around a PC Weyrlinghood is absent during an NPC one.
  4. Insta Candidate Applications are sent to *sws during an NPC Cycle.
  5. Insta Candidate Impressions will not happen _on-camera_. They will be requested as any other insta via the @rubyq.

Please fill out the NPC cycle application and mail it to *sws for consideration.

  • You should have reviewed the Search materials for Southern Weyr on the wiki as well as the posted copy of the Search Info Pack. We /highly/ recommend you read and understand this package before submitting your application.

ADDITION Be sure you have also reviewed our goldrider policies (http://harpers-tale.wikidot.com/southern-staff:goldrider-policy) and Southern's activity policies (http://harpers-tale.wikidot.com/southern-staff:activity-policies).

  • Be thorough and clear in your answers! The easier it is for us to read, the happier we are. And yes, spelling and formatting do count. You'll get major brownie points if we're able to understand you without having to squint :)
  • Be honest! Don't worry about trying to tell us what we want to hear; we'd rather know what you think, and you don't have to agree with us totally on everything! Be interesting, imaginative, innovative, and informative. A well thought-out application that lets your personality shine through comes over better than one that's tailored towards being Politically Correct.
  • If you are not a current resident of Southern, be sure you have your area leaders' permission BEFORE you submit the application! Please check your area's policy section on the wiki to ensure compliance!
  • Please don't rush through it, but please, please, please don't wait until the last minute, either. This is not to say skimp on any answers just to get it done, but if we can devote more attention to individual applications rather than getting 20 of them in the last few days of OOC Search, well… we'll be happier.

Restrictions

If you are interested in Search (whether traditional or insta), make sure you fit the following criteria:

  • The character must be between 15 and 25 turns old.
  • The character must be unwed.
  • The character must be physically healthy enough to care for a dragonet.
  • The character must be affiliated with an area.
  • The character may not be a Craftmaster or Lord/Lady.
  • Only female characters may ride gold dragons.
  • Only male characters may ride bronze dragons.
  • No character may ever Impress a white dragon.
  • The player must not be planning on insta'ing a dragon (including alts) within the period of Search.

Insta-Candidate Application

Insta Weyrling

Note: We will only be accepting insta-weyrling applications for this PC Clutches after the Hatching.

Insta-weyrlings are special insta-riders that are applied for after a PC or NPC Hatching and begin their on-camera life as a weyrling.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • Insta-weyrlings do not come with Inspirations; you are responsible for writing your own dragon.
  • Insta-weyrling spots are subject to the availability of the Clutch size.
  • Insta-weyrling applications will be available until the dragons of that NPC/PC cycle are graduated out of weyrlinghood. If you would still like an Insta rider of an older NPC clutch that still has slots available, please apply as an Insta Rider.

Application

Please @send this application to *sws. Be as thorough as possible.

  1. Please provide your character's name and age.
    • Note: Character name should include both pre- and post-Impression names. (Billy -> B'ill)
  2. Please provide the details of the dragon you're requesting:
    • Age
    • Name
    • Color
      • Note: If there are no available dragons of your desired color from the Clutch, your request will be denied. Check the Hatching Records to be sure your color is available.
    • Size
    • Description
  3. Please provide a brief history of the character's life before Candidacy, how they handled Candidacy, and how you think they will handle being a weyrling at Southern Weyr.
  4. Please give us an idea of what your dragon is like? (A formal Inspiration is not required, just some background information on the dragon, what his/her personality is like, etc.)
  5. Why did you pick Southern Weyr? What expectations do you have?
  6. What would you bring to Southern ICly and OOCly?
  7. Do you have anything else that you'd like to tell us?

Inspiration Template

OPTIONALLY, once your character is approved, you can use the template below to add their info to the wiki. If you have questions about this, feel free to snag a staff member. :)

Candidate Infopak

Welcome to Candidacy

Welcome to Southern. We're excited to have you, whether you've been here before or not. As with all new roles, candidacy has a few logistics, advice, suggestions, and general recommendations to go with it, so that's what this is for — to make the transition into this new role as painless (and question-free) as possible.

Please come to us with any questions you might have. We're here to answer them (or point you to a person who knows the answer). Any member of SearchCo can help you!

SearchCo Lead: Amani
SearchCo Members: Alyna, Ibrahim, Z'bor, Th'res

Setup

A few things should have been done when you were Searched. A searchrider should have brought you to the SW candidate barracks and run a command that did the following:

  • Added you to the candidate channel [<+CatToys+>] with alias 'cat'.
  • Added you to the area's RP channel [<+Sweltering+>] with alias 'swel'.
  • Added you to the area's chatter channel [<+Heatstroke+>] with alias 'heat'.
  • Added you to the candidate mailer *cattoys and the area mailer *sw.
  • Tweaked your title to include Candidate.
  • @residented & @sethome'd you in the barracks.

Here's what you should do:

  • Turn on the area channels: 'heat on' and/or 'swel on'
  • Add a blurb to your @wearing or @knot message which describes your new knot of plain old candidate's white.
  • @subscribe *ann, which is the game's announcement mailer.

If you have any questions regarding these instructions, please ask a member of SearchCo! Confusion, while a nice, giddy state of mix-up, is not generally conducive to good relations.

OOC Info

Your primary points of contact throughout Search are going to be Co members:

SearchCo Lead: Amani
SearchCo Members: Alyna, Ibrahim, Z'bor, Th'res

If you have questions, comments, or concerns, please go to them first. After that, your main contacts will be Southern Weyr staff:

Current Staff: Amani, M'noq & R'zel

Please keep in mind that, although SearchCo is here for you, they're also here for all the other Candidates. Any info you share with Co is considered confidential; any info anyone else shares is treated similarly.

IC Expectations

Candidates are generally treated as individuals who need something to do while going through the necessity of waiting for the eggs to crack. They also need to be familiarized with the running of the Weyr and the work which will be involved should they chance to Impress a dragon.

Rules

These are the IC rules for Candidacy. You can assume they are posted in the barracks and are considered common knowledge. Please read below for info about breaking these rules / ICA=ICC.

  1. Candidates are required to live in the barracks.
  2. Candidates must complete their chores daily.
  3. No alcohol.
  4. No sex.
  5. No fighting.
  6. No leaving the Weyr without a dragonrider escort.
  7. Candidates must salute all dragonriders, and must address everyone by their title (unless specifically given liberty to do otherwise).

Chores

Candidates will have assigned chores. The Headwoman is traditionally in charge of issuing these chores, but others can as well — in this regard candidates are at the bottom of the totem pole; they have to do the drudge work.

These chores can include sewing, mending, mucking out the stables, seeing to the general tidiness and readiness of the Weyr, cooking, helping riders care for their dragons if requested, and just about any other chore that you can think of.

Candidates with skillsets are often put to work with those skills. Harpers might give lessons, Healers will continue working in the infirmary, stablehands will keep on mucking stalls, and so on.

Leaving the Weyr

Candidates are allowed to leave the Weyr for short periods of time (up until about a sevenday before the Hatching is expected).

They'll need to have a rider know where they are, and cannot stay away too long (having the rider with you is even more advised - quick transport back if need be), and so forth, but they do have that freedom. And an NPC rider works just as well as a PC, but it's much more fun with real people!

Pranks

The Weyr is generally lenient about harmless pranks. However, there are limits, and please use common sense when judging what a good prank would be.

ICly, a candidate is not likely to do something which would get them expelled from the Weyr; this could happen, ICly, and has!

In particular, if your character plans to sneak onto the Sands, please clear it with SearchCo and the clutchparents first. This is grounds for expulsion.

ICA=ICC

We are big fans of ICA=ICC (in character actions = in character consequences). You don't always have to ask or give warnings when you plan for your character to do something stupid, but be aware that the consequences could be equally as un-fun to you as your original action was to others.

Use common sense. We cannot stress that phrase enough.

Rank & Saluting

Rank is important in the wide world of the Weyr, especially at Southern. Candidates will be expected to salute all dragonriders, and to address all members of the Weyr by their appropriate title.

If someone asks your character not to do this, then yay! But be aware of the expectation.

Hatching Day Etiquette

You've almost made it! Candidacy is nearing the end, and while SearchCo and Candidate interaction probably has thinned by this time (We are all busy writing dragons!), this is the last chance to get in any Candidate memories before the big day!

A few things to note:

When you hear the dragons start to hum, it's unmistakeable. 300+ dragons thrumming at the same time makes the whole Weyr shake. Then you should proceed back to the Candidate Barracks where there will be riders there to escort you onto the sands. By this time you should have a robe desced and ready to put on. Don't wear the robe all day either, you wouldn't want to get it dirty doing last minute chores now would you? There, the riders will explain again what will be happening and give you last minute instructions on what to do, where to go, etc.

Remember not to bring any items or pets with you onto the sands. Clear your inventory and turn all puppets off to keep the lag down. Be sure your @wearing is set to a white-robed desc!

Hatching Day Rules…

If you are familiar with HT's Hatching Day Etiquette, skip down to the FAQ to look for the new stuff!

  • OOC Attendance. SearchCo will make every effort to schedule the Hatching when as many people as possible can be there. If you can't make it, please plan to have someone log you in and move you to the Sands.
    • You must be online and on the Sands to Impress. If you cannot be there and cannot get someone to puppet you, please let SearchCo know.
    • Please note: The wizards get cranky if we have to ask them to @move candidates to the Sands all the time. You can help solve this by doing the following: '@set me.carry_ok to 1' This way we can move you to the Sands ourselves and save a lot of hassle in the event we need to connect you to a dragon and you're not online!
  • AFK. Please let us know on the Candidate channel if you have to AFK. We will do what we can to juggle our schedule if you're meant to Impress.
  • OOC Impression. SearchCo will determine who does or does not Impress prior to the hatching by a vote. Only SearchCo knows who will be getting a dragon before the actual event. Everyone else, you included, will be left out of the loop until your character Impresses, or the hatching ends.
    • Immediately after the hatching, at least a couple members of SearchCo will be around to answer any questions you may have. Please remember that we'll be as tired as you after the hatching, and we expect everyone involved to be courteous. Don't feel you need to get all your questions in then, however. We will make ourselves available for questions during the week following the hatching, and sometimes it's better to hold a question until emotions have had time to cool down. SearchCo will endeavor to give constructive and fair feedback, but if the discussion gets too heated, SearchCo will request a small recess.
    • Questions on why you did not Impress, if you did not Impress, must be held for at least 24 hours before contacting the person who's denoted as the specific Point of Contact for questions. Any other Co members will only be able to refer you back to that person/those people.
  • Candidate Channel. During the Hatching, leave the candidate channel on. You can turn off all your other channels, but we ask that you leave this one on. Additionally, we ask that it is used only and specifically for necessary information.
    • Not for congratulations.
    • Not for oohs and ahhs over the hatchling descs.
    • Not for chit-chat.
  • Quick Suggestions.
    • Turn off globals. @set me.want_globals to 0 and (after the Hatching) change it back with @set me.want_globals to 1.
    • Turn off all your other channels. LEAVE THE CANDIDATE CHANNEL ON.
    • Don't correct your poses. If you typo, leave it alone. No one logging is going to go back and fix it, and no one is going to mind if you typoed something.
    • Try to minimize your emits and pose length. Remember that Hatchings are spammy. This is not the time to write novella-length poses. Also, if you're going to Impress, some Co member is going to be watching for your poses in particular. Help them out by including your character's name at the beginning of your pose.
    • Relax and have fun. This is the celebration at the end of your candidacy, the exciting time where you learn if you'll be getting a dragon or not! Enjoy it!
  • IC Attendance. No one ICly knows for sure when the hatching will start. It could be in the middle of the night, it could be early morning, it could be around lunchtime. Either way, when the Weyr walls begin to reverberate with thrumming dragons, this is your character's cue to get to the barracks and into that white robe. A Weyrlingmaster or a member of the Weyr leadership will take all the candidates out to the sands where they will all bow to the dragon parents and wait to see if one of their bundles of joy chooses your character as his or her lifemate.
    • If you are OOCly late to the hatching, please RP that your character was really shepherded there with the other candidates. It would be highly unIC for a candidate to join the sands late. If you're unsure of what to pose, please ask on [<+CatToys+>].
    • Don't pose bowing. Sometime prior to the Hatching, your candidate group will write a "group bow," and one member of your Candidate group will emit it for you. Your character will be shuffled into their place in a loose semi-circle surrounding the eggs.
    • Remember, this is chaos. It's okay if your character can't see, hear, and respond to everything.
  • IC Impression. If your character Impresses a dragon, they will have the stunning experience of another mind bonding with theirs. The newly bonded pair will be led off the sands by a Weyrlingmaster where bowls of raw meat are waiting to satisfy the dragonet's hunger. OOCly, you get to stay on the sands and watch the rest of the hatching to see how your fellow candidates do.
    • After the hatching, the new weyrling group will be taken to the weyrling barracks.
    • If you do not like your dragon’s name, and absolutely cannot live with it, don't announce his/her name and let your SearchCo leads know after the Hatching. When things have calmed down, we would love to work with you and your inspiration leads on finding a name that makes YOU happy! Ultimately, our goal is to make YOU happy! Of course, we do encourage you to spend some time thinking about it, but nothing with these dragons are set in stone.
