Lesson: Betweening Practice Part I.

Summary

This week, you will go between for the first time.

This is a big and scary milestone. Weyrlings can and do die in Between classes. You start individually with a weyrlingmaster, and your Betweening will be closely supervised for some time. NO unsupervised Betweening yet.

You'll gradually trade your ground drills for formations flown in the air. You'll also take your flaming into the air as you start rope drills in small well-spaced groups. This is something you'll practise with increasing intensity until the end of weyrlinghood. It really is the key to Threadfighting.

RP Suggestions

  • Dragon care, exercise, chores around the Weyr etc. as before.
  • Individual first Between lesson.
  • Go for a run with your mentor, or join their wing for PT.
  • Mini-drills and full drills.
  • Discuss the possibility that someone from your class might die in the next Between lesson with your clutchmates, your dragons, your mentor or other older riders. Get ready, because you between this week!
  • Rope drill in a trio or small group. How did you do?
  • Keep up that firestone tossing!
  • Responsibility: Bagging firestone prior to Fall, as before.

Milestones

  • First Between
  • First mock Thread flamed!

Restrictions

  • Uniform of green and black to be worn at all times.
  • Use caution if indulging in sexual activity and alcohol use.
  • No unsupervised Betweening.

WLM Guide

  • With weyrling wingleader and wingseconds, supervision of formation drills and the like will be shared. Any minor issues should be addressed by the wingleader/wingseconds - let them try and sort it out as part of their training. Of course, safety issues or things needing immediate attention should be mentioned. And don't be afraid to correct a wingleader/wingsecond during drills - we're all in this to learn together.
  • Chances are only the more experienced AWLMs will be leading the first betweening drills
  • Make sure the lessons are one-on-one. This is no time for getting lost in the group!
  • Before a dragon may try to go between, make sure they can take a location from your dragon's mind, and pass it back in a way that is satisfactory for a trip between
  • Feel free to quiz them on places they should already know by now (like above the northeastern bowl)
  • Start easy, go bigger. Maybe between from above the barracks to above the central bowl.
  • Once they can do the places they know, try the hold, and then other, farther coordinates
  • Only once they've proved themselves can weyrlings start going between as a group, and all betweening this week must be under AWLM supervision!
  • You could also try a small group rope drill.
